CHAPTER THIRTY SIX

The pain was still sharp; it was almost like being hit by a bullet. Not that she had been shot at before, but she could imagine it after being hit severally with the butt of a gun. Drying her tears with the sleeve of her chiffon top, she raised her body, half sitting on the bed, flanked on both sides by a police officer and Darasimi. She turned to the police officer that sat on the single straight backed chair by the bedside. “Where is Dr Deji?” She asked, looking around, as if she expected him to be in the room. “He left my bedside immediately you entered and he promised to come back in one hour.”

“Em…he was here today?” The officer asked in awe. Dr Deji was declared dead on arrival. ‘BOD’ was written on his paper work.

“Yes, he left not quite long.” She answered in the affirmative. Darasimi sighed in resignation. It’s been four days and her mum had claimed to see Dr Deji sitting at her bedside every day since she first regained consciousness. Tears streamed down her face as she watched her mother narrate his visits to the police officer.

Liz’s groans and pains was not lost on Darasimi. She knew Liz was still feeling some pains, the police questioning was straining her. She stood up from Liz’s bedside and walked to the other side, facing the officer. “Officer, please, I think my mum still needs some rest. Let her rest…”
Liz turned to face Darasimi again. “As if on cue, the matron opened the door and entered the semi-private ward Liz shared with a young woman who sprained her ankle during an okada ride. “Please, let Aunty rest, officer. The doctor will discharge her today and you can continue your investigation tomorrow.”

Sharp inhalation. “But she told me she’s up to it, a bi, madam…” The IPO started to protest.

“She still needs rest…” The matron cut her short.

“I think I can manage”. Liz said. “It’s been four days now and I believe we need to get to the root of this soon.”

“That’s better, madam.” The IPO smiled victoriously. Darasimi sat down and the matron left the room after checking on the other patient.
Free of distraction and protests, the IPO drew her chair closer and cleared her throat. “ Can you try and tell me what happened again? Your daughter might have left out some vital details.”

Liz recalled everything easily…

She was expecting Deji…she had thought it was him at the gate…then she saw the unregistered car and the two tough looking occupants find their way into the compound.

“Go inside with Morenike.” She shouted at Darasimi when she sensed danger.

“No, mummy. Besides, Morenike’s bath water is still here and they’ll know there is a baby…” Darasimi had fired back.
In desperation, she had pushed her and the baby inside her room and locked the door, just as the hoodlums barged in through the kitchen door.

“Madam, we have come in peace.” The one that appeared to be the leader assured her in a harsh tone that betrayed the sentence he just uttered. “We need you to sign this document now.”

Another one handed him a bulky brown envelope. A scar ran through his left eye lids, barely concealed by the mask he wore over the upper part of his face. “Boss, here is the document.”

Snatching it from his hand, he opened it and brought out a neatly typed 5-page document. “Sign this now.” He commanded.

“O…o...okay…okay sir.” Liz was ready to do their bid so they can leave fast. Unfortunately, the innocent baby chose to crave attention at that moment. The 'boss' spotted the bath water, his brain heat up.

“Who else is here with you?” ‘Boss’ asked in fluent English.
Liz burst into unrestrained tears, “My granddaughter and my daughter. Please don’t hurt them, I will sign the document.”

“Nasty lying biatch.” The leader said under his breath.

“I…I…didn’t lie sir…I would have told you if you had asked. They are still sleeping.”

Then she felt the first bang of the gun butt on her shoulder. Several other hits followed in succession. “You are supposed to be alone.”
Her eyes rolled involuntarily in their sockets. Tears flowed freely. The other guy was the one that hit her hardest.

“Should I waste them, boss?” He asked his commandant.

‘Boss’ sneered. “Trigger, just get them here, and be fast about it.” He turned to Liz, “Madam, sign this document now. No time to waste time.”
She quickly scanned the document with eyes already reddened by tears and shook her head. “Si…s…sir… I’m not nee Williams, s…s..sir.” I guess there is a mix up sir.”

“Just sign the dotted lines and stop reading!” He’ roared, almost pulling the trigger in the process. Liz’s hands shook. She hurriedly scribbled her signature across the pages. Who cared if she was mistaken for a Williams? But she already noted the coincidences…same village with mama, same birth year, different birth place and different father’s name…whoever this Williams is, she is from her mother’s village and must be warned. She glanced up and saw the other guy enter. Fear shook her violently. Who cared about this Williams woman who was about to lose a fortune to bad people? She cared more about her daughter and granddaughter. Did he kill them inside?

