CHAPTER SIX
The last glass item had been cleaned and put in its place. Jane stopped and admired her work before smiling with satisfaction. She had finished cleaning and polishing the furniture and house fixtures, and there was still much time left for her. All her other chores had been done, she was only left with the cooking and that will begin by 1 p.m. It was 10 a.m now; she pondered on what activity she could engage in that will occupy her till cooking time. She could read the Biology textbook her cousin gave her yesterday or she could snuggle on the couch and watch Zee World channel. She decided on the latter, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, she thought.

She flipped the channels with the remote as she stood standing opposite the decoder. There was a soap opera already going on, she stood gazing at the T.V trying to decide if it would turn out interesting or not. She felt a hand on her shoulder, because she was not expecting anyone to be in the house by that time she jumped in fear dropping the remote. She turned to see a puzzled looking Lancelot wearing a critical face.

“I’m sorry Brother, I was scared.” She apologized.

“Never mind,” he said waving his hand “What are you doing?” He pointed at the T.V.

“I wanted to watch a drama series on Zee World.” She replied.

“Oh, this? This will only pollute your mind; before you know it you will start thinking of crazy things.” He said frankly.

She gave him a quizzical glance.

“Watch CNN, Aljazeera, CCTV or better still you can watch CBN or Daystar. It’s just a suggestion though, you can watch any channel as long as they don’t show indecent images. I’m going to work, I guess you forgot I was still home?”

“Yes Sir, I thought you left with Sister.”

“Well don’t worry, in a matter of seconds you can have the house all to yourself. Peace.” He took his briefcase and went out of the house. Jane watched from the window as he got into his car and drove out of the gate. She got out to close the gate and returned to the house.
This was the first time he was blurting out instructions to her. In the past he left the running of the house, giving of orders and advising to his wife. He did not bother about what Jane did, watched or said. This man is strange, she said to herself.

For lunch she made pounded yam with egusi soup and chicken stew. She ate hers by 3 p.m and kept Rahila and Lancelot’s own in a hot food flask. Rahila was not to come home till 6 p.m but Lancelot, whose place of work was just a 5 minutes drive to their home, came by 3:30 p.m claiming he was so hungry he could eat an elephant. Jane looked at him thoroughly before setting the table for him. He hardly came home for lunch and when he did, he always spoke to her through his nose to give him his food, he never used any figurative language. When he saw the food, he pounced on it and ate everything on the plate, including all the chicken that was served.

“Thank you Jane.” He said. “Now I must rest before I return.”

“I thought you are supposed to be on duty today?” Jane asked.

“I am not on duty till evening, but I got an emergency call, one of my patients was having an issue breathing.”

“How is he now?” Jane asked candidly.

“I lost him.” Lancelot replied.

Jane looked at him properly; fear and a mixture of wonder filled her mind. How could he lose a patient and be this gay? Was it because he had gotten so used to losing people that he lost the emotion attached to it, or because he had no emotion in him?

“I’m sorry about that Sir.” It was all Jane could say, she quickly cleared up the dishes and took them to the kitchen to wash. She hoped that as she washed the plates, Lancelot will leave the dining room; she did not want to come back and find him still there, she did not want to look him in the face and see the inward pain he was hiding, the agony of the dead child that he was secretly trying to release from his mind. She felt all of a sudden sorry for him; how many deaths did he have to witness? How many families did he have to comfort? How many children did he have to fall in love with and lose to sicknesses?

She spent longer than she normally would in rinsing the plates. At last she was through, she turned her head to face the dining room and Lancelot was no longer there. She heaved a sigh of relief. Perhaps he was in his room or the garden, questioning his maker. She took calculated steps to her room; she wanted to just stretch on the bed and let her mind wander into oblivion. She threw the door open, Lancelot was in her room, his eyes were scrutinizing her cupboard. She felt fear leaping at her. This man is going crazy for sure, and I am all alone in the house. She thought. Her mouth fell open, she tried to speak but her throat was all of a sudden dried up.

He turned to look at her. “I have a confession to make Jane, you will not like it.”

Oh God, he will say he wants have sex with me and if I refuse, something drastic will happen. Her mind told her.

“I have been reading your diary and I must confess I am addicted to it, forgive me.”

