Umar (may Allâh be pleased with him) saw Ziyad bn Hufayr put on a pallium (a type of cloth worn specifically by the Christians and Jews) and allow his moustache grow heavy, he did not respond to his greeting until he removed the pallium and reduced the moustache. The incident was recorded by Abu Nuaym in Hilyatul-Auliyaa.

[Today, Muslims see no problem with a Muslim man who knowingly shaves his beard].

Ibn Umar (may Allâh be pleased with him) deserted a man whom he told should stop throwing pebbles around the place, having told him that the Messenger of Allâh (salAllâhu alahy wa sallam) prohibited the act. The man did not listen and Ibn Umar (may Allâh be pleased with him) said, ‘I will never talk to you again.’ Recorded by al-Haakim.

Ibn Mas’ood (may Allâh be pleased with him) saw a man laughing as a funeral passed by, he said, ‘I will not talk to you again.’ Al-Imâm Ahmad recorded it in Az-Zuhd.

Al-Qaadee Aboo Ya’laa (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) said, ‘The Companions and the Taabi’oon agreed as to severing ties from the people of Bid’ah.’ There is a similar statement from al-Imâm Al-Baghawee, al-Ghazalee and Ibn Abdil-Barr; they all say there is a consensus over that.

Ibn Umar (may Allâh be pleased with him) sent a message to the people denying predestination as thus, ‘I am free from you and you are free from me.’ Recorded by Muslim.

Al-Fudayl bn Iyaad (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) said, ‘Be wary of whoever sits with a person of Bid’ah; such will lack wisdom. I love that there is s fortress of steel between me and a person of Bid’ah. That I eat with a Jew or a Christian is more loving to me than I sit with a person of Bid’ah.’ See Shar’hus-Sunnah 130.

He (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) also said, ‘Whoever leads a person to an innovator has deceived Islam. Be wary of sitting with people of Bid’ah, they dissuade from the truth.’

Abdullah bn al-Mubarak (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) said, ‘Be wary of sitting with an innovator.’

Sufyaan Ath-Thauree (rahimahuLlaah) said, ‘Whoever listens to a person of Bid’ah has left the protection of Allâh. Such will be made to rely on it (i.e. that Bid’ah).’

Al-Imâm Al-Laalikaa’ee (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) brought a report from Aboo Zur’ah (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) that he said, ‘I did see Sabeegh bn Isr (the one beaten by Umar for asking unnecessary questions about the Qur’aan) in Basrah going about like a stray donkey. Anytime he came to a sitting of knowledge, the people there would stand and leave him. If he managed to sit where he was not known, those who knew him (from the other sitting) would call out: ‘See the one beaten by Ameerul-Mu’mineen.’’

Ibn Abee al-Jauzaa (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) said, ‘That I sit close to monkeys and pigs is more beloved to me than I sit close to any of them (i.e. people of innovations).’

Ibn Taawus (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) once covered his ears with his fingers when he heard a Mu’tazilee speaking.

Abdur-Razzaaq (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) forbade people to listen to Ibrâhîm bn Abee Yahya al-Mu’tazilee. He said, ‘The heart is weak and the Deen is not about who dominates (in argumentation).’

Younus bn Ubayd (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) used to say, ‘Do not sit with a ruler nor an innovator.’

Yahya bn Abee Katheer (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) said, ‘When you meet an innovator on a route, take another road.’

Ibrâhîm bn Maysarah (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) said, ‘Whoever honours an innovator has taken part in destroying Islam.’

Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) forsook Abdullah bn Umar As-Sar’khasee for a period of time because the latter ate with a person of Bid’ah.

Al-Hasan al-Basree (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) said, ‘Do not sit with people of desires nor argue with them nor listen to them.’

Aboo Qulaabah (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) said, ‘Do not sit with hem, do not mix with them. I cannot guarantee that they will not drag you into their misguidance and make many of what you have known about the Deen confusing to you.’

Al-Imaam Maalik (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) would not make Tasleem to the people of bid’ah. Ibn Daqeeq al-‘Eed (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) commented on that, ‘That was meant to teach them a lesson, and serve as his disavowal of them.’

Al-Khattaabee (may Allâh bestow mercy on him) said, ‘Forsaking people of desires and innovations will remain as long as they do not make their repentance and return to the truth apparent.’

on authority of Ashhab ibn Abdul azeez, he said: I heard (imam) Maalik saying: beware of bidah, it was said oh Aba Abdullaah and what is bidah? Ahl bidah are those who speaks about the names of Allaah, his attribute, his word, his knowledge and power and do not keep mute where the sahabas and taabi'oon kept mute.

How does one balance between being nice and good in hope for a change ( ie the people change)and being firm? When should a person decide to be firm or soft?

How does one balance between being nice and good in hope for a change ( ie the people change)and being firm? When should a person decide to be firm or soft?

