No! If Mandela had not loved himself, he would not have had the confidence and strength to pull through. As a matter of fact, he was able to endure 27 years in his own company. Could a person who hates himself do it?

A man who doesn't love himself, cannot love others. Even your Bible tells you to love 'your neighbor as yourself'. This, my dear, is a very wise piece of advice.

Now let us talk about our respective definitions of selfishness. For me selfishness is not to love myself and forget about others, it is about me loving myself so much that my love can spill over onto others. Saying that self-love prevents you from loving others is like saying that making money stops you from sharing it with others. If you are poor, you have not much to share. If you hate yourself, you have no love to give. If you are sad, you cannot give happiness. If you are fearful, you cannot make anyone confident. It's that simple.

Breath taking! Oh my God! I missed you kiss

I send you nothing but love and light kiss

It would be difficult for them to make such a shift, since gender equality is general and nonspecific. The meaning is quite CLEAR - simple English right there: gender equality. You know, feminism started as a REACTION to something - patriarchy. So, even though the very idea is about GENDER EQUALITY, it was viewed through the female prism, so it's very easy for those who disapprove of it to call it a movement by frustrated, bitter, angry females, as long as the word "feminism" remains. Using the same argument when you throw the term, gender equality, in their face would be so stupid and embarrassing that even they would be amazed by their own foolishness. grin

True again, I'm wondering if we leave feminism and migrate to gender equality if they won't find a reason to degrade gender equality so that we will run from that as well.

LOL. The inherent contradiction.
It's just like saying, "I'm not a sexist, but I support patriarchy". grin

you don't hate 'rapists' and their apologists. you hate men naturally, such hate that leads you to condemn all men when one is found guilty of rape.

but if a woman rapes a young boy, it's ok. in fact, the little boy was done a favor because he "he touched big breasts"..

Now we're getting somewhere.

I'm not saying self love is bad, I'm saying too much of it is bad. That my dear is what the OP is about. I even mentioned it here, she loves herself so much to the point of having issues with her boyfriend and not even bothering to even talk things out with him. Like she can't be bothered, she loves herself so much not to give a damn. She hates confrontation. That's what I was trying to point out.

My dear, too much of everything is bad. When one go about screaming about self love, it gets to ones head. Hubris, selfishness and greed comes in.

I love you that's why I replied your mention, now if I love myself too much why should I be bothered about replying your mention?

Hope you get my drift, babe? grin

i believe it makes people become narcissists. As for who taught me this belief, I've seen enough to make me arrive at this belief.

No! If Mandela had not loved himself, he would not have had the confidence and strength to pull through. As a matter of fact, he was able to endure 27 years in his own company. Could a person who hates himself do it?
Nope. The strength to pull through came from what he believed in. From what he was fighting for. Loving himself had nothing to do with it.

Even prisoners on death row endure and enjoy their own company. That's what people in prison do. So don't get it twisted.

A man who doesn't love himself, cannot love others. Even your Bible tells you to love 'your neighbor as yourself'. This, my dear, is a very wise piece of advice.
Love your neighbour as yourself. Not love yourself to the point of being selfish.

If you hate yourself, you have no love to give. If you are sad, you cannot give happiness. If you are fearful, you cannot make anyone confident. It's that simple.
Now I believe our respective definition of 'selfishness' defer. For me I tend to go with how the dictionary define selfishness. Like I once said, don't confuse selflessness with selfishness. I believe that's what you just did.

interesting perspective though
we can all clamour for "liberal feminism",but, the truth is that the society has been stratified and many factor has make it dificult.Feminist or not, the society has absorb the reality that 'women' holds a pivotal role in the modern society, while men also have their own functional role which cannot be underestimated. In mordan days,u can achieve ur goals in as much you have got the guts and resilience irrespective of your gender. But,emotion, happines, self fulfilment is stil deeply rooted from interaction and association with different gender be it a man or a woman, its not a "one side thing".Only if u seize to be more human.Ideology atimes is really difrent from reality, its just a way to measure the proximity of reality in order to serve as a measuring rod.

i'm not lying, bro. that's quoting her exactly by her own words. instead of condemning rape for the evil it stands for she cunningly shifted goalposts by making a comparison of the trauma effect on both male and female victims:

for girls it's heartbreaking.

for boys it's enjoyment because "they touched big breasts".

Oh, cyberspace might not be so real, but all these things still exist to a certain degree. Shame and disgrace exist here, even though it's not real life----that's why some people deactivate after one scandal or the other. Some people exhibit shyness here----that's why they create new monikers when they want to beg or post something they consider embarrassing.

So, who says courage doesn't exist on social media? The comments here affects the FEELINGS of certain people, that's why people get reported to the mods when insults become unbearable. So, even though it's not that real, commending some people for being courageous or, in some cases having a "thick skin" isn't as ridiculous as you're implying.

