Nothing bad with that vehicle ground clearance man. Anyone if free to disagree. Those are professionals building that vehicle and so far NA is satisfied, that's it.

It is a beauty to behold. Definitely one of the most beautiful MRAPs i have seen. You have the luxury of getting concerned with detractors. I could not care less.

The army will decide what it wants after state trials are done with.

Under 4 years, the Nigerian industry which did not exist before 2013 has so far built 7 different types of vehicles both for the domestic market and export.

When you think about it, that's impressive!

True, look at the Marauder. Its half the weight yet the wheel arches are spaced to allow for movement over difficult terrain. The Cougar and Caiman both 6x6 weigh in at 16 tons. Idk about NE Naij but the 4x4 config might well be a problem in soft sand present in much of NE Kenya and S Som.
Also IEDs are getting bigger and bigger while the enemy has also learned the technique of shaped charges! Seen the flying MRAP?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ft5y9spDhVk

IIRC the Igirigi had a mobility problem? Anyway this is a good looking vehicle with a high protection level.

25cm ground clearance on a 3,5m wheelbase? 19 tonn on a 4x4 configuration? This vehicle ain't going to war.

this is super cute. I honestly prefer this to the Chinese BIGFOOT. They should just add slat armour/iron cage to it and we are good to against RPGs.

Asthestically, it is quite a beautiful vehicle. Actually one of the more beautiful MRAPs i have seen.

However performance in the field is more critical. I hope it performs flawlessly!

The Big-foot in terms of performance is the best MRAP we currently have. That vehicle can take a beating.

For the Ara, slat armour is in for customer requirements. I'm sure it is going to have it's paces tested at the Special Vehicle Plant, after that , field deployment.

To the South Africans here. Just read about your red alert on Grace Mugabe. What happened to her diplomatic immunity?

Are you trying to say if the Zimbabwean govt has to send a presidential aircraft to take her out, you'll have the aircraft grounded?

Note : Diplomatic immutiny. You can't search the aircraft too.

Diplomatic immunity does not extend to the family of foreign state leaders.

It may be granted specifically, but it is not extended automatically.

Impressive. We need IFV's capability. I need a Nigerian company into missile defence systems maybe a huge amount on ToT will do.

I also think it is time we make our D-30 howitzers self-propelled, just like Algeria and Sudan have done.

However in our own case, an Armoured Innoson truck should be used as the tow.

Hmmm....I've checked air portability via a Charles. It seems it can fit.

http://www.theaviationzone.com/factsheets/c130_specs.asp

Length: 52 feet (15.8m);
Width: 10 feet, 3 inches (3.1m);
Height: 9 feet (2.7m)

Both the RGL 33,Cougar and Caiman will fit in a 130 cargo hold. If Pro Force adds a foot to the Ara to allow for higher wheel arches Idk.

Since it's a prototype, and the guys who design this often come to this thread (I believe). I can give my recommendations to them.

1. Obviously shift the compartments levels up, even by another extra 250mm

2. The compartments should not be welded on the hull, the hull becomes compromised during blasts. They should rather modular fit them, during blasts the little spacing passes off some blast energy BUT when the blast is bigger they fly off without damaging the hull.... Also, they're easily replaced when damaged by RPGs (at a distance) or small arms.

3. The location of the exhaust system (between the wheels) should be changed if they consider crossing rivers with the vehicle.

Those are my humble suggestions. Thanks

You sir, know of what you speak! Consider also the weight implications of a future RPG cage. You'll add minimum a 1.5 tons ,maybe 2 tons depending on the steel alloy used. You all do know these days everyone has the latest RPG including the 29 series;the RPG 7 shown here is considered obsolete even by the ragged mofos on our continent.

If you don't enter the missile systems market within the next 5 years, I would say don't bother.

If you don't own a submarine withing blablabla, I'll say don't bother.

Now the navy is interested.

We don't need to develop to gain a market share. We can for our military alone. Eg DRDO projects only few other countries use DRDO products.

Owning/buying are separate from making. Its the exact same reason why every mechanic in the deepest bush knows what a bearing is, but only a tiny handful of countries actually produce bearings. New entries will always be behind the market in such a specialized technical field.

