BJ, how much will it cost me in total to apply for a first degree in the science field in any state in the USA (school fees, house rent and visa processing fees inclusive)

Check the USA student thread. it varies

Good thread and nice guesture! Blowjobs I wish you all the very best, but for others wishing to come here by all means, I know naija is hard and all that, but atleast try to come in with a student visa route if you really want to have a soft landing and enjoy your American dream! Tuition can be waived if you got in with teaching or graduate assistantship or scholarship of some kinds. American schools do grant assistantship to good students. Coming in with b1/b2 for a hustler is really harsh. You can’t even open a bank account or get credit cards, drivers license/SSN card/StateID, car loans and all sort of things which are accessible to student visa holders. Secondly, you can only do what we call “under the table” jobs to pay your bills. Don’t expect anyone to accommodate you for free. Nah, that don’t happen here. Blowjobs is just one out of million kind of lucky. I have been here as a student for a while and seeing how Nigerians with b1/b2 struggle to survive is not fun. Whatever anyone tells you is all sugarcoating. You will STRUGGLE for real! The class of visa you came in through will determine your standing.
#Omoluabi

Sir, i have said it several times on this thread. However, you know our Naija people. So, make we still advise them.

Moreover, e go hard true true. I still believe how hard it is cannot be compared to how hard naija be

Case 1.. I have a friend named Mr A. Mr A inturn has a friend named Mr B but i havent heard of Mr B before. So I met Mr B when I was in Nigeria planning to come here last year..

Mr A told me on phone that Mr B is working in one country in the middle east and after the whole deduction of bills, he is only left with 50k savings for a whole month after spending 13hrs at work. He said he would love me to put him through some usa visa application process which I did. He left the middle east and came back to Nigeria

I left Nigeria and Mr B was always in contact with me staying very humble to the extent he can even travel to abuja from lagos IF i say i need a cup of water in abuja lol..

Skipping all stories, He got Visa and came to the state. My friend said Mr B should stay with me pending the time he will get him and i have friends(students) living in the same apartment with me. I agreed! I used my card to pay for his NYC Airporter, paid for his bus to my place, bought sim card for him so that he can have access to sim card immediately he arrives and he got to my place and introduced him to my flatmates.I didnt collect any house rent from him, money for bills nothing since he will be with me for the main time.

Sincerely, Up to now, this guy is very nice to me but then an opportunity came and i quickly fixed him up. His work is very similar to that of OP and he gets paid regularly. when he started getting dollars and saw the difference btw US and where he worked in Middle east, Pride started coming in.

Summary, he misbehaved to all the other guys in the house, always bullshitting them saying all sort of things. FYI, I already moved out of the house and the guys always call me saying they regretted allowing him into the house.

Case 2. I and my friends were just flexing on a sunday evening when a call came through from Nigeria saying there is this guy stranded in New York that needs a place to stay and he has been wandering the streets for two weeks. my response was "let him go back home since he has nothing to do here" and ended the call. so another call came in to my friend's phone and it was the guy's mom crying on phone that he is their only hope blah blah that he cant afford to come back home. I talked to others once again to let us at least accommodate this guy since he is homeless, my friend kicked against it and we even almost fought. i stood for the guy that i will be responsible for anything he do in the house. so we paid for his bus ticket and came in. He was also humble saying "sir sir sir etc" but then after fixing him up, he started showing his true colour too..

So I planned for my wedding and told everybody that "gas and hotel" for each person should be arround $90 each which they all agree but the guy was reluctant which i noticed and i told him nicely that the wedding is just 3hrs and it is not compulsory he comes if it is not convenient. so one of my friend told him it will be unfair if he didnt go which he agreed to come.

on the wedding day, he was teased by others that the gate fee will be $25 for each person and he said and I quote " What kind of rubbish is this?I dont spend my money anyhow and He didnt tell me i will pay any fee when i get there infact I regret going/coming to this wedding ". That was his exact word.

When they arrived, they saw a African restaurant and decided to go in there to eat. A plate was sold for $10 and he refused to it saying $10 is too much for African food. during the wedding, when it was time for refreshment, he served himself and believe me, he put the largest food on his plate and ate it all. I told my wife about the development and weeks after my wife visited her friend and during their conversation, her friend said "there was this guy that served himself a lot of food that 3 people could have eaten" my wife was shocked and smiled saying she didnt notice anything.

In short after the whole wedding party, I told him infront of others that I heard what he said about me and I wasn't offended, its just that one good turn deserves another. He didn't say anything or apologized that night. It was one of the guys that told him when they were about to sleep that I was the one that recommended him and guaranteed his stay in the house. It was then he realized he needed to apologize. Had it been he was told nothing, he wouldnt have said anyting.

