From independence to our present day, Nigeria as a country has been churning out first-class graduates from different universities that are scattered across the country like the creeks of Calabar. Often times, we are greeted with news headlines on newspapers, television, radio and online media such as: '45 Bagg First-Class From Migwor University' or '38 Graduate With First-Class From University of Vrendo'. Now, I ask, where are these first-class graduates? What have they been able to contribute to and achieve in science, art, technology and other facets of life? Is it that their 'intelligence' was only expressible on thick papers called certificates?

How come we still can't manufacture wrist-watches even with all our first-class graduates and professors in Engineering?

How come we have the raw materials to construct roads, yet we need some Arab fellows with a pass in National Diplomas to supervise road construction projects in Nigeria?!!! Where are our first-class graduates in Civil Engineering?

Where are all the project works that were defended in school before graduation? Probably resting on those old dusty cockroach and rat-infested shelves as usual

Our agricultural productivity is very low in many areas, yet we have been churning our first-class graduates and professors from various faculties of Agriculture in different tertiary institutions (universities and polytecnics).

Most private universities in Nigeria award first-class degrees as if they were oranges, kuli-kuli, biscuits or bubble gums. Each time these universities dish out their usual rounds of first-class degrees, it reminds me of how our aunties and uncles used to hand us many sweets, biscuits and gums during their children's birthday parties in the early 80's. To be sincere, I've met some first-class graduates from these schools who didn't even know the main difference between a university and a polytecnic. They couldn't impress me!

Most of the indigenous products we use in this country are the handwork and brainchild of folks who obtained technical knowledge from technical institutions and other sources within and outside Nigeria.

Those that studied abroad and bagged first-class degrees and the professors who were tutored abroad usually come back home with no significant contribution in science, art, technology and other areas, irrespective of the fact that most of them studied under scholarships or grants.

Until the educational system in Nigeria is over-hauled, we are going to witness more and more half-baked and quarter-baked first-class holders and professors who are products of a system that promotes mediocrity at the expense of value and quality.

by the way OP, i'm one of those first class graduates. my first class friends and i are too busy trying to escape this hellhole and survive with the pittance we earn in the meantime. no time to manufacture watches.
where were you when sensitive jobs(medical, engineering, science related jobs in research) were shared based on who you know? how many first class are in govt employ(Research institutions, NLNG, NNPC, CBN, FIRS, steel mills, old PHCN etc).
i hope you dont expect my father who struggled with my school fees to fund those research too. he's busy trying to get his pension and gratuities from "constituted authorities".

Our First Class graduates and brilliant scholars are doing their best. You find them mostly in academia, few are in industry. In the academia they make micro-production of models and prototypes which are excellent products if scaled up. They are not entrepreneurs and not in politics so they would not appear popular based on your definition. Bu if you can interprete scholarly indices then you will know they are doing really great. The bulk of the work in on entrepreneurs and government to step in and commercialize these scholars' work to grow the economy.

Good one. The problem with our educational system is that it has made making As and Bs a priority. Students are eager to make them than to actually learn. Even those who tend to learn will end up being branded lecturers and most of them end up der. No real learning in the educational system

Government is really trying in term of research but our Professors or Researchers see the research grant as avenue to enrich themselves. Have you ever noticed that immediately they approved money for any research the first thing you will see is vehicle instead of facing the thorough research, they would be using vehicle to impress other up and down and left research undone. Secondly most of our scholars getting money from TETFUND for training are not using it for the purpose, you will see them enjoying money in Nigeria while they suppose to be on training in Abroad. Infact new TETFUND boss complained on this not up to 2month ago.

Ok people have been dishing out write-ups, pls what do u want us students to do...??! ask lecturer a simple question and he just turns the question back at u, make fun of u in class that all he doesn't know the answer to the question yet he claims PHD (I am a doctor now, call me doctor)..lecturers that fail students when they see that the answer the student provided is different from the one they gave them in their note, (and the student took his/her time to research and got a more reasonable answer from the internet).

Lecturer will enter class and tell u straight up do not give me answer from the internet, only give me answers that I gave u...(it means LA cram LA pour) our lecturers are bleeped up.

