It has been a month and some weeks since the incident.



Red, yellow, blue, green, pink and purple balloons and party streamers hang from the ceiling in Laura's large pink and white house. Damilola, skipping around in a birthday gown, seems to have forgotten the incident completely. Well , she's only three , her third birthday being marked today, so why would she ? Laura however, is full of some new wariness as she follows her daughter's happy movements around the large parlour, Barney's music turned up at an averagely tolerable level while the little girl imitates the images on the screen. " Mummy , mummy " The little girl tries to climb a chair to get unto a large glass table in the middle of the room and gets a warning glance from her mother. She blushes and sits abruptly on the floor the way kids sometimes do when they walk and lose their balance. She's got Laura smiling again.


Laura had not found it funny when she discovered that her woes had risen from one of Dare's supposed flings, or the only one, as he had tried to explain, subtly begging behind this lengthy explanation. She had refused to see him for the whole month after she and her daughter had gotten home, and he had to take a flight back to Abuja the very next day after arriving in Lagos , when in her own just rage she had threatened to call the police if he stayed outside her door, still pleading as he had from early afternoon until late evening. Explanation? What explanation ? He did not deserve his love and his daughter if he could put them through this kind of danger over another woman he had carelessly dealt with. She had to overlook the incident however, when she realized he was still the only man she loved and the only person who really understood her, had always been there for her in the past. It had taken all her energy to forgive him enough to let him see his daughter again, as he is going to , on her birthday today.


The bell rings and her heart skips a beat. Would it be wise to let him in after all this ? It rings again. She gathers up her courage and strides to the door. He is there, gift boxes and flowers in his arms, obviously he's having a hard time holding them all. He looks at her with a wary expression and his eyes are watery with this joy at seeing her and his smile is wide despite the regret and realization on the situation she sees behind his smile. " Laura. I'm .. " She doesn't allow him to complete his sentence. She hugs him suddenly and all the boxes fall to the floor. The cat, which has been standing outside by the door for a while, is startled and jumps away to sulk in the garden.
They smile at each other. And Dare realizes, that if he loses her, the only woman that makes him happy, his heart will be in shambles forever.

" I'm sorry, I'm so sorry" They start to pick the gift boxes from the floor together . "Mommy! " Both are startled as the little girl , attracted by the noise, skips suddenly into their view. She holds her mothers leg and looks up at the man before her , trying to understand what's happening. Tears cloud Laura's eyes as she gently bends down and holds her little girl, looks into her eyes. " Don't worry Dammy. Its daddy.....remember I told......" Before her sentence is over the little girl leaps into her fathers waiting arms happily and hugs him tight " Daddy, been waiting for daddy" She tries to form the little sentence with difficulty in her baby voice and words. The man is more than grateful. The way he holds his daughter tightly, tears streaming down his eyes, speaks volumes. They go inside.



" Daddy, daddy, wedding.......we going to have a weddiggg...." Damilola tries to convey her message. Laura and Dare smile at her and Dare looks up at Laura, eyes sparkling. " Well of course darling, " he replies " Why in the world wouldn't there be "






Now, this is what I call fiction. I see no single fault in this, except for one thing, you can do better if you always take your time with them, reading over and over again.