Other Cases : Is it the guy that was so humbled when he got here and later crossed to Canada to do asylum after helping him financially and "bullshit" all of us all.. there are soooooooooooooo many stories to tell but then All is well.

With all I have seen, I have just decided to keep to myself and stay away from Nigerians, I will assume all are the same until proven otherwise(I am sorry to say that).

CC BlowJobs

honestly, a lot of times. Naija people dey fall hand. Once they think there is nothing useful you can do for them, their true color go come out

You are right on your post, but the bolded one, it depends on the categories of Nigerians you are hanging with. There are lots of Nigerians actually living big and fine here. If you have met graduate students on scholarship who are getting paid while schooling and the ones that graduated and working and maybe the Nigerians that are citizens and finished school Mostly in medicine and IT fields. They are earning big. Apart from those categories, you are right especially if they came in thru b1/b2, the struggle will be tough. You can’t even rent a house on your name. You’ll have to start watching your back the moment your visa expires. We see it here all the time

This is very true. There are tons of Nigerians working professionally here and doing well. As an IT person that works downtown Chicago, you'll be surprised how many Nigerians (Africans in general, but mostly Naija) I run into downtown or on the train during my commute downtown...all working professionally.

lionlee216:
Some people's American Dream is to work menial Job and be making small money BUT my own american dream is "get good education in US and get good paying jobs and work professionally like Bossman smiley

A good advice from Goldenboy007. I once spoke to him on phone and he is a very nice man and took his time to explain stuffs to me, wherever you are, God Bless you. I am taking all your advice to heart

Guys, listen to the seniors here. Don't settle for Menial jobs. Menial jobs are what you do to get on your feet. Once everything "clicked" for you, try and get your professionalism on track. A lot of Naija people dey do well for themselves here, don't be left behind.
Yes, working menial jobs will put money in your pocket and few savings but how many years can your body take working crazy hours?. If i work the hours i'm working now when i have kids, it means i won't even see my kids at all.

Living in America don't automatically mean you're rich, don't let the exchange rate fool you (Maybe in Naija standard, you get moni). Lets face the fact, a lot of us in Life won't be rich

However, America (and other western Nations) gives us the benefits of living comfortably and seeing the result of our hard works. A lot of Nigerians wants to be comfortable and worry-free: good road and schools, electricity, water, good hospitals, job security, nice car, a house, raise a family. All these things are not easily attainable in Naija. I do believe they form the basis of why Nigerians migrate in doves.

So if you're thinking you wanna migrate so you can be rich. Sorry to burst your bubble, you probably will not be rich. but your standard of living will improve drastically.

Keep in mind being "rich" is relative. 2000$ to some is "chicken change" while the same amount to some people is "jackpot"

Maths and Chemistry are core science subjects. if you are core sciences, you'll need at least credits in those two. I will encourage you to take the exam again. give it your best. you'll definitely smile at the end of it all. All the best brother.

Hey bro, I was wondering if you have any insight or cases where a medical student with the j1 status under the 2 year home requirement was able to remove the waiver through marriage to a US citizen?
What does it involve? Is it doable? Is it even worth considering? I really need your advise please

Marriage to a USC does not removr the waiver. You still hsve to apply. The two tricks are

1) if yiu did not receive funding form US govt or any US organizations, Nigerian govt or organizations
2) Apply for waiver early, like ASAP.
3) Make sure Nigerian embassy sends the No objection letter ASAP.

With good waec result, you should write SAT/TOEFL exams which are not that difficult compared to GRE (for masters/phd applicants). If you do good with SAT, you have 95% of getting a full ride scholarship. The only budget you would need is flight ticket and the money to travel with. SAT shouldn’t be that cost about 60k naira or so.

How body TheManOfTheYear. See my responses below...

1. Came to the US a long time on Student visa. Student visa was easy back then. Na long time ago. Even the Naira had significant value compared to the US $ back then. Parents paid for all 6 years (BS and Masters) of college.
2. I studied computer science/Programming in college.
3. Got a job with a major Bank as a software developer through my school's placement office (during my last semester). Joined the company as soon as I finished. The company was in a different state, so they paid for flying me in for in-office interview, relocation, etc.
4. IT itself is a very broad word. It encompasses software development, Database Management, Networking, etc. As mentioned, I studied computer programming. So, I can only give advice about that. Even if you do not go to college for a CS degree. At a minimum you should have a mastery of software development/programming, using one of the common languages such as Java, C, C++, etc.

I want to avoid derailing this thread with technical jargon. So, please PM me if you have any specific questions relating to software development in general. Or you can search the programming forum here.
