At last it was morning, after running for our dear lives because we were caught unawares.

Their plan was to massacre the whole village. They nearly succeded albeit a great deal survived but a greater number never made it.

Gong! Gong! Gong! Came the sound from the town hall, it was time to take emergency measures

"...we can't wait for a second attack from these wicked sect, to act up do we?" charged the youth chairman.

"No!" we roared

"It is time to take the laws into our hands, for the durability of the laws in the hands of the government has cost us the life of our loved ones. It is time i tell you. It is time to take an eye for an eye, it is time to avenge the death of our loved ones.
I Beliandi Shatanga Owango declare war on them" he said with tears.

"yesssss!" we roared again.

The night before this morning, Comrade Beliandi's wife, two sons and a daughter were slaughtered. How he escaped was a mere stroke of luck.

Today we are going all out for the blood of the herdsmen.
Today if i die i pray to rejoin my slaughtered family.

THE SURVIVOURS

Aminat rested her back on the concrete wall of the shattered house, ruminating on the life she expected and the reality she's experiencing. Her mind wandered to her friends and mates at Government Girls' School, Chibok. It was about 10 o'clock p.m, they just finished prep. Mary, Laila and herself were lying bellywise, gisting about Abdul; Mary's crush. Suddenly, a confused noise ensued, dogs barking, goats bleating, people crying, fire burning, engines screeching and all. Mary! Mary!! Mary!!! was the last voice of Laila before a hot bullet pierced her intelligent brain. Mary didn't cry, she didn't move she just sat there, rigidly.

Laila can not die, she can't. At that moment, Shekau, the Commander-in- Chief of Boko Haram came in and decleared, "From today, you are all my slaves and wives of my lieutenants. You may choose to die or be my slave. The choice is yours". Aishat sobs, Laial, kai Laila. But they couldn't actually choose, they had all been hauled into the military truck and heading to unknown land.
After many months, Mary became brainwashed and joined the terror group in carrying out attacks round the country. Other students developed Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome. They preferred Sambisa Forest to their erstwhile homes.

Aishat was forcefully married to Jalailu. She was molested sexually and abused by Jalailu. She became pregnant, gave birth but felt nothing for the child, nothing for the world.

One day, just by stroke of luck, there was an air-strike, Jalailu was killed with his child of circumstance. And Aishat rescued. But she had lost everything, her hope, aspirations friends, family and life.

From these reveries, she soliloquized, "When the hope to live is lost, heart goes on beating." Looking at people caged in the Internally Displaced Camp, she said, "We are not living, we are just surviving; we are the survivour"

For the sins of my parents

"Madam has arrived, If I hear you say anything I'll kill you!" Oga shoves me roughly as he buckles his belt. I run out adjusting my gown and manage to enter the kitchen before madam. "Welcome ma"
"Idiot! hurry up and wash the fish then put it on fire!"
I already turn my cheek, expecting the slap. Madam isn't one to talk without leaving an exclamation mark on my face. I rush to the zinc as my face stings.

My name is Mosurat and I know you feel bad for me but don't. When I'm done and you see this on front page you'll hate me.

You see, I have a box of rat poison in the cupboard and I'm going to use it as an extra spice while preparing dinner.

My freedom was stolen when I was 8 and brought here by my poor parents with the promise of quality education. Instead I've been abused and raped everyday for six years.
Now I'm 14 and I plan to run away.
But they have to pay first.

I guess in every sense my innocence was taken from me.

I shake the thoughts and dish the melon soup into the bowl. It smells delicious and I add extra fish and poison.

They like eating together and this is their last supper. I start to smile as they begin to eat but my smile falters as I hear the words that taunt me to this very hour: "honey guess what? I'm pregnant"

