The Taraba House of Assembly on Wednesday passed the Anti-Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Bill 2017.

The passage of the bill came a day after the Assembly adopted the report of the public hearing on the bill which was conducted across the three senatorial zones of the state.

At the plenary presided by the speaker, Abel Diah, the bill was read for the third time after a motion by the Majority Leader, Joseph Kunini and seconded by Pius Sabo of Wukari 1 constituency.

After clause by clause consideration of the bill, the legislators unanimously voted for its passage through voice vote.

In his remarks, the speaker thanked the members for the attention given to the bill.

He advised the executive arm to give a minimum of six months grace to enlighten the public on the provisions of the bill before the commencement of enforcement as contained in the bill.

Governor Darius Ishaku sent the bill to the Assembly on May 17, for consideration.

The bill now awaits the governor’s assent.

Yeah its easier to whine and moan than take steps at state level. If Kogi and Kwara pass legislation South has a wall. The south has to stop wailing and pass legislation though unless they like open grazing.

Okowa stressed that the frequent clashes between nomadic herders and local community farmers was a complex national one that requires national resolution.

These fulani guys are everywhere.
The herdsmen in other civilised societies hardly have issues. The ones in UK, France... they ar nt animalistic in nature.

SO BAD!

This leaves me with two conclusions:
1) Religion is a problem here. A certain religion preaches war.
2) Illiteracy is a factor as to be uncivilised is d same thing as to be barbaric.

Way to go. Nice one from my Jukun friends. You don't attack people whether in your land or theirs and get a pat in the back like the FG is doing. Using words like Libyan, Senegalese and Malian Herdsmen to explain the madness is appalling and shows incompetency, lack of empathy and support.

This is a powerful response to FNG's inactivity and silence over the Fulani herdsmen menace.

The devil is in the enforcement. Nigerian leaders most often lack the political will to implement the law. Onitsha is reported to be one of the dirtiest cities on earth - but Anambra has sanitation laws which are not enforced. The anti- open grazing laws are just political gimmicks by dubious governors to divert attention from their corruption. As okowa rightly said farmers/ herdsmen clashes is a national issue and must be resolved nationally - a most sensible suggestion. In nigeria we play the ostrich until things get out of hand.

This is what ALL the North Central and Southern states in Nigeria need to do. Instead we would be having in-fighting among ourselves in the South and North Central.

Federal Government and the Nigerian Senate/House of Reps are NOT willing to do anything!

How can you say because their ancestors moved cattle about it means they are entitled to trample on farmlands? Where is the logic in that? Are we still in the 1820s?

If they cannot rear their cattle profitably in their domain, the need to find another occupation.

By the time open grazing is banned everywhere but the core northern states, the herdsmen would be forced to try ranching.