Jane’s eyes stared wide. “You have been reading my diary Sir, oh come on, that is prying on my privacy. Who does that in this present age?” She asked looking into his eyes, she was doing her best to control her rising anger. How could he?

He shrugged his shoulders. “I deserve to be punished, go on and name your punishment, just don’t report it to my wifey, please.”

She shook her head. “I cannot punish you Sir, and I am sorry for shouting at you. I guess you meant no harm.”

“Sure. I meant no harm, but it was very immature of me. I will make it out to you I promise.”

Jane shook her head again. “I don’t want promises Sir.”

“I am not Pamshak Jane, I am Doctor Lancelot, I will make it up to you, thanks for understanding.” He said and exited the room.

Jane turned to watch him go. This just keeps getting better and better. She thought.

CHAPTER SIX continued

Lancelot did not say anything to her concerning the diary after that day, 3 days passed and he behaved coolly as usual, pretending as if he did not notice her presence in the house. He ate his food and thanked his wife for the delicious meal as he normally did and answered her greetings with a nod and a grunt. Many things ran through Jane’s brain this whole while, she came up with a theory; that Lancelot was depressed and was gradually losing his mind while she, Jane, was the only one who noticed it. Rahila did not notice it, as a matter of fact, her work seemed to occupy all her time and left her with no other time to think about her home. When Jane tried to engage her in petty talks, she would yawn, stretch and complain about how tired she was. Sometimes, she told Jane in almost hushed tones about her patients; the old woman who had dementia and called her “Daughter”, the young boy of 15 who cried when he was given an injection and the poor woman with a baby whose husband had abandoned her for days.

She always spoke of these patients as if it was the most unethical thing a nurse could do, as if any minute she would be caught and fired for simply telling another soul about them. When she talked about them like this, Jane would listen attentively without interrupting. It was the one time they bonded, Jane valued this somewhat sacred moment they shared. Occasionally, Rahila would ask her few questions about herself, like if she called her aunt often or whether her relationship with her mother was still strong since her mistake with Pamshak. After this she would chirp out some instructions for Jane:

“Make sure you bolt the kitchen door before going to bed. Don’t forget to change the water for the pap, since you prepared it for yourself take care so it does not turn sour.”

She would then say good night and turn to go to her room. Lancelot will come out of the room immediately to lock the door of the sitting room, then he will reduce the volume of the T.V because he knew Jane will still make use of it, he will then walk back to his room silently without saying a word to Jane.

After Lancelot’s confession, Jane had to find a better place to hide her diary, though she doubted Lancelot will come to look for it. But then if her theory was right and he was losing it, he might come back to look for the diary, after all he had said he was addicted to reading it. She frowned when she remembered he now knew most things about her that she would never have told him.

He needs help, she figured out. But who was she to tell her cousin that her loving husband, the pride of her life, needed psychiatric evaluation? Her cousin will only tell her to pack her things and leave, that Jane was the one who needed to visit the psychiatrist and not her husband. The best thing to do will be to pray it would not get blown out of proportion so it could still be managed.

On the fourth day, after the confession, Jane was sewing a button back on her blouse in the sitting room. She wore a black vest and a blue cotton skirt with folds on it. She heard a car pull up in the garage, she checked the time and it was 2 O’clock. It was not yet time for Rahila to come back so she knew it would be Lancelot. She went to her room and changed to a flowery blouse. He entered the sitting room and she went to welcome him and collect the things he was holding.

“Welcome Brother,” she said to him.

“Thank you Jane, how are you?” He said smiling brightly.

“I am fine,” she said with a worried expression. When he smiled at her, it meant she was in for a big surprise.

“Guess what?” He asked and collected the things he brought from her hands. He did not allow her to answer; he opened one of the bags and removed a long pink dinner dress. “This is for you.”

“Wow,” Jane said taken aback. The dress was pretty and was looking elegant. She held it and admired it. She loved it at the instant, but she was afraid to collect it because she did not know what he had at the back of his mind.

“The surprise I told you about...” He ventured when she looked at him inquiringly. He opened another package and brought out black high heeled cover shoes. “Try it on, in fact, go try everything on in your room and come back so I can see how they fit.”

