I was thinking of the bloodless and very peaceful military intervention in Zimbabwe. What if it had gone awry? The collective weariness of the good people of Zimbabwe of Mugabe's Methuselah-esque misrule worked in their favour, but it could have easily gone south, like it did for our Nigerian brethren during the era of military intervention.

Coups are an integral part of Nigerian history and the following is a list of those who were accused by the government of plotting one coup or the other and what happened to them.

EXECUTED ON THE 11TH OF MARCH 1976

It must have been around 2am that the explosion woke me up. In fact, I actually didn't hear it. I woke up and I knew that something woke me up, but I didn't know what and then I heard that terrible sound before I could move.

Those who ruled the nation were executed in their numbers, as you can see from the names and photos.
They realized too late that gambari slavery will take them nowhere.

Ishilove, change this name
Lieutenant Mike Fyorshe

EXECUTED IN JANUARY 1986
Lieutenant Colonel Aker Mike Iyorshe- Benue

He was one of the most brilliant military officers Nigeria ever produced.

Major Daniel Bamidele – ONDO
The case of Bamidele is just pathetic. Bamidele knew of the 1983 coup to overthrow Shagari and reported to his GOC, General Muhammadu Buhari, he was promptly put in jail and was released only after the coup, to his chagrin his GOC to whom he had reported a coup in the plans, was made head of state.

Again, apparently, he got wind of the Vatsa plan and this time, he locked up and did not say anything.

Sad, sad, sad cry

That "thing" blew down the wall of Ikoyi Cemetery. It also destroyed a Peugeot J5 bus and several of them flattened a building.

Several smaller things made a hole in the wall of my friend's office (right where she usually sat) and killed several people.

Another "rapidly speaking thing" wreaked havoc on Ribadu Road later in the evening.

In fact, it was like I was in the middle of a triangle of them (an Air Force officer joked that they were speaking to themselves).

What a waste! Most of these guys were brilliant officers and other rank (who were probably innocent). Babangida wasted more lives than any other person - he didn't even spare his close friend, the poet Mamman Vatsa, believed to have been framed up to get rid of him. An Idoma guy called Ben Ekele, then reputed to be one of the best Mig fighter jet pilots in Africa, was brutally silenced forever by Babangida in one of his phantom coups. What a needless coldhearted waste of lives! Those who oppose the death penalty have a point anyday.