“Where are they?” She screamed. It earned her another dirty slap from her assailant.

“Boss, it’s a new mum and she had just put to bed. The baby and mum are fast asleep. Let’s ignore them.”

“We have to get rid of them. My gun doesn’t work with a silencer…you know we have to…” He made a throat slashing sign and tilted his head towards Liz.

“Boss, let’s spare them…please.”

His pleas angered his colleague and he roared violently. Liz shook so violently now. “What’s with the sentiment now?” The boss asked, his anger temporarily directed at him. “Trigger, wetin na?”

“Boss, please, Control your temper.” The one called ‘Trigger’ half pleaded, half threatened.

‘Boss’ shrugged his shoulders and folded the signed document back, carefully putting it back in the envelope. He cocked his gun and pointed it at Liz, ready to pull the trigger. Just then, they heard the kitchen door open, and Deji rushed inside, shaking. ‘Boss’ pulled the trigger. Two shots were fired. Deji went down. Blood splashed to every corner. Darasimi screamed and rushed to the living room. She heard a car race away. The shooter or shooters were gone. Liz and Dr Deji were down. She screamed for help. The house was filled to the brim within minutes…some carried Dr Deji, some carried Liz, some took pictures with their mobile phones, Others gossiped.

“So, why did the other guy cover you, Miss Darasimi? Did he know you? Do you know him…?” The IPO turned to Darasimi.

“No, they both wore face masks all through.” Liz answered.

“Let her speak, madam.” The IPO said. “He was sent to bring her and the baby. He suddenly changed his tone after entering the room. Who was he?”

“I…I…I didn’t even see his face, officer. Maybe he felt pity, maybe he thought I just put to bed…maybe God took control.” She stared at her slippered feet.

“And the Williams part…has your mother told you of any relationship between her family and theirs?”She asked Liz.

“Not at all. I just heard about a Williams that worked there as a teacher a long time ago…not related to my mother.”

“Okay.” The IPO folded her jotter and rose to her feet. “Rest well now, we’ll continue later.” She turned to Darasimi, “Your mother, Mrs Williams, do you think she’s related to this Williams in any way?”

“This is my mother. And she has told you she was mistaken for a Williams.” She snapped.

“Your baby is with her right away…she is your…”

“Please, officer. Don’t pry into our family issue. I’m an adult and I know what I’m saying. Besides, my baby is not with her. The baby is with my grandmother at Okeado.”

“Maybe they were after Mrs Ella Williams…” The officer finally asked.

“No. They are two different people. I saw part of the document. It was meant for a woman who is the daughter of a Mr Williams, not a wife.”Liz said with a frown.

“It’s ok, madam.” The IPO said. She has been on the case since neighbours came to report the shooting. So far, no arrests have been made. “I assure you we’ll get to the root of this matter.” She promised her in the usual police way.
She left hurriedly.

Thirty seven

Newly discharged, Liz and Darasimi walked towards the gate, each caught up in her web of emotions. Both headed in the same direction, both out for different purposes. One on a journey of self-discovery, the other trying to clean up after making a mess of everything she once held dear. The police officer walked behind them. They have rejected the offer of a police escort, claiming she was not the target.

“Where are you off to now?” The officer asked. They have been asked not to return to the house, already tagged ‘crime scene’.

“My mother’s house. The baby is there.”

“Ok.” The officer said without displaying any emotions. “I thought you would have preffered your brother’s house. He said he was coming to take you there.”

“I can’t go to his house, officer. Deji doesn’t know the place and he may find it difficult to find me.” She said.
Darasimi and the officer exchanged glances. The doctor and a police officer had broken the news of Deji’s death to Liz just that morning, but she had dismissed them with a shrug of her shoulders, assuring them they were making a mistake- Deji had just left her bedside. “Denial stage.” She had heard the psychologist say to the doctor. Liz had smiled and said thank you.

“Sit with the gate keepers.” Darasimi said as they waited for an empty cab at the gate. “I should have brought my car, I hate it when you stand in the sun and wait for cabs.”

