So interesting but have got a question.

Is Jane cousin against her bringing her child over to her home? if yes I guess there is a reason.

Nice story

Nice story

She can't bring her child along because she may be distracted from her duties to her cousin's family and if she starts school, it will be difficult coping with him.

CHAPTER FIVE continued

11 p.m was the latest time she slept and this was mostly on Saturdays and Sundays when there was much work to do. There was variety of food in the house to cook and Rahila seldom gave her orders on what to prepare for lunch and dinner. She decided to make a timetable for meals and paste it in her own room. That way, she didn’t need to crack her brain on what to cook.

After she had spent four weeks in the house, she began to enjoy herself. She had adjusted perfectly to the rudiments of life under the Okafors. Work to her was not strenuous but a habit she could not do without. She took her chores as something fundamental to her existence. Being slack or negligent was not part of her personality. Her mother had built up this characteristic in her. As the only child, people had expected her mother would spoil her, but Caro was not a woman to spoil a child. She raised Jane up with a mindset to make a hard working woman out of her; she did not hesitate to beat or scold Jane when she did an offence. It was from her that Jane picked up the habit of beating a child crazy.

She only left the house to go to the local market, close by shops or supermarkets. On Sundays she followed Lancelot and his wife to the Mountain on Fire church or occasionally, the hospital chapel. Days passed and time moved glacially in small chunks. She let hard work and motivation to go to University be her driving force that propelled her to please her benefactors. Every day was a day to shine and give her best.

Her day was spent cooking, cleaning, polishing, attending to the laundry, reading a novel, doing more cooking, watching soap opera’s on Telemundo shortly before Lancelot came back from work, tidying up the dirty dishes, mopping, writing a diary entry and closing her eyes to sleep. The routine became her essence; her lifeblood. Each passing day she got something new to be fascinated about, something interesting to share in her diary. Her entries were mostly about what she observed between Rahila and Lancelot; she sometimes noticed they communicated with facial expressions and wondered when they had mastered the art and if she might be able to replicate it. At other times, Lancelot would almost bite his fingers while eating and end up thanking his wife for the delicious meal, Jane would wonder why he never made an attempt to commend her on the cooking, knowing well enough that Rahila could not cook. But it made no difference to her who got the commendation, the fact that her efforts in the house were making a difference gladdened her.

Rahila for one showed genuine gratitude for the help she was offering, when a visitor came over to the house, she would introduce Jane saying “my cousin who helps me put the house in order”, the visitor would then look, expecting to see a poorly dressed girl with a battered self esteem and will see instead a beautiful lady smartly dressed, looking like a newly designed doll.

“Jane makes the best moi moi in Gwags,” Rahila will sometimes tell the visitors who cared to stay for meals. “And her zobo drink is worth dying for,” she will add.

Over the weeks, Lancelot’s snobbish behaviour towards her gave way to a passive attitude. He would acknowledge her greetings with a brief nod and a grunt and say thank you when she served him his food. Apart from that, he stayed in his room when he was back or went to the garden to sit all by himself when his wife was not yet back. Jane, afraid that Lancelot saw her as a distraction did her best to also conceal herself from getting his attention.

CHAPTER FIVE continued

One day, her menstrual cramps hit off. It was in the morning after she had finished preparing breakfast. Rahila had already left for work but Lancelot was at home in his room keeping to himself as usual. Normally, her menses came without much pains and she could still go about her normal duties, but that particular day the cramps were so bad that she had to leave the dishes half way and retire to her room. It must be all this sugar I have been taking in this house, she thought. She made a mental note to cut down her sugar intake. Slowly, she made her way to her room one step at a time, holding her aching stomach in her hands as if she were a pregnant lady due for delivery. The pains were so terrible she felt she would fall any minute.

In her room, she carefully searched for her sanitary pad and undressed, taking great care to put it in place. She hated the menstrual cycle. It always made her feel vulnerable. The sight of the blood alone would weaken her and make her feel completely hopeless. She wore a yellow gown after dumping the other dress she had pulled. Even though the dress was not stained, she would not put it on again till it was washed.

The bed felt cold when she laid down. Her mind went to all her undone work; the unwashed plates, the clothes she had to put in the washing machine and the shopping she needed to do at the local market. Rahila might be angry if she did not do them, but the pains she was going through were too much for her to forfeit. Her stomach contracted once again and she groaned, this time around with tears in her eyes.
Lancelot had stopped hearing the gargling of the tap in the kitchen, all seemed quiet. He knew from instincts that something had gone wrong. His instincts always turned out correct. He got up from his reading table and walked out of the room. He was wearing only a white vest with a black plain trouser, he forgot to wear his belt. He peeped in the kitchen but there was no sign of Jane there. He called her twice but there was no response. He did not want to go into her room to check but there seemed no other alternative. He walked briskly to her room and knocked.

“Come in.” Jane called.

He hesitated, if there was nothing wrong with her he did not need to go into her room. But her voice had sounded heavy, as if she was in pains. He opened the door cautiously and entered. Jane was curled up on the bed like a cat, her eyes were watery and her face was contorted.