The thing is, not everyone that engage in a bidah is tagged a mubtadi', some engage in it because they dont know its bidah or due to a misunderstanding.

The people we attack are those who call to this bidah even after it has been made clear to them that its bidah.

example,

(in a soft and gentle manner) brother this thing you are doing is bidah, so and so is the proof.

in reply the brother says; well there is no clear cut proof for what you say, moreover i met my shaykh doing this, he cant be wrong, many people are doing this, are you telling me there are all wrong? you wahhabi!! leave me, i will continue doing this.

so in this case he has been given clear cut proof even though he claims otherwise(as you know they never agree with your proof), then we boycott him(with whoever tries to protect him or get close to him) and become severe in refuting or warning against him.

a clear case here in NL is, you see we are soft to some and harsh to some.

soft to genuine ones and harsh to the stubborn ones, who seek to justify their bidah.

Using of Tesuba/Masbaha/Tasbih is bid'ah; let us shut the manhaj of "Awon Baba so pe"(The babas said) or that dusty manhaj of Qaala shaykh!!

Let us hold tight to the rope of Allaah and punch down together the heavy storm of shaytaan (bid'ah)!!

bidah is what made Christianity what it is today, very far from its pristine religion.

Ash-Shaykh Muhammad Nasir al-Deen al-Albani
said in Al-Silsilat al-Da’eefah (1/110), where he quotes the (weak) hadeeth “What a good
reminder is the subhah [masbahah]" “In my view, the meaning of this hadeeth is invalid for a number of reasons:

Firstly, the subhah [masbahah] is bid’ah and was not known at the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). It happened after that, so how could he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) have encouraged his Sahabah to do something that was unknown to them? The evidence for what I have said is the report narrated by Ibn Waddah in Al-Bid’ wa’l-Nahy ‘anha from al-Salt ibn Bahram, who said:

'ibn Mas’ood passed by a woman with a masbahah with which she was making tasbeeh, and he broke it and threw it aside, then he passed by a man who was making tasbeeh with pebbles, and he kicked him then said, “You think you are better than the Sahabah, but you are following unjustified bid’ah! You think you have more knowledge than the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)!”’ Its isnad (chain of transmission) is saheeh (authentic) to al-Salt, who is one of the trustworthy (thiqah) followers of the Tabi’een (Successors).

[if a Muslim did this today, he would be labelled a fanatic]

Secondly, it goes against the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him). ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘I saw the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) counting the tasbeeh on his right
hand.’”

He also said (1/117): “If there is only one bad thing about the masbahah, which is that it takes the place of the Sunnah of counting on the fingers, even though all are agreed that counting on the fingers is preferable, then that is bad enough. How rarely I see people counting their tasbeeh on their fingers!

Moreover, people have invented so many sophisticated ways of following this bid’ah, so you see the followers of one of the [Sufi] tareeqahs (orders) wearing the masbahah around their necks! Or some of them counting with the beads whilst talking or listening to you! Or another one – the like of whom I have not seen for some time – riding his bicycle through a street crowded with people, with the masbahah in one of his hands!

They are showing the people that they are not distracted from the remembrance of Allaah for even an instant, but in many cases this bid’ah is a cause of their neglecting what is obligatory (wajib). It has happened many times – to others as well as myself – that when I greet one of these people with salam, they answer only by waving and not by saying the words of the greeting. The bad results of this bid’ah are innumerable, and no one can say it better than the Imam Maalik who said:

‘All goodness is in following that which went before (the salaf),

All badness is in the innovations of those who
came later.’”

And Allaah knows best.

Kb has done justice to it really. But lemme add to it. One thing is, wen it comes to the worldly issues like wen someone does a bad thing to me, it is A thing I can simply overlook etc.

But wen it comes to the deen, I can be harsh regarding that..for instance, we see adults making noise in d masjid or just outside d masjid, I USLUBical tell dem straight up ni, 'ah daddy end disturb Wa or somtyn in a respectful manner. Sotey dem go shock say 'Alfa Rabeeu ti o gentle ko re ni...or Alfa Rabiu ti o man ba a won Omo kekere se awada re ni'.

Point is, let everyone know u as someone who is strict in d matter of d deen, not Jabata-esque strict o, synnaah strict. So wen u eventualky para, dey will understand say, aaaaah, Alfa tio kin se eyan bayen. Faulti Wa ni.

Allaahu musta'an.

@ Abu Sulaim

Jazakallahu Khyran. I know that one should be strict amd firm when it comes to the deen of Allah but I wasn't sure when a person is being too strict. Or when being strict isn't beneficial. Maybe its because I haven't been exposed to things like this. When I read a little about it today, I realized the strictiness I see on NL is only because bidah is a serious issue and it is justified. Once again Jazakallahu Khyran

May Allah safeguard us.
