Daniel Okafor stood in view with his basketball shorts and a sleeveless polo shirt , a pair of thick rubber slippers stylishly designing his feet.
He was not whom I expected to see. Where was the investigator? Something had gone wrong .

" It has been almost an hour now " I said in regret then continued " Dani ,please ,remind me of the reason why I am still here?

" Just exercise patience " said Dani when he found a soft spot on a cushion . " It's not too long now. She should be here soon"

she? What stupid joke was that? That case was starting to look like a child's play to him , it was obvious he thought I was kidding about it and hired a female without my knowledge. She would only make things worse by tapping into her emotional side- that was the least of my options at that point of action.

" I'm out of here . The suspense is killing me " I said after another twenty minutes of waiting.

Izzy eyed Kechi, then she focused on Dani. The three had something up their sleeves . I would be lucky if I knew about it.

I stood up and made for the door hoping someone wouldn't bother to stop me . Guess I was wrong as Izzy called out in distress.

" Wait ! " she said " We have come this far . Let us hear Dani out. I am optimistic that something positive will come out of it all "


" Izzy don't tell me you actually think me to be stupid . I know it's not a private investigator that we are here for ; definitely not one, but don't also think I'll seat here waiting for one -one -malnourished therapist. Who can't even level down her own problems but poke into other people's life. Yes . I am not stupid and you guys picked the wrong girl on whom to play that trick "

" Where will you go ?


" Nowhere. when you are done here " I said calmly " come right home. Don't Keep us waiting as you alwa-"

The front door flung open and a male impending figure cut me short of words. He stood right in front of me. I couldn't get myself to breathe any longer as disbelief closed every faucet in my lungs. His sudden appearance there beat my wildest imaginations.

He was rather surprised as we both uttered each other's name simultaneously.

" Efua/ Nosa "

How did you .. What are you - you doing here? said Nosa .

Silence paralysed my vocal chords at my own will. My blood vessels boiled at mercury melting point.

"Dani Cash" Nosa said casually " This is not the business proposal you called me for . Is it?

Dani admitted by shaking his head sideways.
" definitely not" Nosakhare confirmed.

" I'm a bit sorry about that " Said Dani. He got to his feet and hugged Nosa. He returned to take his initial position on the cushion.

I watched as Izzy and Kechi stared in a bewildered state of mind .

Izzy hissed " Daniel , where is the therapist? Are we still expecting more surprises ?

" Which therapist ? Nosa said as he came for my arm. All the while he had been standing " I've been searching for you ,for four days now, Efua . You left without a single word or trace to your whereabouts. I was worried "

His palms glazed my skin but I snapped. After a clenched fury , my fist's impact on his left cheek marked it red like a failing heart.


Surprise stared him face to face in the eye . Undeterred , he came forward again but as he tried to touch me I let lose the canyon..

" Don't even dare "

" Let's talk outside Dani. " Izzy cleared her throat " You too. Kechi , you are coming. Outside please ".

" We are staying. It's just a blackmail and misunderstanding case right?" Dani said again " right?

" Yea" Izzy replied reluctantly.

Nosa asked to know which blackmail case they talked about. He thought I probably told them something more than obvious on the surface.


" Atleast tell me what you told them " He questioned .


" Does it matter now? You Know the whole story, can you stop pretending?


" I'm not . I don't - ' Nosa uttered probably through impulse " I don't pretend "


Daniel wiped his fingers together " So . this is even simpler than I thought. Well , down to business. Bros, you no do am shey? " his mixture of English and Pidgin showed his connections to the streets.

" Do what?


" Do it na . Blackmail and depose Efua . Please let's settle this amicably."

I had wished these words escaped my mouth. *Just answer the damn question for heaven's sake . why prolong my suffering ?*


Nosa became the centre of attraction as we crossed fingers and legs watching him take the stage like a dumb puppet . However , he finally opened up.

" I have no idea what happened that night , . I'm innocent "

I threw a couch pillow at him . I had grasped it in my arms when we anticipated his reply. " You are such a cheap liar . Liar. I hate you "

For a while I couldn't understand why my emotions had an off and on effect . It was pure adrenaline and electrical charge of nanobots running down my spine.

Nosa rubbed his cheeks re-living the pain my slap caused .
He tossed the pillow into a corner .

He begged Daniel for privacy to talk to me . " just five minutes " he said.

" No problem " said Dani as he shrugged.

" I'm not staying even two seconds with only you in this living room . Not in this lifetime . " I barked " You re such a monster who deserves nothing but a pit hole for the rest of his life. "


I trusted you * I loved you naturally and easily *


I wished the last part had come out of my mouth but Nosa would take it as a sign of weakness on my part.

He couldn't bear the heat anymore as he came forward to me. He grasped my arms but I would prefer a cruxcifiction than to allow him hold me easily. I snapped and darted my attention to a wall on the opposite direction.


" Efua... " he began again " I know this is not why I came here . But thank God for that other purpose which brought me here"

He stammered.

" i- - - I --- You -- can't, --you can't start to believe me. In fact , I deserve all these maltreatments , I specially deserve each of them. I was rude and hostile to you in the past . But I don't deserve being accused of something I did not do.

I questioned his judgement and the blank stare on Izzy and Kechi's face seconded my wish to know the truth.

Nosa gave me a very trustworthy reply and swore with his life that he was being sincere and truthful with every word.