“Are you okay? You look sick.” He said.

“I have a stomach ache.” She replied not wanting to disclose her real ailment.

Lancelot looked closely at her. “Are you on your period?”

Jane could not hide it any longer, he was a doctor and sooner or later he would deduce the truth. “Yes I am.” She said and looked away as quickly as possible.

He grunted and walked away. Minutes later he came back to the room producing some tablets and capsules. “Drink this.” He said, “Your cousin keeps them for her own menstrual cramps, it will make the pains subside in no time.”

Jane accepted them with thanks, she left the room and went to kitchen to get a glass of water and swallowed the drugs. She turned to go back, Lancelot was at her back looking intently at her, his face wore a frown and he was cracking his knuckle absentmindedly.

“You need to rest for some time, I will help you do the dishes so your work will not pile.”

“Sir? No Sir, that won’t be necessary, if I rest for some minutes I will come and finish the dishes and do other things.”

“You need to rest for hours not minutes, besides, washing dishes are not new to me; before you came I had been washing dishes together with my wifey. Just go and sleep now.”

Jane looked at him amazed, what sort of man was this? She thanked him and slowly left the kitchen while he went over to the sink and began washing. Jane slept for two hours straight, she woke up at 1 p.m. She got up from the bed nearly in a hurry and would have knocked herself over. In the kitchen, the plates were already cleared and the tiles and looked like they had been mopped. She went back to her room where the dirty clothes had been kept for washing but did not see a single clothe there. Lancelot had already put them in the washing machine and they were drying outside in the sun.

Her cramps had subsided greatly, she was thankful to Lancelot. She picked up the money Rahila gave her for the shopping and locked the door. Lancelot was no longer at home so she assumed he had reported at work. Her shopping only took her 30 minutes; she bought some beef, seasoning cubes, fresh pumpkin leaves and water leaves and some stock fish. She came back home and started doing the cooking before Rahila came back home.

CHAPTER FIVE continued

One week after the incident, Jane was drying out the clothes in the backyard while Lancelot was making calls in his room. Suddenly he felt bored and decided to look for something to amuse himself. He trudged to the living room and sat down to access the DSTV since the little L.G television in his room was not connected to the satellite. He put on Zee World, a popular soap opera was going on but he could not bring himself to watch it. He put on Discovery Channel but soon got bored of the dinosaur the scientists were analyzing. A thought came into his mind, he thought it was crazy and tried to wave it aside but the thought persisted. He got up and made for Jane’s room.

He entered and looked around; soon he found what he was looking for. He took the brown hard covered book he had seen the last time he was in her room and flipped it open. Jane Dung’s Diary, it read. He flipped pages and read excerpts of the things she wrote, he knew this was unethical and wrong, but something kept compelling him to continue. He came to the excerpt she wrote on the 2nd September 2013.

2nd September 2013

Hi Diary, time is flying really fast. Remember by this time last year I was in Jos with my aunt and son. They are doing very fine by the way, Aunt Gloria tells me she will be taking Isaac to Play Class next week. Yes, that’s right. Isaac will be staring school. Since his birthday fell on August 13th, he became 3 years. The dude is old enough. It is only a shame that I would not be there to witness his first day of school. I sent my aunt three thousand naira out of the money Lancelot gave me for my allowance. I told my aunt to use it to buy a fine lunch box and water bottle for Isaac’s schooling.

Thank God for the allowance Lancelot gives me every month. I thought there will be nothing like that for me since they take care of my feeding, clothing and miscellaneous expenses, but to my surprise, Lancelot said he will give me 10 thousand naira every month. Is that not great?

Planang has not yet visited me, but we talk on phone. We are both on Facebook, but you know, I hardly have time to chat on Facebook and I am trying my best to avoid all those aprokos from my secondary school who want to show off they are doing better than anyone else.
Haruna has been bombarding my phone with calls in the night, these days I simply switch my phone off to avoid him. I do not even know what his problem is. I asked my cousin, Rahila, to explain our relationship and she told me he was adopted by my aunt who is a second cousin to my late father. So technically, we are not related by blood. No wonder he has the effrontery to tell me he has feelings for me. You know what I did? I just locked up!

I need space. I do not need any boyfriend now. My main aim is simply to get admission into the university and graduate successfully. I have already started warming up for my JAMB, since my cousin and her husband are medical personnel, they have a lot of books on science and biology, I have been going through them.

I planned on asking Lancelot for help, since he is a doctor he might be able to advise me on the right course to study. But he seems always sombre and in a grave mood. To think I had been head over heels about his physical appearance, anyway, he seems like a good husband though; he talks about his wife all the time and praises her beauty 24/7. I’m still in love with his physique (not him), and I could give anything just to have a husband with his exact structure. I got to go to bed now. See you tomorrow.

Lancelot closed the diary and chuckled. He kept the diary back in its place and left the room. Jane is a crazy girl, he thought. Crazy people are always interesting individuals
