Ethically, it's rude not to accept. As long as she did not ask for it.. I don't see anything bad here

Sorry Op, anything at this point can be for your interview so for me you ignore it.. Though in Human Capital management which i did in my OND we stated types of interview which we have meal interview. But if this is not meal interview you can eat but how will you know this is meal interview.. To me dont eat. After all how many hours will you spend there? Hunger no go kill you. When u get the job u can eat as much.

Yes if hungry catches the applicant, and most especially if there's no food at home
Re: Is It Wrong For This Young Lady To Have Accepted Lunch Before Being Interviewed? by kevoh(m): 7:51am On Feb 01, 2018
If you eat the food offered they will say it's a test and use that to disqualify you.

If you refuse to eat, they will still say it's a test to know how you can get a customer.

You don't have to be right, Nigerian HR for the most part are looking for how to disqualify a candidate and not how to find the best candidate.

Sorry to say this but she should have been more focused. She did not go there to eat food. It was an interview and not a lunch invitation.

The corporate world can be harsh but that's the way it is.

A young lady was invited to an interview for an entry level role. She arrived at the venue exactly 10minutes before the scheduled time and was asked to stay at the waiting room.

40 minutes later, a young man worked into the waiting room and apologised to her for the delay. He explained to her that the head of HR is trying to resolved an issue with an irate customer but will be with her shortly.

An hour 30mins later, the young man came back to apologize for further delay. This time around asked her if he could ger her lunch. Apparently this young lady was hungry and could no longer bare it. She accepted and a sumptuous meal was served.

She ate to her satisfaction but in the process got her white shirt stained with oil.

Not long after she finished her meal, the head of HR sent for her and immediately the interview began. The first question she was asked was "What happened to your shirt" She explained and the interview continued. At the end of the interview, she was told the usual "we will get back to you". When she got home, she narrated her experience to an HR friend.

Her friend told her it was wrong to have accepted the lunch as it could be used against her during decision making.

Do you agree with the HR friend?

All these are mere excuses , any company can use any criteria they deem fit when it comes to recruiting workers, any company is as good as its workforce so don't blame them if they aim for the best.

Well said. Dont mind those HR peeps, like say dem over sabi. I tell u, if what u are bringing to the table is priceless even if u go in rags and eat like a fool they will still take the person. Don't mind those HR peeps. Any company that doesn't want to take u will not take u

Africans and mediocrity and inferiority complex ...smh, what brought in imitating 'oyinbo people '? if imitating oyinbo people will yield better results then why go for less? Do you even have any idea of what preparation means? So not eating for less than 3hours will kill you? hahahhahahhahahh.... you guys are funny Abeg, with mindsets like this, little wonder this country is not not going anywhere.
. You just judged yourself. Tell me what preparation is. I am not surprised if you are one of them that put graduate through written test and 3 oral interviews and the only time you see them smile at the applicant is when they want to tell you that your salary is #30,000 and you will work from Monday to Saturday. Go to good companies if they do all these nonsense. They give you time not those idiots that will send you interview message by 7pm for interview the next day by 8am at lekki when they see Iyana ipaja in your address. I have attended interview with 2 oil firms they serve breakfast and pay me. Ask anybody that have attended interview with Total and Saipem like 5 years back. HR people like you that graduate with 3rd class and was manipulated to be in position will be looking for first class and second class upper with 25years of age and 3yrs experience for a job of 30k.

Sometimes all these methods of testing potential employees has flaws. Whats testing the candidate patience with food? What if she pretended not hungry and appeared focus and discipline but yet she is not the best fit for the job?

Bro, I am equally perplexed like you when I read the story.

For crying out loud, why would a recruiter judge a candidate based on her starving stomach knowing that they were the one that caused it by delaying her.

Some organisation judgement to access potential employees is horrible.

As for me, I totally disagree with her HR friend

Madam, this method to test her competence is archaic and seriously flawed. She might pretend and eventually collapsed during the interview session. On whose account would that read for. She didn't do anything wrong

In all my interviews with the upstream oil and gas companies, buffet was always part of the bargain and i will assume it's part of the assessment only to the extent they want to know how cultured you are and not to test my focus on the job. It will be arbitrary and unreasonable to remain hungry when I have food and the time to eat it. I have, on my own, requested for coffee a number of times in the course of an interview and it has never been used against me.

I read a lot of comments here and I laugh.
The HR erred by keeping the applicant beyond the scheduled time. Even within the scheduled time it's the responsibility of the HR to ensure applicants are made comfortable during interviews refreshment inclusive.

NB to all applicants

If a recruiter keeps you beyond schedule time ask for refreshment it's your right. Don't attend an interview with a" beggarly " mind set. You are needed

Yes bro, beyond the buffet i ate at Shell, NLNG, chevron and one other i can't remember now, they picked my bill for the flight as I had flown from Lagos. It is all these mushroom roadside companies that come up with all these sinister unilateral tests that are unknown to standard human capital best practise. A potential employee is not a beggar, he is bringing his services which will be paid for, so he also has rights ab initio

Lemme make a few points here;

First, she wasn't tested with the food besides she was offered lunch she didn't request for it.

Second,She should have told the personel that asked her if she wanted lunch, that she wanted snacks. Why would a job seeker be eating oily food when she has an interview before her, that could make her too heavy or unfit for the interview.

Finally, there is nothing bad accepting to eat if offered since they wasted her time for 3 hours, it's only normal to offer her lunch, I have been to quite a few interviews and they did offer us snacks not food, so she should have requested the personel buy her snacks instead of food.
Since most HR personnel interviewers access your dressing based on the Job,she was simply Disqualified because of the stain not for accepting food.

Yes na. Even if you miss the job, you can't miss the food also thereby achieving nothing after spending money on transport to the venue.

The only mistake she made was soiling her clothes.

Some major recruitments are done over lunch/dinner.

When you know your stuff and can prove it, all those things like wether you eat or not don't really matter.
