Immunization Schedule in Nigeria: The Full Course

A child is considered vaccinated if he/she has received a vaccine against tuberculosis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio-vaccine (at least 3 doses) and measles vaccine (1 dose). All of these vaccines should be received during the first year of the baby’s life, over five visits to the doctor, including those doses that were delivered at birth.

Vaccinations needed at birth are BCG, HBV-1, and OPV-0. They are given to the babies right after they are is born in the hospital. If a woman gives birth at home, she should still go to the local hospital and vaccinate her child.

BCG – this vaccine’s name stands for Bacillus Calmette Guerin. It is a compulsory immunization that prevents the baby from tuberculosis. This vaccine is received on the left arm. Usually, it will leave a small scar, which will be noticeable for the child's entire life. The baby received about 0,05 ml of the vaccine. Tuberculosis is a severe infectious illness which can lead to the fatal outcome without proper treatment. The usual symptoms of it are fever, sweating at night, weight loss, and coughing up blood.

HBV-1 – this is a vaccine against Hepatitis B virus. This immunization measure is given to a baby on the thigh, in the dose of 0,5 ml. It is the first dose out of three. Two next doses of HBV-1 will be given to the child at the age of 6 and 14 weeks. Hepatitis B is a dangerous illness which can affect the liver and lead to serious damage or even cancer. The symptoms of hepatitis B are muscle pain, jaundice, vomiting, diarrhea, and tiredness. Sometimes the symptoms do not show up explicitly.

OPV-0 – this vaccine helps against polio virus. It is given by mouth, in two or three drops. OPV-0 should be given in four doses, and while the first one is given to the baby right after birth, the next ones will be at the age of 6, 10 and 14 weeks.

Polio is a special virus infection which affects the nervous system and might lead to paralysis. Usually, a person gets polio through consumption of water or food which contains the virus, or direct contact with body fluids of an infected person.

The necessary vaccinations at the age of 6 weeks are DPT, HBV-2, and OPV-1.

DPT stands for diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus vaccine. These three vaccines are combined together and given on the thigh in the dose of 0,5 ml.
Diphtheria is a severe illness that can damage the heart and nervous system, and in some cases, it even leads to the fatal outcome. It usually shows up as a thick covering at the back of the throat, which is a primary symptom of the disease and can lead to chills, fever, and sore throat.

Tetanus is a special kind of illness that is possible to catch through germs that get into the body through the open wounds and cuts. It can lead to painful spasms and breathing issues.

Pertussis is an illness which leads to seizures, brain damage, and pneumonia. It causes coughing spells which last for about a week.

At the age of 10 weeks, the child needs DPT-2, HBV-2, and OPV-2. They are all the next doses of the vaccines that were mentioned before.

At 14 weeks, the baby is given the following vaccines: DPT-3, HBV-3, and OPV-3.

The next vaccination has to take place when the baby is 9 months old. The little one has to get the following vaccines:

Yellow fever vaccine – this one is given to the baby at the right arm in the dose of 0,5 ml. It protects the baby from the infectious disease called yellow fever, which usually is common in Africa, especially its tropical and subtropical areas. The symptoms of yellow fever are a headache, vomiting, appetite loss, and muscle pain. Sometimes you can bleed from the nose, mouth, and eyes. This illness is usually transmitted by mosquito bite.

Measles vaccine – like the yellow fever, it is given on the right arm in 0,5 ml dose. This immunization measure will protect your child from measles. It is a very viral infection and one of the primary reasons why children in Nigeria die. Usually, the person who struggles from measles has a high temperature, sore eyes, running nose, little white spots in the mouth, and an allergic rash all over the body.

Vitamin A – this is not exactly a vaccine, but this vitamin is given to a child as a supplement to boost his/her resistance to infections.

To sum up, the primary vaccines that the baby in Nigeria needs from birth to the age of 9 months are:
BCG
OPV
HBV
DPT
Yellow fever
Measles

If you have any questions about the other vaccines, you should clarify them with your medical care provider. Generally, these listed vaccines are the primary ones that are compulsory during immunization schedule for infants in Nigeria. Take care of your baby!

Also, wen does postpartum bleeding stops? I will be 4weeks pp tmrw but d red blood stopped after 2weeks, since then I've been seeing some creamy discharge everytime I change my pad........Is dis normal?
I think the postpartum bleeding ie lochia depends on your body system. I'm also still on it and it's past 3 weeks already. since its not red blood I feel its nothing serious.

My Birth Story:

(I've been typing this since Wednesday.. God help me, motherhood is EASY oh, if you understand me). And it's sweet actually.

My EDD was February 28, however I had an increasing blood pressure since the beginning of February, and at my last antenatal on Saturday on February 17th, BP had even gone much higher and my ob-gyn advised I come in for labour induction on the 19th of February with my load as its unwise to continue.

I prayed to God as usual to grant me a quick supernatural birth like the Hebrew women.

On Monday evening, I went to hospital with my hubby's cousin to assist me with my load.