THE PROCESSION
They stood there staring at her lifeless body; they were short of words – even actions. Their struggle seemed to be over but they didn’t look relieved, at last it has happened, their worst nightmare of not being able to talk to her, care for her, love her, feed her has become a reality, Iyeye as they call her has finally lost the battle with series of illness over the past three years. Shina checked the time, it was exactly 8:00pm in the night, and then he asked the rhetorical question, what do I do? Esther broke down in tears which she couldn’t hold back any longer. “Take Iseoluwa and go to ojo’s place, as for me I must go and inform her kinsmen at once”, said Shina as he tucked her body in as if she only fell asleep. He was shivering and when he pulled the cover cloth over her face, tears rolled down his checks, he wiped it immediately as he didn’t want Esther to see him cry. He was unaware the she had left the room until he finally turned around and couldn’t find her; he then slowly sat down on the floor and sobbed. He took out his phone to call his senior brother – Ademola, he had difficulty dialing the number with his hand that was shaking, after multiple trials he succeeded. “Hello”, the response hit him like a bullet and for the first time ever he didn’t greet but only said, “Iyeye ti ku Sir”. This increased his sob that he couldn’t say anything further. “Hmm —- Shina! Shina its okay, go to Ioso and inform her kinsmen”, replied Ademola. He hung up abruptly for he needed to sob too. Ten minutes on, he was at Chief Onibalusi’s house (head of his mother’s family and also the Ioso kingdom) His knock was very gentle, the door slowly moved away from him revealing the Chief who putting on a confused look, “Shina what are you doing outside by this time?” “Baba Iyeye ti ku” was his reply. The chief remained motionless and speechless for roughly ten minutes before he breathed out heavily, “now go and inform Ojo, Ibukun, Asede and Dada while I head to oke ibukun” he said. He retired back to his room to pick his agbada, while Shina started east in compliance to his instruction. They all arrived beside her corpse one after the other and by ten thirty pm they were all there. Onibalusi began, “as you all know, she is a high Chief and must be buried at once; this means we must carry her corpse to Iwara where Koso will cleanse her soul so that she can start her journey to the world beyond. Remember; while we do this nobody must see us” “Shina there is no time to find your brothers you have to carry her alone, we have no choice” Ojo informed. Shina bore her lifeless body on his shoulder as if she were alive. Then they began the 3 kilometers journey to the shrine. They moved at a fast pace without saying anything to each other or even themselves, they had torch with them but mustn’t put it on so as not to attract people. They had to find their way through the darkness engulfed the earth. They journey had lasted two hours, Shina was already panting and even his pace got slow and he lagged behind. Onibalusi who led them noticed this, and that was the only time any of them spoke, “we are almost there” was the vote of confidence to Shina and that actually worked the magic of boosting his strength and perhaps, courage which began to show in the increase his pace gained. While crossing Tainjo stream Shina almost felled but was saved by Ojo. “Welcome” Koso greeted in a low tone as he motioned to Shina to drop the corpse on a piece of whole cloth he had spread on the ground. They all sat down wearily to watch the priest carryout the atonement. He squeezed a leave until it produced water which he rubbed on her face, then killed cockerel and let the blood drop on her fore- head. He chanted incantations, sang a song which he also danced to. Finally he said, “O di abo mama” He then wrapped her with another white cloth, turning to them he said, “You are lucky, she conquered all her enemies before she died” this meant they won’t be attacked on their way to odi. “Now, who is to help her carry the sacrifice? The priest asked, silence dominated the shrine for some time until Ojo said, “O ya” “Eshe Oga Ojo” Shina thanked him immediately as they all rose, the big calabash filled out and red oil sprinkled all over bean-cakes was place on Ojo’s head. “Remember never to look back, no stopping and once you get to any crossroad drop the calabash there” Chief Onibalusi took a digger lying on the floor and also a shovel but Asede took it from him. This time Ojo led them, followed by Chief Asede, Ibukun, Dada and lastly Shina. The second phase of their journey then began. While crossing the Tainjo River again Shina did not fall this time for he has became more careful, his thoughts became fixed on his brother-Ademola, he imagined how bad he would be felling; his love for Iyeye knows no bounds. Shina remembered how Ademola has suffered for the past there years in the bid to save her life, he even sold his car to afford the surgical operation she had last year. He gave all he had and was ready to give more; he knew her death wouldn’t mean relief to Ademola. He couldn’t also help wondering about the other ones who neglected Iyeye during the illness, the two senior sisters who accused her of witchcraft, the first son who resides at Akure said that he as an evangelist cannot associate with his evil mother. Dare his immediate senior brother is a drunkard, he remembered he never came home that night; perhaps he has fallen asleep by the roadside as usual. He thought of all that have happened over the past three years, the quarrels, the blasphemy and even fights. Love flew out of their home. But would love be back now that she is dead? He wondered and wished; because he really wanted it back. He has missed the care he used to enjoy from his elder brothers and sisters as the baby of the house; but Iyeye’s illness had divided them. Now they stopped at the crossroad, Ojo dropped the sacrifice and the journey continued, he started feeling pains in his legs and right shoulder, his pace got slow and this slowed down the journey. He noticed the pity his colleagues had for him but they cannot help him. After an hour more they got to the graveyard at odi, Shina looked up and marveled at the numerous heaps of sand. They found a spot and commenced digging; they took turns with the handling of digger and shovel. The exercise lasted for almost two hours. It was a six feet deep, three feet wide and three feet long grave, also; in the process of digging they carved a chair in the grave as she would be buried sitting down. “Okay, that’s enough” Said Onibalusi. At that point Shina was asked to only stand and watch them when they gently put her down, chief Onibalusi sang a melancholy song at that moment, he continued singing as the grave was being covered up; and then, he finally broke down in tears. This gave Shina goose pimples, and then tears began to roll down his checks. He remembered the love she had for her children-including those that turned their backs on her at the face of death. She sacrificed all for their sake, like she has just done. Asede shouted in their native tongue, “The sun has in risen in the absence of Iyeye Kuku!” Onibalusi was still sobbing, none of them tried to console him for perhaps they knew the importance of sobbing in unburdening the heart of grieve.

