THE IGBO ENTREPRENEUR IN THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OFNIGERIA
Olanrewaju Akinpelu OLUTAYO
Department of Sociology, Faculty of the Social SciencesUniversity of Ibadan
ABSTRACTCentral to the capitalist orientation introduced to the Third World nationsthrough colonialism is the role of entrepreneurs in development. This group is still perceivedas inevitable if these nations are to develop. In spite of all the attempts to develop date, verylittle is being achieved. While this monograph recognises the importance of entrepreneurs in development, itasserts that these entrepreneurs have always existed in pre-colonial Nigeria but the re-orien-tation brought about through capitalism has fundamentally affected the pre-colonial situation. As such, there is a disjuncture between the latter and the present capitalist expectation.More importantly, the author tries to debunk the position of certain European writers thatcertain ethnic groups are better entrepreneurs than others. Thus, the responsiveness of theIgbo ethnic group of Nigeria to European economic incentives was a result of a certain his-torico-sciological position that this group occupies in Nigeria. It is posited that as the nationapproaches the twenty-

rst-century, one cannot say with certainty that ethnicity should be themain consideration for entrepreneurial ability. It is the political economy of each nationwithin the World Capitalist System that will determine the emergent scenario.

What's jealousy got to do with facts?

Apple did not disclose what was paid, it was all rumor and internet fabrication.

If you have official apple confirmation or where apple asserted that 1 billion was paid, show us or move on with your fake story.

afonjadie:

Afonja stop the merry in foolery, this thread is only going slow because of a thread that condemned Igbo's showcasing their companies and manufacturers so many Igbo's myself included have decided not to post any pictures here, even the OP is also reluctant to do so after being called out by every Igbo poster on this thread.

Cleary more Igbo's companies and products were posted on the Afonja thread than this one that goes to show you that the Igbo's don't support this thread, I personally have 10's of pictures that I posted on the Afonja thread which I have refuse to post here and I am sure I am not alone that should tell you something Afonja.

There is a saying in Igbo that says; Onye'm kariri a dim a si chukwu nyere'm aka. Another says; Onye'm kari a kari go'm ya. So comparing Igbo with Afonja is a smack on Igbo's face by any Igbo who does so, that is why this thread have been ignored, Igbo's know their competitors when the see them, in Nigeria they are South Africans, Indians, Lebanese, Chinese not Afonjas.

Tomorrow Afonjas will say Igbo's are not united but see how one thread made Igbo's act in Unison. Igbo's daalu nu rinne.

simple and apt!!!..
We av to discourage all this needless publicity of our folks' businesses....We are proud of their achievements and they are worth celebrating but discreetly...
Our focus should be on commending the quality of our products, giving feedback to the public and stuffs like dat, so that others can go try them out too....We know wah we av and are also aware of our competitors... Using the Nigerian circle for comparison is rather embarrassing, it's a recipe for stagnancy.

Meet two sisters Eastchurch sisters both score top GCSE grades from Highsted school in Sittingbourne

An Eastchurch girl has achieved a star-studded set of GCSE results – almost matching her sister’s top grades three years ago.

Chindi Ota, of Leet Close, found out she achieved 13 A*s and two As when she picked up her exam marks from Highsted Grammar School, Sittingbourne, last Thursday.

The 16-year-old got the highest grade in English language, English literature, maths, statistics, French, history, biology, chemistry, physics, RE and an ICT qualification worth three GCSEs. The two As were in sociology and German.

Chidera and Chindi Ota

She is due to start at the King’s School, Canterbury, on Tuesday to study physics, biology, chemistry, maths and further maths A-levels.

After that the star pupil would like to go to university at King’s College London with the aim of forging a career in cosmetic dentistry.

In 2010, her sister Chidera, who is studying medicine at Cambridge, managed to get 15 A*s in the same exams, but both insist there is no sibling rivalry.

Chindi said: “Obviously I was aiming to do as well as her, or even better, but we have different aspirations as to what we want to be in the future.”

The sisters’ Nigerian-born parents both work in the medical field. Dad Uchenna is a Sheppey GP and mum Mercy is a nurse.