She took the bags and went to her room, two minutes later she came out looking like a bride. He was sitting on the long armchair when she came out, his eyes grew wide when he saw her. He stared at her for long.

“You look splendid Jane. You look like Cinderella going for her first ball.”

Jane smiled. She could not hide her happiness. “Thank you so much Brother, it is so beautiful, and they are all my size. How did you know my size?”

He waved a hand to mean she did not need to bother.

She smiled. His eyes were still fastened on the gown that she started to feel clumsy. “Thanks.” She said again, “I will show Sister when she comes back.”

“Right.” He took his eyes off her, “Oh, I also got you these.” He removed a wrapper and handed it to her. It was a chocolate bar, she had been desiring to eat one for a long time now. She accepted it with a curtsy.

“Lunch is ready Sir, would you like to eat now?” She asked him.

He thought about it for a while, “Should I? What do you think?”

She laughed throwing her head back, a deep cackle that echoed in the living room. “Maybe you should, it is past two O’ clock now.”

“What’s for lunch?” he retorted.

“Yam porridge with lots of fish and vegetables.”

“Okay.” He rose up and came to the dining table. He asked for orange juice and after he had drunk the juice, he ate the yam porridge slowly.
After the meal, he rose up and carried the dishes himself to the kitchen. “Thank you for the delicious meal.” He said to Jane who acknowledged him with a smile. She watched as he left the house and went back to the hospital. She knew from that moment that things were going to be different in that house.

CHAPTER SIX continued
The conference hall of Louisa Hotels and Towers was grand; it was decorated with gold and silver embroidery. The chairs were all covered with white fabrics and yellow ribbons tied at the middle. Lancelot was dressed in a green blazer with a white polo shirt and green plain trousers. He held Rahila with his right hand and his left hand was on Jane’s shoulder. Jane was wearing her pink gown while Rahila was in a gold armless gown. They had just arrived the venue for the National Science Awards. Lancelot was nominee for one of the awards. He had insisted Jane come along even though the ceremony was to last till 11 p.m. Three of them walked gaily into the hall like a set of triplets.

An usher walked up to them and when she saw Lancelot’s nomination letter, she conducted them to special seats in the front. Rahila blinked excessively, the bright lights that sparkled were affecting her sight. Bright lights affected her eyesight; she rummaged her bag till she found her gold rimmed spectacles that would protect her from the illumination. There were five seats around the table they sat, on the table was two bottles of champagne and five wine glasses for each seat. There was also a bouquet of yellow artificial flowers on the table.

Lancelot turned to whisper something into Jane’s ears and she giggled softly. It was her first time in an event like this and she did not want to do anything that will make her seem odd. Rahila smiled as she saw both of them giggling. Both of them had suddenly become fond of each other. She was worried when Jane first arrived that Lancelot did not like her. Now it seemed the both of them were related. They joked and laughed at the slightest thing. Rahila could not be bothered with their closeness; she was sure she still occupied first position in Lancelot’s heart, besides; she could bet a hundred dollars that her husband will never cheat on her, especially not with Jane.

“If I win the best paediatrician of the year, I want you two to stand up and clap your hands very loudly, like they do in the movies.” He said to both of them.

“I don’t know about how they do it in the movies.” Rahila replied.

“Have no fear, Jane is here. She is the movie pro so she will guide you on how to do it properly.” Lancelot said and they all giggled.

Someone slapped Lancelot casually on the back. “Doctor.”

They all turned, two men were staring at them.

“Hey, Joe and Bayo, you two made it. Thanks a lot.” Lancelot got up to hug them.

Rahila stood up and shook hands with them. “Thanks for coming, please join us. This is my cousin Jane.”

Jane stood up to greet. Joe quickly got hold of her hand and kissed the back of it. Bayo shook her and said: “Happy to make you an acquaintance.”

“My pleasure.” Jane retorted.

Joe got the seat near Jane and balanced his weight on it. He was chubby just like Lancelot was, with the same height, weight and carriage.
“Doctor brags about having two beauty queens in his house. Now I know he is not lying. I just came back from Texas three days ago and when Doc told me about this event, I said i had to be here.” Joe quipped.

“Of course, as my besty, you deserve to be.” Lancelot said.