“Don’t worry, go and make peace with Ella and your dad first, let her mind be at rest.”
Darasimi laughed heartily. “You think she’s worried? I’m sure she’s glad the baby is not around to disturb them.”

“You have a wrong opinion of Ella, my dear. “

“I hope so.”

**********************************************************************************

They finally boarded a taxi and in no time, they were knocking on mama’s door at Okeado. Mama was bathing the baby when they were ushered in by Tobi. They hugged and laughed and tried to catch up on old gists while mama and Liz took care of the baby.
Moments later, with Tobi and Darasimi occupied with the baby outside, mother and daughter sat down to talk.

“Thank God for your life, my dear. Thank God those boys did not shoot at you!” Mama said, her hands in the air in praise.

Mama sniffed and coughed lightly, wiping her face with the tip of her wrapper. “What happened to Dr Deji?” She asked her daughter quietly.

Liz waved her off. “Don’t mind them. They said he died!”

Mama burst into another round of tears, sobbing loud enough for the neighbours to hear. She had nearly cried her eyes out when the news of his death was broken to her by Richard. She had prayed silently it was not real. Then Darasimi had confirmed it. Looking at her daughter’s frail body, her heart broke over and over again.

Mother and daughter held each other and cried uncontrollably while Darasimi and Tobi wiped tears off their faces.

Later in the evening, mother and daughter sat down on the bed in the bed room, while Tobi watched TV in the adjoining living room that also doubled as the guestroom. Darasimi had since left with the baby at Liz and mama’s insistence.

“But maami, I wonder why they asked me to sign a document with the name ‘Elizabeth Williams. The real Elizabeth Williams is my age mate, and from your village.” She took a casual glance at mama as she expressed her concern. To her surprise, mama’s eyes were flooded by another round of tears, tears of pain and sorrow. She stood up quickly and grasped mama’s shoulders, shaking her throbbing body in the process. “Maami! K I lo de? Why are you crying?” She asked in awe.

“Why are they after this person? Did you read the reason?”

“Well, I wasn’t allowed to read per se…but I noticed the paper is about them making her give them her inheritance. The father must have been very rich.”

“Hmmm…oro wa, Elizabeth.” Mama patted pointed at the single plastic chair in her room.
Once she sat, mama smiled and shook her head. “What is it, maami? I know you told us about one Williams that…”

“You are Elizabeth Williams, and it was not a case of mistaken identity. We should be worried about your safety if they’ve already found you.”

“Wo..wo..wow, maami, what’s going on here?”

“I will cut a long story short…”

**********************************************************************************

Mama paused after thirty minutes. Liz stood up without saying a word. Accepting her fate without emotion.
As she headed for the door, mama said, “Won’t you say anything?”

“I have a fortune to reclaim, maami.” She said with a smile. “I hope it’s not too late.”

“I’m sorry it took this long for you to know the truth.”

Liz raised an eyebrow and twisted her mouth in an I-don’t-care manner. “I really don’t care maami. You are my mother and you did what you think is best for me. You met a man who molested you and impregnated you. Another man helped you by marrying you, the whole village thinks he’s the father of your illegitimate child…maami, you did what you had to do!” She said in an emotion laden voice.

Mama walked up to her and hugged her. “I lied to myself for so long I forgot the truth.” She sobbed. Liz hugged her tightly and whispered “You did your best, maami”.

Mama smiled sadly. Liz picked her phone and dialled a number.

“Hello, officer. I’ll like to see you urgently.”
She ended the call and grabbed her purse, heading for the door.

“Ni bo lo da?” Mama asked as she turned the knob.

“Mama, this stage of my life is called: Fighting back and it starts now.”

Chapter thirty eight

”You are under arrest for the murder of Dr Deji Benson and for the attempted murder of Mrs Liz Jayeola. You have the right to remain silent as whatever you say will be used against you at the court of law.” Otunba looked on in shock as one of the plainclothes policemen that stormed his house ranted. He didn't know what hit him the most…the fact that Dr Deji Benson was killed in his house and an attempt made on his Liz’s life, or the fact that he was being arrested for his murder. For the first time in several years, tears streamed down his handsome face.

