Buhari Rejects Electoral Act Amendment by CEOconcord(m): 11:39am On Mar 13, 2018 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has rejected the amendment to the Electoral Act, which intended to change the country's elections sequence. The president, it was gathered, gave three reasons for withholding assent to the bill, which was passed by both chambers of the National Assembly. Sources said that the president has yesterday communicated his decision to the federal legislature in two separate letters addressed to the Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara. The two presiding officers are expected to read the letters to their colleagues at plenary between today and Thursday. Following the passage of the bill by the National Assembly, several civil society organizations (CSOs), senior lawyers and other notable Nigerians kicked against it, calling on the president not to assent to it. The National Assembly, for the first time, might be left with no other choice than to override PMB on this. I hope it will further strengthen our democracy 170 Likes 5 Shares |

Buhari should have let it be so that himself & NASS members can all prove their mettle that their respective elections were really based on popular opinion. 79 Likes 5 Shares |

Somebody should interpret the bill to him with a language he will understand. Anything outside that, buhari will keep rejecting bills. 75 Likes 2 Shares |

Good! Let the senate exercise their constitutional powers and veto the bill by a majority vote. We the citizens are solidly behind the legislative arm of government to implement policies that are favourable to the masses not the executive. Enough is Enough! After they test run this for INEC they should gear up for the peace Corp bill. 117 Likes 9 Shares |

At the inception of this our democracy in ,1999 elections started from bottom up I.e from LG to presidency but in 2003 obasanjo made governorship and presidential elections to be on same day, in 2007 obasanjo further change the sequence by making presidential election first, same happen in 2011 and 2015. Certainly manipulation of elections starts from its date and sequence, this may also be out of lack of trust on each other, personally I want us to revert to how it was in 1999 but largely let's see if the national Assembly will override the president. Democracy at work 23 Likes 2 Shares |

cinoedhunter:I think you're the one that doesn't. The President has every right to reject a bill he doesn't agree with. Its left to the National Assembly to decide to override it by voting. 19 Likes 3 Shares |

Selfishness everywhere. How NASS thought the order of elections to be a high priority bill for Nigerians amazes me. Their N13.5 million illegal monthly bounty is chilling in their homes, the Peace Corp bill they passed we're hearing they collected bribes and were promised job slots to pass it, and all recent bad thing happening in Nigeria they keep quiet. Only to be bothered about whose election comes first. The rejection of this bill is good, na only mumu dey assent everything wey dem give am. Let people vote any candidate they choose, any day. The order didn't stop GEJ from losing. 18 Likes 1 Share |

I still don't get it. If the "I" in INEC stands for independent, then why is both the executive and legislative arm of Govt interfering in a timetable that ought to be schedule by INEC? 7 Likes

Re: Buhari Rejects Electoral Act Amendment by jeronimo(m): 2:23pm On Mar 13, 2018 |
It is clearly obvious that the major change in the act will not favour the executive because it will mean less influence on who assumes leadership of the 2 legislative arms. If our democracy is to advance then this bill is a huge step towards that direction ... .... But we know it will never happen because the executive wants to have leverage over elections into the national assemblies and subsequently who becomes speaker and senate president 3 Likes
