I can't stand the goody two shoes messianic figures that Jon and Dany seem to be, with literally everything going for them because inexplicably people keep helping them.

Only 2 characters I can countenance as Overlords of Westeros are Cersei and Arya, because unlike all the other contenders on the board, these ones are actually doing stuff and making moves...not having everything fortuitously fall into place for them by lot magic

Well it actually follows. Few characters have spoken of him and only fewer are currently old enough to remember him clearly.

Viserys said Rhaegar loved violence and was an amazing fighter but Viserys was just about 2 years so how could he remember clearly.

Robert killed Rhaegar so he won't say anything nice about him.

Ned never spoke ill of the dragon prince even in the books. Me thinks if someone raped sister, I'd curse him out if I had the chance.

I'm going to go as far as saying, Rhaegar probably married Lyanna at Harrenhal before they eloped to Dorne because a prince wouldn't leave his best swordsmen to protect an ordinary northern girl and his bastard. Except of course she were his wife carrying a legitimate heir

Have you been following GOT subtleties at all? Just to recap. Most of loyal Stannis' soldiers perished at the Blackwater. Majority of the forces he went up north with are sellswords (bought after Ser Davos got that loan from the Iron Bank of Braavos). You've been saying his men deserted him which is not 'totally' true. The sellsword part of his force deserted him (surprised? not really. That what sellswords do). To further illustrate the point. Go and watch the scene of the fight between Stannis and Ramsey again, you'd see clearly he had more than a thousand men in that fight (which happened after the desertion).

So yes. I still believe a war strategist like Stannis (reputed to be one of the finest commanders in Westeros) wouldn't have left Dragonstone unammned.

He didn't not say Ill about him, he just had his doubts about whether he was all evil with no redeeming qualities as Robert painted him, this is the same Ned who while in the dungeon in kingslanding was busy humanizing cersei lannister the architect of his woes rationalizing that she did what she had to do as a mother and wouldn't really fault her! Simply put, it was in neds nature to see some good in people, the only person who spoke about him from a knowledgeable position was ser barristen selmy, and we both know what his opinion was worth in this case.
