Why the battalion commanders in the 101 Brigade, such as Akagha, did not shoot Victor Banjo left me with reoccurring thoughts? If I had been a battalion commander under Victor Banjo at Ore, I would marched to the BD HQ and lay him to waste.

What was Ifeajuna's offence? Was he also Afonja? The Biafrans were never as innocent as they try to make the world believe.

So much clout they have to lead the only meaningful offensive by the Biafrans throughout the war.
Biafra was never interested in offensive, the war was a war of survival.

My dear lady, as a lecturer at University of Ibadan, do yourself a favour and consult the library there to read the accounts of events, even by Yoruba Military officers.
Your father was playing a double game and got caught up in the act

Read ' the five majors', 'why we struck' and even John de st Jorre and Susan Cronjes accounts of the Civil War.
Your father was also guilty of conspiracy and murder, hence Gowon imprisoned him
He betrayed the Nigerian side
He also betrayed the Biafra side
Ask Gowon what became of him. He was no scapegoat, so don't distort the facts
HE WAS A TRAITOR, PURE AND SIMPLE.

Records don't lie. Even yorubas acknowledged Banjo was a traitor. That is why there are no memorials to remember him anywhere in yorubaland, and his name is stigmatized in the west.

That is not what Ojukwu said. He said in his own words that Nigerians will be shocked at what was coming to them, that Biafrans have the largest army in the world.
If boasting alone can win wars you will have a biafran passport today.

Ojukwu wasn't a coward. He intended to fight the war to the end but failed to calculate his stakes which where high. For a secessionist Biafra to have succeeded, they needed foreign allies who were ready to supply them arms and ammunition at any beck and call which Gowon cut off on most sides but Nigeria had the advantage 'cause it already had allies. Britain for example. Who wins a war without arms?. It wasn't wrestling.

Would you have rather let him lo0se and give Gowon the joy of having his head on a spike for felony and other charges?. I guess "No" so he let the agitation die and deprive Gowon the joy of having him executed.

Don't be too harsh brother, that was a different point in Nigerian history. I don't blame those who extended what they thought was a hand of fellowship to others.
The way the Biafrans repaid him is what is alarming.

Bros, im not harsh, you just have to look at the comments of these ungrateful ibows here now to come to the same conclusions. This is to serve as a lesson to those that always want to think igboes can be trusted.

How can any yoruba man in his right senses colluded with ibows to come and overrun yorubaland ?

so this woman is victor banjo daughter.she taught me psychiatry at Ibadan medical school.she is a professor of psychiatry.

No wonder. She needs to brush up on her History. It's clear that she is completely clueless about her father's role in the January 1966 Coup.
Let her study a bit of history and her father's ignoble role, and why no one in the west mourned him, and gave him a pariah status

Then she will not come out to spew this kind of rubbish and make a big fool of herself here. Her father was cunning and ambitious and betrayed his own people and was instrumental to the deaths of other Yoruba military officers in 1966.

The reasons why the key actors in the civil war has refuse to speak on the banjo issue is because banjo has already been blacklisted by the Nigerian side long before the outbreak of the war and instead of sticking to the biafra side like philip effiong, he tried to prove his loyalty to the federal side by passing information to them. Which was his undoing. His children should get over it and come to terms with the fact that their father was a traitor.

Madam Prof

From your story.

I can see.

Nigeria government put your dad in prison.

Ojukwu mercifully released him.

As an afonja, he tried to betray Ojukwu to buy himself favor in the sight of Nigeria army.

So stop crying. Your Afonja dad betray himself to death.

At a time like this, it affords a golden opportunity to set the record straight so as to heal the broken heart, Lt Col. Victor Banjo being the then Head of Engineering was arrested after the first coup on mere suspicion that has connections and quite close to those that staged the coup

Recalled that he was one of the 'elite' Army, so vast and informed, History records that he was instrumental to the emergence of General Johnson Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi becoming the first military president, though short-lived, When the Biafran troop captured Midwest, in his Midwestern broadcast of 9th August,1967,He mentioned the word, on which he coined, (Hausa-Fulani Oligarchy) for the first time, though the Biafra troops were beaten back in the following month in September and from then onwards one Biafran town after the other fell to the Nigerian Troops,
Now Biafra later traced the collapse of the Midwestern invasion to alleged sabotage to its 2 influential officers namely Lt Col. Victor Banjo (Commander of the Midwest Invading Troops) and Emmanuel Ifeajina, Rumor has it that they were shot on the suspicion of the alleged sabotage,
Could he have been killed by the federal Troops in War Front or really shot by the Biafran Troop??... Considering his closeness with Dim Ojukwu and Aguiyi Ironsi, only time will tell.....

Ojukwu was a coward and a self centred person, if Ojukwu wasn't a coward he would have surrendered himself and won't leave his people in the hands of death. Ojukwu fled to Ivory Coast via Sao Tome and Principe. As for Banjo, was a traitor and a double agent. Every double agents in this life always die mysteriously. Banjo wasn't different from Ashraf Marwan a double agent that worked for both Egypt/Israel.

People shouldn't take side of anyone in Nigerian civil war, have read different account both side were fighting for power, money and influence.

Professor Olayinka Omigbodun, Sorry to say , but your father met his Waterloo as a traitor.

Why exhume this memory that is painful for your family after all these years. 50 years?

You cannot expect that with passage of time people would have forgotten

Victor Banjo was an unscrupulous and cunning military officer who would sacrifice anybody for his own advantage

That's why he he conspired to have so many of his colleagues killed to pave way for his rapid promotion

Unfortunately for him, Gowon imprisoned him, and would have had him executed like some other officers

Even after 50 years, History's verdict on your father is that HE WAS A TRAITOR,
Don't try to alter the facts and portray him as a scapegoat which he was not, he caused the death of so many people, and it's good you keep silent until you educate yourself more on this issue. Then you will not be talking nonsense that you don't know, Ma.
