SKG-Pharma Ltd started business in Nigeria in the year 1962, as LePetit Ltd. This company became Wellcome Le Petit Ltd and transformed to Wellcome Nig Ltd when it became a full subsidiary of Wellcome Plc, UK. The company Wellcome Nig. Ltd became established as one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria with a fully equipped factory that manufactured many of the Wellcome brands.


In 1994, the Rumon Organisation UK,
bought the majority shareholding of Wellcome UK. This gave rise to SKG-Pharma Ltd, which continued to manufacture the Wellcome brands in Nigeria under licence and represent Wellcome UK for the non locally manufactured brands on an agency basis until the year 2000. Following the take over of Wellcome by Glaxo, the relationship that SKG-Pharma had with Wellcome UK was affected as GlaxoWellcome’s operation in Nigeria naturally took up the former Wellcome brands.

Bukky George is the Founder and CEO of HealthPlus Nigeria and CasaBella International. However, there are some interesting facts about this lady that will interest many as well.
She is referred to as the Queen of Retail in Nigeria based on the steady success of her pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies, Healthplus and CasaBella respectively
She graduated from the University of Lagos with five Best Student awards
Bukky who began her professional career with May and Baker before switching over to Smithkline Beecham, founded HealthPlus Pharmacy in 1999 and it has grown to have over 30 branches nationwide. The registered pharmacist with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria.
How did the idea for HealthPlus occur to you and in what way did you make it a reality?
I reflected on my academic background in pharmacy, my various skills and my personal abilities. I realised that retail pharmacy would be ideal for me. First thing was to secure a locationand the rest is history.
What do you do to make sure you pick the proper location for HealthPlus?
When it comes to retail business, location is everything. It is all about convenience and retailing is really about making shopping convenient for people. You must therefore site your location where there is guaranteed ‘footfall’ (number of people entering a shop(s)). You can get footfall in residential estates, high streets, shopping malls, and airports; these are some of the areas we have located our stores.
I can tell you that when we started, I didn’t have the perfect formula but I did a lot of reading to learn more about retail management. Location is one of the necessities. Something has to attract people to a certain location. This is the purpose of anchor tenants (such as a cinema and grocery store) especially in shopping malls.