Ella strolled in from the garden, clad in a pink robe, phones in hand. She stared at the police officers, one after the other. Finally, she rested her gaze on Otunba. Ella and Otunba remained eye to eye, each holding on to the stare as if it were precious. Ella moved her gaze away first and faced the police officer shoving otunba towards the rickety police van parked outside. “What’s going on here?” She asked.

“Madam, meet us at Olode police station if you are interested in what happened.” The team leader offered rudely.
Ella said, “How dare you barge into the house to take my man away and refuse to tell me why?”
Please call Yomi.” Otunba told her before he climbed the van. How he became a suspect still beat him.

Otunba’s cuffed hands clenched again and again, his mind in turmoil. The drive to the police headquarters was a traumatic one for him. He dodged and hid his face each time the van slowed down in traffic, avoiding gaze and sneers from passers-by. After all, anybody cuffed in a police van is guilty until proven innocent. His mind wondered far and near, to the day he first set his eyes on Ella, to the day she left, to the day she resurfaced in his life. All the trips abroad, the nice cars and clothes…Liz and Tobi, their cries of heartbreak. Tears streamed down his face continuously. “How did I get here?” He asked no one in particular.

“Take it easy o, oga.” The policeman riding with him at the back said, probably out of pity.

“Thank you, officer. Please, can I borrow your…”

“shhhh…” The officer shushes him with a finger across his lips. He gave him a sign he understood his request but couldn’t help- at least not then. Otunba understood. He wiped his face and nodded his understanding. He checked the name tag on his chest- Denis. He wanted to play the tribe card to score favour, but Denis could be from any of the tribes in the country. He decided to be a man and face his woes. Neither spoke a word till they alighted at the station.
Otunba looked up and down as he was led to the holding area- his first unscheduled visit to a police station. Previous visits were to make a report and a time he lost his id cards.

“Drop your phones…”

“Otunba, you get visitor o.” Officer Denis announced as he fumbled with the cell lock.
“Who?” Otunba managed to ask. He had been behind bars for just slightly over two hours, but it felt like two weeks. The experience was harrowing. Like Denis and the other officers on duty told him, he was still a lucky person, a vip. In his cell, there were three other suspects who spoke decent English and were kind to him. Two of them were undergraduates who had the misfortune of returning from the club late at night, in a state of the earth car. Yahoo boys, they were tagged. The other, a company executive who fought with his wife’s lover- a bigger than him. Ella’s name had paved way for him.
“ Na your lawyer sir.” The officer said. A huge smile broke through his lips, spreading across his face. Detainee and detainer walked side by side to one of the offices around a corner. Still smiling, otunba sat down and placed his cuffed hands on the wooden table that sat between him and Barrister Yomi. “Ore, ki lo n se le?” Otunba asked. “ I expected you to be here earlier!”
“I came as soon as Liz called me. I had to talk to my friends here, so as to know more about this case.”
“Liz called you? How did…”
“Darasimi told her when Ella insisted on getting you a different lawyer. She came here, but was not allowed to see you…” Barrister Yomi told him.
Otunba stood up angrily and banged his cuffed hands on the wooden table.
“Easy o.” The officer shouted from an adjoining room. “Lawyer, hope all is well?” He asked.
“Thanks, officer. We are fine.” Otunba answered him. “Ore, she brought this upon me! I’m being held for the murder of her lover an an attempt on her own life!”
Barrister Yomi rose to his feet and held his friend by the shoulder. “She didn’t mention your name as a suspect. She was even shocked. She reportedly mentioned Ella as the suspect, unfortunately, the evidence points at you! Your car, your sim card…found at the crime scene. Besides, there is a motive. He was your wife’s lover.”
Otunba stared at his friend in shock. “I’m sure it was a set up.” He said finally.
“Of course, I believe so too.” His friend agreed. “But by who?”
“Please, get me out of here on bail first, and fast. I will get to the root of this.”
Barrister Yomi’s brows were creased in a frown. “ This is a murder case ore, bail is usually extremely difficult, but I will try my best.” He promised. The officer barged into the near empty room and led Otunba back to his cell. Barrister Yomi’s visit and promise cheered him up a bit. He was in a better mood as the officer gave him a gentle shove back in his cell. He still wondered why Ella wanted a different lawyer, or why she has not been there to see him since his lock-down. Then it struck him.