Jane looked flustered. It was obvious Joe was trying to get her attention but she did not know why. She thought about excusing herself to go to the ladies, but she was worried that it was too early for that. Joe was talking now about his trip from Texas and he was looking straight into her eyes. She avoided looking at him and concentrated on the ushers in blue and white uniform who were hurrying to and fro.

CHAPTER SIX continued

The main event kicked off, there were many dignitaries present; the First Lady of the country, the minister of health, the minister of Science and technology, several foreign scientists and university vice chancellors. After the dignitaries and nominees were welcomed, a cultural dance troupe came up the stage to perform and after that a popular comedian mounted the stage to lighten the mood. His jokes were mainly about doctors and the state of infrastructure in the country. The audience laughed hard, even Jane could not stop herself from laughing till tears dripped. Only Lancelot did not find the jokes funny; he kept a serious face throughout the comedy; Jane stopped laughing when she turned to look at him.

During one of the speeches by a notable person, Rahila took a picture of Jane sitting immaculately. The speeches were long and uninteresting. It took up half of the time. It was finally time for the awards; the award title was announced and the winner was called, a short biography of the winner was read and he or she was given a trophy. The host called out the Best Paediatrician of the Year category:

“The winner of this award goes to Doctor Lancelot Okafor Okoronkwo.”

Applause followed the announcement, as Lancelot stood to go to the podium, Rahila, Jane, Joe and Bayo stood up clapping. A few others also stood up.

“Lancelot Okafor Okoronkwo is a doctor in the Central Hospital Gwagwalada, he has contributed immensely to child care in the country including introducing several methods in looking after children with Sickle Cell anaemia. His book, Inside the Paediatrics Ward, published in 2009, has been very instrumental in hospital practice especially in dealing with child related cases. He studied Medicine in the University of Benin and did an internship at Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos.”

The camera flicked and the lights flashed, the minister of health presented the trophy to Lancelot who bowed slightly and flashed a smile revealing a handsome set of white teeth. Other health practitioners and scientists were also presented with awards. The rest of the time music played and cameras flashed as the guests ate and drank. Lancelot and his family left immediately it was 11 p.m while Bayo and Joe remained to enjoy the event till the end.

Weeks passed and Lancelot and Jane became best friends at home. Jane felt important and special; it seemed her presence in the house made it really a home. She was entangled in a home where the couple enjoyed marital bliss and understanding. Since there was no child in the house, she was given the status of a child. Rahila and Lancelot took turns to buy her things on their way home from work. Lancelot got her JAMB past questions booklet and mentored her concerning her future career. Rahila told her stories of what happened in the hospital wards and gave her relationship advice even though she did not need any. Both of them were friendly but Lancelot behaved like an elder brother towards her, he even had a name for her, “My Girl,” he would call her and reserved “Wifey,” or “Sweetheart,” for Rahila.

Jane soon debunked the theory she had made up about Lancelot needing psychiatric help, though at times she noticed that Lancelot acted odd at times like leaving a little tea in his mug and insisting Jane drinks it in his presence or answering her greetings with a nod if she saw him before 5 a.m in the sitting room. At those times when she saw him at early hours in the sitting room, he would be sitting quiet on the long armchair facing the kitchen or watching a program on Daystar.

When he was not on call on Saturdays, he took her to one of the parks in Abuja where they sat talking about herself or they bought fruit juice and sat sipping it. Lancelot called it exposure and sometimes Rahila came along. On those days when Rahila came along, Jane was almost neglected and the couple talked about their friends. When Jane insisted, they went to amusement parks and Jane had her fun riding on fun rides while Lancelot took pictures of her. She was having the best moment of her life. At times she thought about Isaac and knew he was missing her, but she consoled herself with the thought that she would go to see him by December; she had saved some amount of money to do shopping for him and buy him lots of toys.

On the 21st of November 2013, Planang visited Jane. She wore a brown blouse on a blue jean trouser. Her hair was packed with a blue ribbon and her lips had been smeared with black eye pencil. She smelt of men’s perfume and when she saw Jane at the gate she kissed her cheeks leaving the outline of the black eye pencil on jane who did not notice.

“Babe, you are fat now, what have you been eating? You look beautiful though, I’m so happy to see you.” Planang yelped.