WHAT IS ELUSIVENESS?

I almost met her at my school park on a random, sunny day. My roommate, Muaz and I were striding nonchalantly towards the nearest korope when I caught sight of a girl walking a step behind us, to our right. She wore plain, white tees on a pair of body-fitting blue jeans. She looked a bit stressed and what minimal make-up she'd used when the day was yet young had mostly worn off

Yet.

Yet, she walked with an effortless grace. Yet, her beauty was calm, assured and undeniable. Her features were impeccably arranged on her chocolatey face.

I was enchanted. I'd come up with a thousand ways to tell her how I felt. How I'd hold the doors open for her. How I'd listen and truly listen to every single syllable that proceeded from her lips. How I'd shield her from the world. How I'd discover, with her, the happiness and fulfiment that defeats time and our mortality.
I summoned the courage to walk up to her and let her know what time it is.

I started after her.

I'd almost opened my mouth when a car idled by and picked her off the park, my presence and my life.

Forever.

What's a korope?

A small bus provided by the SU of my school to take students to and from school. In return for a slightly reduced cost of T-fare, the korope bus drivers were allowed to take as many as 10 passengers in a bus originally designed to take 7 passengers.

P.S.
Even the reduced cost benefit is gone now since students now pay 50 naira for korope - the same cost of using a cab. Unilorin is not very orderly.

ALBINOS - beyond the complexion

In the middle of the night when the world was fast asleep, a night dubiously unusual for its unabridged quietness, barring the chirping of crickets and squeaking of insects, I insignificantly opened my eyes and noticed a trace of torchlight peeping through our hut. I was immersed in fear. Papa had said he wouldn't come back the night to see us; he suspected the albino hunters might follow his trail and discover our hiding.

"Albino hunters", my heart skipped a second.

I watched in fright as I heard whispers, soft voices at the door, strange voices, they were cold voices. I shoved Pere so hard but he was buried in sleep. My heart started beating faster and louder that I thought they would hear the sound it made. I realised I couldn't wake Pere so I sneaked under the bed expecting the worst.
The door knob turned open and I saw two devilish men enter the hut and hurriedly pounced on Pere, lifted him from the bed and sliced off his left arm as he struggled in vain.

"This arm costs 2000 dollars" the short man said.
"I'll take the left arm" the other man grinned.
They were the albino hunters.

FORGET ME NOT

"Blood is thick, that's its nature, nothing sacrificial was done to achieve its form and nothing can change it yet love supersedes it, love creates many moments which the brain registers, the mind absorbs and ones soul gratifies with gladness. what I did him. Was my love instincts reminding me on the the importance of sacrifice. One thing I ask is that you forget me not" those last words were hurtful as death crown itself inevitable.