*What should I believe at that point. Was it Uyi who raped me afterall ?*

" Why tell me all this now? I asked him, still unsure of what to absorb as truth .

" Because I had done crazy things in the past ,I had led a life of ugliness. I swam in sin but I realised something important when you entered my life "

" And what is that?

" I realised it is all vanity upon vanity . That your gentleness and pure heart was enough to change my life "

I nodded.

" And yet. You still went ahead to ..."

He cut in . "- No. Never. I won't ever commit such wickedness to someone I fall in love with. I love you Efua .Yes i do " he continued to my unquenchable fire of surprise " I do and I mean it"

Tbc on Friday, if it will not be possible, I sure will announce it before time. Thank you for sticking around this thread

Nosakhare's words made my knee buckle and I replayed it a hundred times in my mind. If he so much as cared for me like he said, why was my gut telling me otherwise ?

My former boss -Mr Ake came into my mind as his first instructions of being watchful of Nosa , flashed into my face.

*" one of them says he is a prince. I'm a realist. people can say any rubbush . it's doesn't bother me. "*

Nosa grabbed my arms and I reluctantly let him hold on . He stared into my eyes, only if he knew what was going on in my head. His knees went down to the tiles.

He said " Yes .. I know it's hard for you to take in but I mean it . Efua . I do . I was only skeptical that you would react strangely . That is why I tried to make you hate religious life . It was a hindrance to my advances. " He paused " But now I'm sorry n-"

My palms found their way out of his grip and retired on his cheeks twice, before they layed to rest by waist. After a third resounding slap,obviously.

" Get up " I stretched out my arms to enable him get support . " It's okay . I believe you. Enough stories "

" Okay. That was so romantic and painful all the same" Kechi uttered from behind me " I'm glad the tension is over "

I wished that was true , it was far from it. Nosa hid something from me that I desperately needed to grasp.

I dropped my handbag on the couch nearby and watched as Nosa brushed dirt off his trousers, probably humiliated from my serial slap attacks.

" How did you know about my birthday ? I asked after he became calm.

*" I guess this is far from a blackmail case " Daniel interrupted "well I'm glad I could still help out here "

" Yes " Kechi cut in immediately " You are one in a million. That's why you're my role model "

The both smiled cheerfully to each other .
Izzy 's face became sad and regretful. She kept quiet and I wondered what had happend between her and Dani that erased life from her eyes.


Nosa grabbed my arms and turned me around " Stay with me " he said " deep down I'm emotional. I --"

" You haven't answered my question " I cut in.

He explained how Uyi had informed him about everything. Nosa also explained what had led to that discussion and how Uyi convinced him to throw me a party.

" I never told him anything . Are you sure that's what he said?

" I'm certain " Nosa said with surprise slapping him an umpteenth time " That's why I --"

The front door flung open again .It was as if everyone that walked in, knew the tension level in the room and had to increase it. Our eyes captured the intruder. * Rita . What the heck was she doing here in Benin.? How did she find that place in Osasogie?The surprises that Izzy had earlier mentioned were all adding up.


"Bros. " Dani said" How come your babe follow you show na ? I thought you said you were in Benin alone?

Nosa denied having any idea of what was happening .


" What are you doing here . Rita ? You left your work at Umuahia just to follow me around like a puppy . what do you want? said Nosa.

Rita 's cheeks brightened with smiles . She came in without invitation; she circled me then wrapped her arms round Nosa 's neck .

He pushed her back .

" Did I crash this little party of yours " She said to me " Haha! I'm sorry. I couldn't let this one pass me by after missing your birthday. "

" What do you know about me?



" Everything and anything, Efua . Enough to know you are a pretender and a cheap boyfriend snatcher " She chuckles " Oh . Mother Mary now wears trousers? Good " She returned her gaze to my face " Improved tactics?

"What do you want here?



Jealousy could not loose sight of her object and love could not stay far behind either. Rita brushed a finger slightly on Nosa's cheek.
Daniel ordered her to leave. His tone scared even me like Nosa's previous attitude had done in the past.

Izzy begged him to let Rita stay.






" Yes . Let's hear her story" Kechi supported.

" I couldn't let my boo slip off my arms easily .He's mine even till the ends of the earth." said Rita with audacity hidden under a smile.

Izzy hissed as if the situation was personal to her . She grabbed her bag almost immediately and made for the door. Kechi and I followed her new found strength.

Dani begged us to stay. " Give me a minute to resolve this.."


" Don't worry" I said " You have done more than enough" . I noticed as Nosa tried to say something but the words choked him. '" Thank you ." I said to Dani but my eyes still gazed upon Nosa .



Rita opened her mouth wide and burst into laughter. " The pretender walks away , again , hopelessly. Awwwnn,she's so gullible yet."

I released my grip on the front door's handle and matched towards her. My body parts were programed for one mission and my knuckle did the dirty work as I rammed my fist into her preety -makeup disfigured face . Her nose suffered and she screamed in pain.

Nosa moved away from her while she scrambled on the floor. I also left her with a mountainous joy in my heart.

* I've aways wanted to do that * the thought was self rewarding.

" You'll pay dearly Efua " Rita cried from her position on the floor. " My nose ..anrhhh. Aye mi ! ahhanhhh Olosho you broke my nose ."

" I have done that already" I replied when I slammed Dani's door behind me." That's how an Olosho behaves , abi you don't know?