“I’m happy to see you too, you have not changed one bit. Still the same height and weight. Welcome to our house.” Jane opened the door so she could enter. Planang surveyed the sitting room and happily sank into the couch. “Girl, you dey enjoy abi?” She said looking mischievously at Jane.

“I dey enjoy now, wetin you think say I come Abuja do?” Jane retorted. She went to the refridgerator and brought out Hollandia Yoghurt, she found a tray and glass in the kitchen and laid the pack of yoghurt on the tray, this she brought and set it on a side stool before Planang.
The two girls chatted quickly in Hausa, they did not even notice Lancelot coming out of his room till he stood close to Planang. They stopped talking and Planang immediately got up and curtsied.

“Good afternoon Sir.”

“Afternoon dear, how are you?”

“Fine Sir.”

“My Girl,” he called to Jane, “Will you not introduce me to your friend?”

“Her name is Planang, we were classmates at Noble Academy in Jos. She is studying Accounting in UniAbuja.”

“Nice to meet you, Planang.” Then to Jane he said, “I want to meet someone a few miles from our house, I will be back soon okay?”

Jane frowned, “When will you be back?”

“Soon I said, what should I get for you?”

“Suya and masa will be fine.”

“Right, take care of your friend.” He waved at Planang and left.

When he was outside Planang gave Jane a questioning look.

“What?” Jane asked.

“Is that how your oga behaves towards you?”

“He is not my oga, he is my cousin-in law and yes, that is how he behaves towards me.” Jane said with her eyes facing the T.V.

Planang clapped her hands and nodded, “Babe you are so lucky, he is so friendly and so handsome, he looks like the kind of man I will like to take away.”

Jane turned to look at Planang, her face was in a tight grimace. “Take away to where? My cousin’s husband remember...”

CHAPTER SIX continued

“Give me a break Jane, it was only a joke. But he is really cute, it seems both of you are...” Planang crossed her fingers to demonstrate what she meant.

“Absolutely not! Oh come on Girlfriend, be zai taba ye faru ba, it can never happen.”

“He called you My Girl,” Planang said and looked upon Jane suspiciously.

Jane shook her head vigorously. Planang could be one hell of a character, just what was she insinuating? She decided to change the topic. They talked about their high school and about university life. Planang was planning to come out for Financial Secretary in the upcoming Students Union elections, she was positive she would win. Nobody, she claimed, was as popular and competent for the post as she was. She told Jane about the GSTs, the TDBs (all night reading), the strict lecturers who gave impromptu tests and the broke boys with sagging trousers that she had to turn away each day.

“Sounds interesting.” Jane quipped.

“University is interesting, I can’t believe you would be writing JAMB next year; I wish you will be admitted before I graduate but that is impossible now. Microbiology? I thought you told me on phone that it was Medicine you would study?”

“I came to understand Medicine is much too complicated for me; I want to do something I can handle.”

“You can handle anything Babe, trust me. Besides, Mr Handsome Cousin-in-law can help you out when you are stuck, why else would he be calling you My Girl if he cannot offer you help?”

“Enough of him Planang. I will be studying Microbiology, end of story.”

Planang pouted. She drank a little of her yoghurt and looked around the house. “It seems your cousin-in law loves art; look at all this art collection. I wish I could interpret all this abstract drawings and painting.” She stood up and walked to the bookshelf and opened the glass casing. “My my, Joyce Meyer, T.D Jakes, Myles Munroe... Jane it seems Handsome Doc is a religious man. You won’t be bored in this house at all.” She closed the shelf and wandered back to her chair. Jane’s eyes were deliberately fixed on the T.V.

Planang came to Rahila and Lancelot’s wedding picture above the television, “Now this is the kind of wedding gown I would wear on my own wedding day.” She kept on moving from one object to the other admiring them and making remarks. When it was 7 O’clock she announced that she would be leaving.

Jane walked her out to the gate and watched her climb a bike. Planang kissed Jane’s cheek one more time before the bike zoomed off. Jane watched, sometimes Planang was a completely pain in the neck and other times she was an angel. She walked back to the house and shut the door. Her cousin was on night shift and will not be coming back to the house that night, at other times, she would have felt lonely, but since Lancelot and herself were now pals, both of them would stay awake till 12 a.m talking and laughing. In the kitchen she rinsed the glass cup her friend drank yoghurt in, she let the water run on the glass cup for long; it soon brought back memories to her.