Induction process started at 11.30 pm. I was taken to labour room and The doc poked into my vagina with different kind of medical instruments which I didn't see but feel because I closed my eye from the discomfort. He inserted a small rubber ball which had a long rubber thin rod attached to it. The rod was plastered to my thighs, while the ball (like the size of a garden egg) was left inside me at the entrance of my cervix. Then I was asked to go back to my room. I think that's called the catheter.

About an hour after, I stood up to drink water, and then the ball dropped out of me with a pop sound (meaning I'm at least 3cm gone. Almost immediately, I felt the first Labour pain, at about 12.30am. And it was EXTREMELY painful. I grind my teeth and used my fist to hit on the wall furiously, while also snapping my fingers. I thought that was the highest magnitude of pain I would be feeling throughout the delivery. I didn't know that is what I would eventually call a child's play.

The contractions were coming pretty fast. At first I was able to sleep in between, later I gave up on sleep. From 30 minutes interval to about 5 minutes interval all in less than 4 hours. The pain got worse than I imagined any human could go through. At every contraction, I kept shouting Jesus Jesus Jesus..but the pain only increased than the previous.

The nurses were also coming to check on me periodically, and to check how far dilated my cervix was. I very much hated this finger invasion.

At 4.30am, I also felt the strong urge to poo, I shouted for a nurse, she checked again and said I'm 8cm gone, and encouraged me that I'm doing well and fast, but I mustn't poo, that is just my baby's head on my rectum, and I'm not fully dilated. In my mind, I said hay god which kain wahala be this? With this level of contraction/pain? However, she and a second nurse decided to wheel me to the labour room, as she sensed I was coming really close. As soon as they left me there, the pain became times one hundred thousand.

It felt like the Hebrew women had decided to abandon me at this point. Most of all I just wanted to push and the contractions were like just 10 seconds apart or less. I shouted for a nurse again, she said I'm still 8cm. In between shouts and finger snapping, I told her I'm going to push that I didn't care any more. Urge to push was stronger than I ever imagined in this life. She urged me to be patient and continue to do the breathing exercise with my mouth (which was quite helpful, but not anymore).

Afterwards, the second nurse went to call the doctor, the one who did the induction. He put his hand inside me and said I'm 9cm and I'm almost there. While he was talking, with his hand still inside me, I shouted that I wanted to push ooohhh.. With his hand still there, he said "OK go ahead and push". I started pushing with all my might and power. I thought I could give the strong Anthony Joshua a run for his money, but The nurse said "now that its time to push, you're just shouting, you're not pushing". She said the pushing I'm doing is from my chest, that I should instead push like I wanted to poo a big hard shit. Doctor also said look at your navel and then push, and that's what helped me. I looked at my navel and pushed again and I felt my baby's head out of me, I didn't even feel the body. Immediately she was placed on my chest, I just started crying saying 'thank you Jesus'. It was indeed an experience. The pain is out of this world..but the result is worth it. My husband came into the labour room while the placenta was delivered. I was stitched afterwards. I didn't even feel I was cut. I also had a tear (imagine). And my baby isn't even big - 3.1kg.

The doctors and nurse kept saying I'm very strong. Even told my husband the same thing when he entered. I kept wondering, strong how? Maybe cos I wasn't screaming the hospital down.

Post delivery:

I was wheeled to my room with my baby. The bleeding was crazy. After my husband left for work, I stood up to pee and I fell down out of an extreme dizzyness and weakness. Fortunately, a nurse came in with other nurses and helped me up, asking me to rest that's its still early to be moving about. I told them I wanted to pee. They guided me to pee but I couldn't pee on my own, a catheter was later inserted into me and I was assisted to pee (I was scared I may never be able to pee on my own again - but it was just that time actually. I can pee on my own now). Bleeding became crazy, it was pouring like tap water. Within just two hours after delivery, I had almost exhausted two ladysept pad. It became an emergency and I was wheeled back to labour room. That was another terrible experience for me. I cried my eyes out, begged the doctor (a woman this time, and very kind) to give me painkiller injection, I just didn't want to go through another bout of pain especially as my vagina is still sore and tender from delivery and from stitching too. She sympathised with me but told me she won't give me, because she didn't know where I was bleeding from, as this was obviously not lochia. About 4 doctors were there, with 5 nurses making it all the more scary for me.

She poked and poked, inserted and removed. My people I saw heaven several times. I cried and cried and tried to suppress my scream by stuffing cloth into my mouth. She eventually found where I was bleeding from and started stitching after giving me pain relief injection which didn't really help me in any way. I endured every single bit of pain... Damnnn

Finally the bleeding reduced and I was kept for two more hours in the labour room for monitoring to be sure it is really done and my uterus was well contracted back, and I'm bleeding only lochia before I was wheeled back to my room where my mum and MIL had been waiting frantically. (they had been there before I left and they knew I was bleeding heavily) Everything is fine now and I'm okay.

Story is so long abi? I like little details sometimes. Anyway, the summary is that God blessed me with a beautiful bouncing baby girl!