Guess who is the minister of education a northerner. I am not hating but these guys hate education, they are only after the money in the educational sector that's all, our educational sector needs someone who knows the pain and trauma of students and who ready (desperately) to fix it..

Our educated system is so much of theories that are not even suited to our needs. First class graduates want the nicest job to make money and nothing more. They don't have the will to embark on research to come out with innovative ideas that can translate into tangible product. Our professor don't do research to make the society better because they are unwilling or more accurately they are unable. They see success as a destination and not a journey. This is the more reason no Nigeria varsity can rank among top universities in Africa let alone the world.

OP, it is because of what the Nigerian dream is made out to be: go to school, GET A HIGH PAYING, OIL COMPANY JOB (Government jobs or private practice are OK too, as long as they rake in big money), get married, pop out three or four kids, etc. That's the goal of most people going to the university. The first class graduates o, the second class upper, lower, even the third class ones. Its just that the first class graduates are more likely to achieve this 'Nigerian Dream'.

The oil companies have swallowed all our first class graduates, so who are we left with to teach the new generation? That's right. Those that 'failed'. By 'failure', I mean the ones that didn't get the juicy jobs and big appointments. I'm going to cough a statistic out of my ass right now but I bet its true- 90% of university lecturers in Nigeria would rather be doing something else with their life, guaranteed that it pays them a lot more than their current job. You go to any university in Nigeria and you see them- junior lecturers, senior lecturers, and professors- most seem to be angry about something. Frustrated. They might not show it openly, but push them a little and you'll see it. In FULL display. They are mad at their jobs, they're pissed off by the work they have to do. Which is why they do their jobs grudgingly, without putting in 200%. They just vomit the same things they 'learned', and sit at home waiting for their paychecks.

What does this translate to? Even worse graduates. The quantity of graduates churned out by higher institutions every year keeps increasing but the quality keeps reducing.

I am a first class student. In my fourth year now. Not a graduate yet. And you know what? I'll admit it too. I started my educational 'journey' chasing the 'Nigerian Dream' as well. I didn't give a sh*t about Civil Engineering, it was only my backup plan to fall back on if I eventually failed at what I love, which is music.

But somewhere, along the line, maybe I was 'awoken' by the poor quality of education (by my standards) I'm receiving in a University that's supposed to be one of the BEST in Nigeria. I had my childhood education in the United States and that laid a strong foundation for me. I know what teaching is supposed to be like. So I've decided. Unless the forces of the universe decide that I really should become a world famous RnB star that'll bring back music from the 90s, I'm going to become a University Professor AND RESEARCHER.

Upon graduation I'll move back to the US (hopefully) and specialize in certain fields that I found myself interested in while studying Civil Engineering, and work to get retained as a lecturer for a long time. Understand the system. Learn how things SHOULD BE DONE in a university. Then, I could return to Nigeria. Find a University that values excellence, and 'revolutionize' education over here.

This is all big talk. I hope I'll achieve it though. Lecturers get paid VERY well over there so I'm not worried about finances. I'm worried that I'll lose sight of my goal.

Your post shouldn't be directed to just the 1st class graduates, it should be directed to everyone of us.... Productivity shouldn't be based on the Class of degree.

first class graduates are supposed to be extremely intelligent and brilliant,if they cant do anything,what do you expect ,the others to do?

I once met an elect/elect & physics graduate of yabatech/unilag that cant repair an extension socket,he was a serving corps member then, i just weak for the dude, anytime he dey use sch boast for the dudes around him, i go just smile, i even admonished him to get a place to do practical intern to help his labour hunt, the guy said God will do it, he is into favor market, i just dey look am with one eye, make e come ask me as e dey go.
Our mechanical prof/grad are unable to change or know when to change a spark plug, yet they use different vocabulary to qualify *kazeem.
Till we change our notion as a nation in respect to political leadership, nothing is going to change.

aAlso, professionals should leave their comfort zone to aspire for post or join a party, look at tinubu, peter obi, ambode, kebbi governo,elrufai, minister for aviation(dont know his name), ikpeazu, etc, they are professionals before politics, they joined the game, a fayose will not use thugs to win election and appoint you just because you work for havard or cbn.
they should stop reciting text in class, office or media, they should do it in the society, they are afraid of failure when their lack of trying is even worse than failure itself.