Its been Thirty-five year since the incident yet it hurts like it was an hour ago .I was fifteen playing my football outside the compound. Jane our maid was tending the flowers. A car was speedily approaching my direction, I was lost in play so i didn't notice. Jane ran toward me blocking the car from hitting me she was badly injured . i rushed to the scene lifting her up . immediately she pushed me aside, Again she was shaking cause an electric wire fell on her. The drunk driver hit the pool earlier. Neighbors came to aid her. She died on my mom asking that we forget her not. And here I am at her grave today weeping for my guardian Angel.

BIAFRA

She was the beauty of her motherland, and everyone respected and admired her. Unlike her fellow sisters, she had big dreams and was determined to fulfil her dreams regelardless of the obstacles that stood her way. She made her people proud and they returned the favour by making her their leader.

But life is not a bed of roses, you know. For those who envied her progress gathered in conspiracy against her. They denied her goodness and beauty, and they turned their backs against her. They swiftly forgot all her good deeds and rejected her; and she became an outcast in her motherland.

But she wasn't alone.
She had offsprings. Her children grew up quickly and they grew strong. It wasn't long until they rose against their oppressors. They fought for their mother, shed blood for their mother and died for their mother.
Who else could they die for, if not mother?

But, like every war, the only thing can match up to the number of bullets ejected is the number of people terminated. They grew weary of the lives lost and sought to make peace. And that was how the dreadful battle ended.
Days embraced days and became month(s); and months embraced months and became year(s) . They learned to live in oppression and marginalization.

But one cannot be fooled twice. Peace without equity is only ephemeral. Silence doesn't necessarily mean weakness. Mother's enemies never knew silence can be violent.

Mother's children were only studying their enemies. They knew that mother's enemies were cunning and witty, so they studied hard to match the enemies with those qualities. They acquired great knowledge and they have emerged once again, much more determined. This time they attacked with diplomacy under the leadership of one of mother's brave sons.
He brought the war to their legal doorsteps, wittingly avoiding violence.
He drew the first blood with a blunt sword of orientation. He equipped her mother's children with knowledge, and he gave them a motive.

The war has started and mother's children, despite the glaring disavatages, remain confident of victory.
They are fighting for their mother, and her name is BIAFRA.

A DATE WITH A NAIRALANDER

Few months ago, A Nairalander I really liked contacted me. I immediately entered a joyful mood. For the first time in 6 months, I rushed outside to buy malt which I mixed with condensed peak milk to celebrate this legendary feat. We fixed a date and I hurriedly called some friends and borrowed 5000.

ON the ‘D’ day, I charged my phone full hoping to take pictures and post on NL with this lady. Haven soaked my shirt in starch three days before and with a very good charcoal iron, I made sure my clothes were ‘gaithored’.With my brown sebago, and 250 naira ‘folce’ and gabbana glasses, I set out for the date.

I got in waiting for her only to see a lady in Mercedes cl 2016 parking in front of the restaurant. I was already looking for a backdoor to escape ‘sharpaly’ when she suddenly entered and sighted me. With a wide smile, she gave me a warm hug as my heavy northerner perfume entered her nostrils...

‘Is that your car beside the blue van outside ? that green one ?-She said as she balanced on the chair and hot salty sweat started dripping from my face immediately.

A CLOSE SHAVE WITH DEATH

Jessica hadn’t walked too far, when she heard moans coming from the opposite office. She moved closer, toward the direction of the noise, and what she saw, left her numb and dumbfounded.

Two MALE SENATORS were slouched in a sofa, making out and having the ‘Sex’ of their lives. Jessica gasped in stupefaction as she stood and watched how they ravaged each other without a care in the world. She recognized one of the Senators as Tom. Then as if acting on impulse, she brought out her cell phone and began to record the show.

Suddenly, another Senator grabbed her from behind and shoved her into the office.

“I didn’t see anything”, Jessica screamed. “Please, let me go!”. Senator Tom glared at her in silence, then he grabbed her cell phone and yelled. “Get out now!”.

As soon as Jessica got to her apartment, she picked up a few things from her room and stuffed them in her suitcase. Then she hurried out. She hadn’t walked too far when she heard a loud explosion that shook the foundation of the house. She turned back and stared in stupefaction. Then she whispered, “Jeez, that was close!”.
