Yea they do, they are all sailors, mostly captains. The least earned $3000 a month working with shell petroleum then. But the glamour of coming to USA almost blinded them before I opened their eyes.

Now his wife have given birth to all his children here. And those kids always come here for medical checkups that cost tax payers a lot. Yet he pays nothing even though he's a rich boy.

That's the best way to take advantage of those who wishes to labor here.

Then this your (caliber of) friends are not whom this thread (OP) is counselling for.

The people in question here are the hand-to-mouth (though able bodied) folks, who would happily go through what you over there think is "hell" mainly because they are simply after "earning a living" while your (the diasporas) own ideology of a career is already obfuscated by the natural trappings of wealth, after living in the west for a while

An hungry man is asking you for a loaf of bread to sustain his soul and you went on ranting about the absence of cheese, jam, butter or coffee for him to gulp it down.

Does that makes sense

The guys wanting to migrate here aren't earning that much

Why would I want out if I'm earning that much

First of all there is nothing like Competition or you would be Competing with yourself. Nobody is Discouraging you from coming, rather people are Warning you about what to expect. 1. Things are not as Rosy as you might believe, the work ethics are different and you dont cut corners. 2. People were also shocked when they first came here and many said "Like say I no, I for no come" Millions have said this Countless times and that is what they repeat to those back home. But now that they have spent Money, Loans, Difficulties to make it here, they decided to tough it out and that's why they didnt return back, though few Returns back 3. There are some people that are just not meant to be here and cant face or cope with the Pressure of the WEST coupled with the Pressure they receive back from home and such takes their own lives.4. Once nobody says you should stay back and not come, they just want you to know what to expect. We did a Movie long ago about Life abroad. Go to Youtube and check "Under Pressure Holland" 5. Finally many people might have been able to Manage and Cope if they were Selfish and just looks after only themselves, but NO! a lot of Pressure is from people back home. You work and have to Share your money with Family and friends back home, while the people here work and use the money for themselves only. That's basically it. Bless

I think giving someone a positive direction is very okay. Going abroad is a prayer point in many churches in Nigeria so if you guide, you are an Angel grin. A lot of great dreams has been killed in this country. There are a lot of responsible Nigerians abroad so not everybody is a criminal. People migrate from many countries to the West, even progressing ones not to talk of a stagnant country like Nigeria. Nigerians are strong hearted and hard working people. Most white cannot survive what an average Nigerians face everyday. When my cousin,a nurse first travelled to the UK,she called to say that Nigeria is in hell mind you she was working here before she left. The quality of life in Nigeria is so low. Oppression and impunity is also very high;police, army, agbero, conductor, passenger, employer, politician etc. A country where police flogged a Prof in law in public. A place where SSS beat school teachers etc. Worst of it,the govt cares not about the people. We know it's not easy in developed world but it's tougher in undeveloped world.
We should not encourage anyone going abroad illegally but most people who do,has nothing more to live for. That explains why someone will travel to Europe by road, through the desert to Libya and enter a doomed boat. Until we fix Naija the painful exodus will continue. If anyone wan jand just show him the way and explain the implication shikina. Our economy is bad and Nigeria need the dollar.

Which company is he working for that gives him a chauffeur?! I'm not saying he is lying to you, but in developed countries, even the head of blue chip companies either drive themselves to work or they use trains/taxis. I'm guessing if a visa holder can be given a driver, then passport holders working for the same company will be given drivers as well. The company will be spending a lot on drivers for its staff; this is a practise that even Microsoft UK, Apple UK, Schlumberger etc don't even do. The best they do is give a car allowance for you to lease a vehicle, not hiring dedicated drivers for their employees. Infact, I'm keen to know the name of the company your brother works for, maybe I need to dust my CV and apply to work for them. grin

Bros, how can I migrate to UK ?

After 16 years in america i can testify that life here is truly a mirage.
Nothing really belong to you here . i mean nothing . Anything you have , you can loose it anytime .
You finish paying 30 years mortgage on a house. You owe some back property taxes .... That house is gone . r taken and sold by the municipality. Back home you build your house ... You can rest at peace. No mortgage . you pass it to your kids and grandkids.
Everything na debt ! Acordind to the statistic sef 75 % of american are one paycheck away from being homeless. Living day by day .

