The King of Saudi Arabia has issued a decree allowing women to drive, state media has said.

The order issued by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, overturned a longstanding policy which had become a powerful symbol of oppression. The conservative kingdom is currently the only country where the act of women driving is forbidden.

The move was announced on television and also by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the royal decree mandating the creation of a ministerial body to give advice on the practicalities of the edict within 30 days and a full implementation of the order by June 2018.

The royal decree will implement the provisions of traffic regulations, including the issuance of driving licences for men and women alike,” the state-run Saudi Press Agency said.

Saudi Arabia is a Muslim monarchy ruled according to Sharia law, with the royal decree stipulating that the new rules must “apply and adhere to the necessary Sharia standards”. State media said that the Council of Senior Religious Scholars, the country's highest religious authority that advises the King on religious matters had approved the permissibility of the decree.

Good development, it's better to be late than never.

I foresee a situation where the cost of insuring a woman's car would be more expensive. Having in mind that women have quarter brains(according to one Saudi cleric) _the insurable risk is higher.

Any woman that can ride a man comfortably _can also ride a car. No much difference.

I mean it, they both have stick shifts, come in different transmissions/engine type and can accelerate/decelerate _depending on how the woman rides them.

The fact that their Ministry of Foreign Affairs is handling this shows they just want to be seen as progressive by the outside world and not that they're really committed to ending discrimination against women.
Adult women still need permission from a male guardian to travel, marry, go to the hospital, rent an apartment, work and to even leave prison after serving a sentence. Now imagine she is not in good terms with that guardian. Imagine an irresponsible male guardian decides to demand money or sex from her before giving permission for very basic things. Or even decides to punish her by withholding his permission for going to the hospital when she's sick.
Unfortunately, Western countries will prefer to shout about North Korea when almost half of the population of another country live in everyday oppression.

Finally they entered the 20th century!

Their primitive culture and Islamic overdo it not a problem to the world and sure doesn't pose an equal threat like Noko.

Their country their women.... They have used religion to enslave their people. If the people cannot open their eyes and mouth to demand freedom then they must be enjoying it.

If western countries ask them to abolish Islamic rule and embrace freedom people will start shouting upandan. Leave every country to practice the system that works for them biko