Pamshak was inside their one room apartment cuddling Isaac to fall asleep. It was evening and the children in the neighbourhood were bidding each other goodbyes and entering their homes, the mothers were packing their dried clothes while the fathers were listening to evening news on radio. Jane was outside the house washing the plates they had ate dinner with. She was scrubbing the glass cup that Pamshak alone used to drink water with. Her mind was on how she was going to treat herself of the malaria that was now taking a toll on her body. She had complained to Pamshak about it but he told her she was finding an excuse not to work, nothing was wrong with her. Mama Audu had advised her to wash dogonyaro leaves and drink every day, but she was scared; she was still breastfeeding and thought the herbs had a side effect for infants. The glass cup was slippery in her hands and her head was throbbing as if rocks were being broken inside. The glass fell down on the veranda making a loud sound; the pieces scattered all over the wide cemented floor and lay there like grains of corn. Jane stood erect and still, shocked at the sight of the fragments.

Pamshak opened the door and gave a long peek at the ground, he said nothing and closed the door. By now, Jane’s head was aching terribly but she managed to sweep the ground clean and throw the broken pieces in the dustbin. She rinsed the rest of the plates in a hurry and entered the room hoping to rest her head. As soon as she came in, Jane received a hot slap from Pamshak.

“Idiot!” He barked at her, “I have been using that glass cup since my days in my father’s house, it never broke. Because of your careless attitude, you have damaged it. Break all the glasses and ceramics in this house, kin ji ko? Wawia ba irin ta.

Jane tried explaining the reason the glass cup slipped from her hands but she found herself crying uncontrollably. Pamshak hissed and left the room in disgust leaving Isaac on the bed who looked quietly at her and wondered what was happening.

Jane wiped her tears now, she put the glass cup on the shelf after wiping it. Lancelot was in the living room calling to her. She came out to meet him.

“I got the suya and masa.” He said. He took another look at her and got afraid. “What is it Jane?”

“Just my thoughts, nothing else. I am okay.” She said with a sob.

He looked tenderly at her. He drew near and held her with his right arm, taking great care not to put his weight on her body. “You can tell me anything?”

Jane sniffed. Why was it that everything about Lancelot reminded her of Pamshak? They were so divergent and yet they seemed similar. She sat down on the chair and Lancelot followed her cue. They were quiet for some minutes as Jane thought of what she was going to tell him. She could not afford to reveal her fears and thoughts to Lancelot, it did not seem like a good thing to do. She wanted their friendship to be casual and not intimate. He was a man, knowing too much about her may give him the guarantee to take advantage of her in future. He seemed trustworthy, but he was still a man.

“I just keep feeling bad that I am a single mom.” She told him in a gentle voice.

He clasped his hands together as if he wanted to pray. He started to tell her about some prominent women he knew that were single mothers. “Being a single mom does not mean anything. It is not like you have an STD or have Sickle cell. As a matter of fact it just shows you are a strong lady, you could have aborted the unborn child and could have been free, but you chose to have the child and bear the stigma. You can be anything you want to be in life. Don’t let that discourage you. You are wonderfully and fearfully created by God. He loves you just the way you are, with all your faults and mistakes and past. He wants you to have a glorious future in Him. You can start by forgetting about your past and focusing on the present and future.”

“But how can I forget? It is so difficult to forget the past.” Jane sobbed the more.

“I know.” He looked at her, “Especially when there is a reminder...”

She turned to look at him and discovered his eyes were now watery. He got up quickly. “I’ll be back.” He said and walked hurriedly to his room. Jane sat for some minutes and when he was not back she opened the polythene bag, took one masa and started munching it. He came back some minutes later and the tears in his eyes were gone.

They ate the suya and masa and watched a show on Nickleodeon. When it was 10 O’clock Jane dozed off. Lancelot called her name twice and when she did not answer, he stood up carried her in his hands and took her to her room. He laid her on the bed and covered her with a comforter. “Good night, My Girl.” He called and left. She was still asleep. He went back to the living room, put off the T.V and sat upright on the long armchair staring at nothing in particular and thinking his own thoughts.
