If u are in Lagos, there's a sickle cell centre opposite Luth in Idi Araba. I suggest there mainly because of the emotional strength she will gain from knowing and seeing others suffering from same plight as her. Medically for now,the condition is managed symptomatically as d crisis arises, paying particular attention to pain relief, blood boost and treatment or prevention of likely infections and infestation of malaria parasite. The medical community too is handicapped on how much it can do for sufferers than relieving pain, which for some requires upgrade of pain killers because they sort of become non responsive to previously used ones as crisis returns. Emotional support is vital, from family, friends and caregivers. |

In addition to what the good doctor has said. To young people out there, sickle cell disease can be prevented by making sure all couples go and test their genotype before pregnancy happens, for every pregancy an AS woman carries for an AS man, has a 25%chance of having the disease, it means that every single child by the couple can have the disease, imagine if they now have 3 children all are SS, triple wahala. Another thread asked on when it is appropiate to ask for their partner's genotypes,my response is as early as possible, before you start to catch feelings for him/her. It is also not enough to ask, both of you go for testing becos someone may be lying. No child deserves to be born with sickle cell disease. I have lost many to it even relatives, i have seen friends and classmates become addicts to powerful painkillers (not paracetamol o, those very potent ones that are found only in the hospital) because of the disease. A few even tried to commit suicide because of the pains and/or drug withdrawal. Love cannot conquer sickle cell o. Love will fly out the window when you take a child to the hospital due to a crisis. The gist of this epistle is that AS and AS should not get married, good night. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Op you are not alone, just know that and calm down. I lost a sis to this terrible disease and my baby bro is a 'sickler' too but God has been faithful. Like others have said, the folic and B-complex are essential and should be use on a daily basis but most importantly is the regular use of malaria drug, and don't try to manage the crises on ur own, take her to hospital regularly. There are herbs that are use to prevent blood shortage, ensure she takes it regularly and have adequate rest, she shouldn't stress her self much. Above all, pray for her, our God is faithful. There are many who live with d disease and are doing fine, I even know a guy who works at the bank, imagine how strenuous banking jobs are but he is doing fine. Just ensure she eats good food and enough rest. God will keep and preserve her in Jesus name. 2 Likes |

Hello websurfer, so sorry for the pains your sister has had to go through.they are indeed warriors. A lot of people don't know this but there is a sickle-cell foundation directly opposite Luth at idi araba. There is a drug , you can Google it hydroxyl urea which reduces tremendously the amount of sickle cell in the blood which makes them sickly and she can take palodrine it is a malaria preventive drug , but please please don't self medicate so take her to the foundation, she will be attended to by doctors who are specialists they will run some tests and administer the right medications ,it is not expensive at all,and the drugs are more affordable if you get it there. If you have any question don't hesitate to ask. My email is Floxynap@yahoo.com God bless you for caring for your sis. Ps. Let her drink lots of water, stay in ventilated places and try not to eat late at night, very important. 3 Likes 1 Share |