Time goes by so fast because you spend 2/3 of your life working just to pay bills .

And for girls trying to settle in america illegaly.... I pity you. Guys will promise you paper use you and sleep with you left and right . i have seen it many times.

As for me , i am planning my return . 3 months here 3 month back home. Save and build my business empire .
I am a citizen. if things dont work i can always come back.
I dont even mess with girls here ( i am 34 am i hope its not late to settle down with a local chick at home . when ready )... Because by the time one get pregnant for you here in america , you are caught up in the system. You will never leave.
My only concern now is my student loans .

Am not replying because of u but for others who will read this.

U have no advantage over me on experience both outside and inside Nigeria.

I left naija wen I was 24, and have been coming back to naija twice a year. I see wats on ground.

To be able to heal, u need to first admit u are ill.

You are very arogant and harsh.my immediate younger brother who work at a good place in nigeria wanted to bankroll my expenses to dubai and also get me work there when i was 31.

but i turn it down because i believe some ideas and passion i can make it in Nigeria.

instead of being this rude tell people one or two things to do to get there. As for me start a sound business with the money to gp abroad is better.

why go to a place and be second class citizen and be suffering.

Majority of companies simply have an account with cab firms. And use the cab services when their services are required..........

sadOp that's not true. You just don't understand. I will never encourage someone above 25 to come to Germany. I mean forget it, you just WON'T cope and will have to settle for less. The language is the big deal here. People think it's very easy to learn a language, they don't even plan and most think Europe/America is a place where the streets are made of gold. Sometimes you have to be EXTREMELY patient, sometimes you will be forced to give up on your dreams etc.

The truth is the younger the better. You don't want to come here and do some jobs you don't want to, just because you can't speak the language and therefore have no other choice

This is only applicable to people without any type of skill or career, in the past few months a lot of Software Engineers have been recruited from Lagos to Berlin and none of what you've said has been a problem. Change is not easy, it has its challenges but please don't make it sound like an impossible task.

unless the housemaid is stupid because if she is not stupid she will run away after a year. why will she be a housemaid to you in canada ? when she can go to school and better her own life ? see when you go abroad you need to leave this archaic ways of thinking behind. all that slavery you do in nigeria is not allowed in the west because that is what having personal driver and house maid is. its slavery. you tie another human beings life and destiny down for your own personal purpose. why ? if you need maid go to agency and they will give you maid who charges you by the hour. if you want car driver call chauffeur company and they will hire you driver who you will pay by the hour. thats how they do it in the west

I won't completely doubt his story.

A former colleague moved to a Swiss private bank (in a developed country) as a senior VP and as part of his employment package, he got a fully furnished apartment and a brand new SUV (but without a personal driver).

I won't be surprised if a more senior staff member had the same perks but with a personal driver.

This is getting annoying , how come each time a person is asking for directions on how to travel abroad most pple in diaspora will be discouraging the person.

If it's dat terrible why are u still there?

You enjoy the benefits of living in an organised society, knowing fully well that naija is a difficult place to live.

Are u scared of the competition the new immigrants will bring?

Nigerians in diaspora , what exactly are u afraid off??

I am amazed at the number of Nigerians bidding time in Agadez end route to Libya, and then cross the Mediterranean with high odds of loosing your life.

Why, why Essentially all hope is lost. Aspiration has been murdered and dreams have been destroyed.

Empathy requires that you understand, appreciate and even feel the circumstance of others.

I discourage people coming into the UK I tell them the reality of leading an undocumented life without legal immigration status. Now it may seem ludicrous and irrational to me.

But when I empathise I discover, what I call undue stress is minor inconvenience, what I call denigration is small humiliation, what I call uncertainty is certainty to them and what I call pain may seem like comfort.

What we should be doing is giving people as much information to make the best choices available to them. To enable them avoid as many pitfalls as possible.

In the current situation where for so many hope is lost. We will continue to see people play lottery with thier lives on the most perilous journeys to leave Nigeria. So let's give them as much information as possible to make that journey without losing thier life and soul.