Missile designers are currently working on 5th generation technology. Your first attempt won't be technically close to that, I think you know that. Neither will your 2nd attempt. So your military will agree to use them why exactly? Unless you run a separate intense research programme & approach your military in 15-20 years time with a solid product.

Not really.

It was the change to a double engine fighter that delayed things. But yes the industry overcharged the SADF.

We all know the "former Buccaneer pilot commander" theory that destroyed the SAAF fighter dream at the last minute. Nevertheless, there should have been at least a 1:1 wind tunnel model of either plane... The later model should have been on a prototype phase considering the engineering skills and money that was involved.

Unless again they decided to take as much money as they could, so deliberately slowed down the production time because the money was coming and the airforce had the Atlas Cheetah in full force upgrade which was theoretically even better than the latest Angolan MiGs and their airframes were going to hold until the first decade of the new Millennium... So why the rush?

Always remember this, the contractors always sleep with the politicians when it comes to weapons acquisition or development. The tax payer and the Treasurer are the i.diots who don't even know how much a single aircraft component costs, so when a product is not delivered after so much money has been spent the "Buccaneer pilot theory" is invented.

Mmmmh....bros I don't know o. I'm hoping that Ara vehicle is a prototype that will undergo further refinement. I thought MRAPs had v-shaped hulls to deflect explosive blasts away from the bottom, not the flat base of this ARA. The ground clearance equally looks really low. Finally, it's fabrication looks....well..kinda crude. Well I hope the design will be refined further, just like the PF LAV series. That said kudos to PROFORCE. Good job.

Maybe we could learn a thing or two from the Russians

KGB Reportedly Gave Arab Terrorists a Taste of Brutality to Free Diplomats
January 07, 1986

JERUSALEM — The KGB has adopted novel, brutal and apparently effective methods of dealing with terrorists who attack Soviet interests in the Middle East, an Israeli newspaper reported Monday.

The Jerusalem Post said the Soviet secret police last year secured the release of three kidnaped Soviet diplomats in Beirut by castrating a relative of a radical Lebanese Shia Muslim leader, sending him the severed organs and then shooting the relative in the head.

The incident began when four Soviet diplomats were kidnaped last September by Muslim extremists who demanded that Moscow pressure the Syrian government to stop pro-Syrian militiamen from shelling rival Muslim positions in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli.

The militiamen, the Jerusalem paper said, did not cease their attacks, and the body of one of the Soviet diplomats, Arkady Katkov, was found a few days later in a field in Beirut.

The KGB then apparently kidnaped and killed a relative of an unnamed leader of the Shias' Hezbollah (Party of God) group, a radical, pro-Iranian group that has been suspected of various terrorist activities against Western targets in Lebanon.

Parts of the man's body, the paper said, were then sent to the Hezbollah leader with a warning that he would lose other relatives in a similar fashion if the three remaining Soviet diplomats were not immediately released. They were quickly freed.

The newspaper quoted "observers in Jerusalem" as saying: "This is the way the Soviets operate. They do things--they don't talk. And this is the language Hezbollah understands."

Six Americans, missing for up to two years, are presumed to be kidnaping victims in Lebanon.

My thoughts on the vehicle. I kinda understand about ground clearance especially if you encounter or manoeuvre boulder like terrain or any inclined ramp.

From the pictures, the creation of the step ladders and possibly a storage port on the lower end of the chassis is what contributes to the low profile of the vehicle. It may be however be possible to install independent suspension upgrades, to improve their off-road performance.

As for our hilux in the NE, we can go on to build on a smaller 4 X 4 SUV chassis similar to the M ATV Oshkosh. However, Just remember after all the addition of this mraps, the fuel bill for running this minimal 7 litre engines alone... Then you'll understand why the hierarchy still favours the nimble but dangerous Toyotas.

The Hilux will not be taken out of service. That's frankly impossible. Richer countries such as Mexico and Brazil deploy them in their own COIN/CTCOIN ops. Even Russia deploy Pick-ups in Syria.

However, with the new additions of MRAPs to the AOR, we expect to see a more acceptable ratio of MRAPs to Pick-ups.
