The governors of the 17 states of Southern Nigeria on Monday demanded devolution of powers to states from the federal government.

The governors also reiterated their commitment to the growth of Nigeria.

They spoke through a joint communique issued after they met in Lagos House, Ikeja, Lagos.

The governors met twelve years after their last meeting held in Lagos. The first summit took place in 2001 and the last in 2005.

The communique, read by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos, also stated that the governors reiterated their commitment to true federalism and devolution of powers.

They also stated their commitment to a united, indivisible Nigeria and called for effective linkage of infrastructure in the southern part of the country.

The summit also appointed Mr. Ambode as chairman of the forum and governors Dave Umahi of Ebonyi and Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa as co-chairmen.

Points of interest:
● adjust allocations
● one Nigeria for life
● more items in concurrent legislative list.

The government know the decisions to make which is good for the masses but won't implement it because of their selfish interest.

This is a welcome development. Enough of the intimidation from the North

If only the Southern leaders can set aside their primordial sentiments and proclivities for bickering, stealing, selfishness and the likes, it will augur well for their people

Nigeria as presently constituted is not working. It does not take a genius to realise that we are a failed project.

I endorse the outcome of this 'August Meeting' it is for greater good..

Best news

This is going to be the best news for the week..!

Our impossed unitary style of governance carved by the military, fully adopted by the North has only led to lopsided infrastructures, appointments, over centralized power, dysfunctional and ineffective government systems, corruption unimpeded.

What more, hence the 97% vs 5%, appointments without respect for national character, etc

True fiscal federalism is the way to go for rapid economic growth and for government to be felt even at the grassroots.

Ask the same of governors for local governments and see them raise hell on you.

What is killing this country is corruption and not its systemic structure.

Even if the federal government devolves more power to the states... same problems will recur. Just more money to some fortunate politicians.

Devolve more power to Local Governments. The more closer the government is to the people, the more we can burn their family houses when they don't perform well - cos those LG Chairman and councillors dem are guys we grew up with together (pun intended).

Plus... regional government please... I would prefer each region grows in its own pace. Better competition... breathing space from Northerners too. Thank you!

after devolution of powers what next, would that stop the Governors from stealing.

the governors should clamour for total restructuring which would include change of this nonsense document called constitution. a new constitution which would frown against embezzlement and corruption, a new constitution which would make the Governors or President to be easily impeached when they fail to deliver, a new constitution that would include not only recalling of senators but governors and President, in case the docile state house of assembly or National assembly fail to impeach an erring president.

Yes, corruption but the structure encourages it.

Everybody acknowledges that there's more corruption now than in the sixties when Nigeria operated fiscal federalism. The present structure encourages corruption and nepotism. We have to restructure!

Let us desolve the north-serving centre first. We are losing billions to the elites.

Even if they like, let them hold 100 meetings. Nigeria will never be restructured and power will never be devolved to the states. The core North have more than enough elected officials to make sure that never happens.

Good, unity is good and necessary. But for devolution of power, it will only favour the governors that wants absolute power to perpetuate evil has always seen.
There is no problem with the constitution or structure, the major problem is the people operating the system. The same people will still operate if you restructured or devolute power. Our problem as a people North, south, east and west is not the structure, constitution and systems, these people will always find a way around their greed and power.
Bring the best constitution and structure from the world to Nigeria, it will lose its values when it gets to Nigeria