And even if they don't have those qualities in real life, I suppose the entire point is judging people based on their character HERE. You call people "stupid" on nairaland, don't you? But you make that judgement BASED ON THEIR COMMENT. I don't think you ever consider whether they're stupid in "real life" or not.
I've seen enough here to know most nairalanders don't feel shame.

I really don't want to press this point because the thread might become a breeding ground for trolling.

what these nameless female nairalanders want is domination, not fairness in the treatment of both sexes. if what they preach is equal rights for men and women then let them replace the term "feminism" with "gender equality"...which is not possible.

humans generally are not equal. the dividing path between the rich and the poor, the fortunate and the unfortunate will continue to wax to create a balance, just like light and darkness. it's nature. technically, every individual is independent because we run our race to success alone. at some point, some will overtake others, some will pick up later and some will tire out; it doesn't matter if you have a dick or a pussy. YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN!

the current M.D. of the company i work with is a woman, and i address her with "ma". yesterday, she asked me come to her office to tag and arrange her files alphabetically. she said i MUST be done in 30 minutes; but i finished up in less than 20..

in my own department, my direct senior is a girl. she gives instructions and i do the job clean...no complaints.

merge these two females up against me in a ring and i'd knock them out in ten seconds, but do i need to flex my masculinity at them because i feel they're "weaker"? mbanu!

i have a dick, you have a pussy...naturally, we're supposed to fvck to satisfy each other. but i'm not going to force you if you prefer your d1ldoz (self-loving) over my dick. i can as well look for a nice female goat to screw or masturbate myself to death. it's my dick...it's your pussy.

so it's quite baffling how these arrogant females disturb our peace with their feminism anthem when it's clear nobody is stopping them from achieving what they want to achieve. we're all given equal opportunities but your individual struggle and focus, with a bit of luck, will determine how far you'll climb the ladder.

so y'all better come out clean and tell us you want to dominate us and stop hiding under this "feminism" bullsh1t.

*edited*

if you want to debate/discuss/argue about injustices against women, go to arab countries where women are forced to look like masquerades or they'd be dealt with, according to the laws of shariah..

'Feminism' should rather be replaced with 'Humanism' instead of 'Gender Equality.' That one is DoA since we recognize that there are marked differences between the sexes. Humanism, on the other hand, focuses on the one similarity that really matters when discussing fundamental rights. And since the essence of Feminism is to acknowledge the full humanness of women by extending all fundamental human rights (that are available to men) to women as well, humanism just makes the most sense.

As you've pointed out, our inequalities as human beings go far beyond gender. There's race, height, weight, complexion, IQ, and all that. But we don't apportion rights to people by considering any of these differences; even when certain physical attributes can have a huge bearing on the persons performance. In the end, what matters is that we are all human beings. And as human beings, we should have human rights. Not men's rights and women's rights. That's really all there is to equal rights and gender equality.

I like what you said about letting nature take its course. But the status quo does not do that. Male privilege is like federal character or affirmative action - hugely flawed. It does not allow people achieve based on the merit of their abilities. And do men really need a leg-up in that sense? Male excellence cannot be presumed, it has to be tested and proven just like female capabilities should be. Human beings should be born with equal value to society; they should enjoy opportunities available to them without any unnatural discrimination; and they should establish their ultimate relevance based on their individual abilities. It's not always about sparring in a ring, sometimes, the battles are mental.

You imply that feminism has no place in Nigeria. I disagree. People talk about all kinds of flavours of feminism: socialist, radical, liberal, and even (I heard today) depressed feminism. I consider this nonsense. It's an unnecessary multiplication of related dogmas that only ends up creating confusion and stifling the movement. I believe that feminism is organic; it grows out of the soil. It's reactionary just like any other movement that pushes back oppression. If women aren't oppressed, they won't react to oppression (Newton's third law). And the kind of reactions will differ across the globe. Feminism cultured by Nigerian misogyny is different from feminism cultured by Arab, or American misogyny. The manifestos are drawn up accordingly. But at the root of it all is that women want to thrive to their full potential in an environment without unjust influence. And in our own context, unjust influence would include (but is not limited to) things like shaming (or stigmatizing) women for some of their choices even when these choices are perfectly legal; and creating double standards of judgement for moral conduct. These things aren't natural, they're impositions.

Very elaborate, can you share the title of the text, I will like to read it.

AHCB:
I've seen enough here to know most nairalanders don't feel shame.

I really don't want to press this point because the thread might become a breeding ground for trolling.
Most nairalanders? How can you tell that much? Well, you're talking about YOUR observation, how far YOU've seen. Well, I've also observed that MANY people here feel shame. And many are courageous too---my observation.

I wouldn't want to press it either.
