Benefits of Using Aeration Pumps

Why Your Pond Needs An Air Pump?

The One Accessory You Should Buy. If you’re not using an air pump on your pond, you probably don’t realize what a big risk you are taking and benefits you are missing.

It’s amazing how many fish farmers up to this day have yet to discover the benefits of an air pump.
Pond Aeration “Aeration” in one word, sums up the reason why your pond needs an air pump.
Pond aeration is as essential to ponds as air, particularly oxygen, is essential for us to live.

In lakes and ponds, not only fish are dependent on dissolved oxygen (DO) supply in the water. Many other organisms in the water also depend on it to function well and survive.
A shortage of oxygen opens a Pandora’s Box of problems to your pond’s water quality and clarity, which can rapidly escalate to fish deaths sooner than you expect.
So unless you are willing to take the risk of suffering the consequences from poor pond aeration, a pond air pump is a must.

Don’t Ponds Get Naturally Aerated?

Ponds get naturally aerated, but not adequately. Unlike mountain streams or raging rivers that have higher DO levels, the comparatively still waters in ponds don’t get additional aeration benefit from energised water movement.
In addition, air contains only about 20% oxygen. So even if oxygen diffused from the atmosphere dissolves passively into the water, the amount is far too low to be sufficient.
To make matters even worse, several factors further decrease the level of DO in the water.

Some of them are:
Rising temperature – the demand for oxygen rises as temperature goes up due to increased metabolic rates of fish and other aquatic life.

Fish population and size – the more fish you have in the pond, and the bigger they are, the more oxygen is used up.

Decomposing organic matter – fish and animal wastes, fertiliser run-offs dead leaves, etc make up organic matter in the pond that requires a lot of oxygen to decompose.

Submerged plants and algae – these take in oxygen in the night, which contributes to the drop of oxygen levels after sun down.

Oxygen consuming bacteria – oxygen is required by aerobic bacteria in order to efficiently breakdown nutrients and toxic substances, like ammonia.
The more nutrients and organic wastes are in the water, the more oxygen is consumed by these bacteria.

Presence of other water solutes and use of treatment products reduce DO.

Given these facts, it’s just logical to conclude that ponds need additional help to keep topping-up their exhausted dissolved oxygen supplies.

However, some unconvinced pond owners argue that their ponds have been problem-free even without using pond aerators.

Maybe so, but as your pond gets older, more organic sediments accumulate, fish get bigger and aerobic bacteria multiply.

Increased demand of oxygen soon takes a serious toll on your water’s oxygen levels and it is just a matter of time before problems surface up.

Why Air Pumps and Not Any Other Pond Aerators:

There are different sorts of pond aerators available to address pond aeration. However, tests show that pond air pumps are most efficient in diffusing sufficient oxygen throughout the body of water and not only on the surface.
Because pond air pumps rely on air movement to oxygenate, the rate of oxygen diffused is relatively higher than other pond aerators that rely on water movement, like waterfalls and venturis.

So with efficient pond or lake aerators, you can be certain to get the following benefits:

Prevention of fish death due to oxygen depletion.

Keep useful aerobic bacteria active.

Promote the break-down of toxic substances in the water, like ammonia and nitrite.

Stop the release of toxic gases due to lack of oxygen.

Avoid rotten egg smell coming out of your pond caused by production of toxic gases.

Inhibit the growth of unsightly algae.

Help maintain clear water.

Raised oxygen levels in filters resulting to improved filter performance. Mainly for recirculatory systems.

Healthier Fish.

Will Any Type of Air Pump Do?

Not any kind of pond air pump will guarantee you the above benefits. To get the most out of a pond air pump, it is extremely important to choose the right size and quality. To find out what size of air pump will be efficient enough for your pond, calculate how many litres your pond has and calculate the size of air pump needed.

In terms of quality, just like you can’t expect the perks of a Rolls Royce from a Kia, so you can’t expect to gain equal advantages from different types of air pumps. If the “Rolls Royce” of air pumps at a reasonable price is what you want, then Resun Air Pumps are the best pond aerators for you.

These are “THE” top of the line pond air pumps used for many years in fish ponds and earthen ponds for their high performance, reliability, energy efficiency and ultra silent operation.

This air pump comes complete with additional Accessories added by us to make Installation hassle free and easily outperforms conventional air pumps.

Regardless of its size, a pond should not be without an efficient air pump.

FEEDING YOUR FISH

You know feeding takes 70% of the total cost and there are no cut corners in feeding your fish..I tell farmers that "What you give to them that's what they will become" and that's a fact.. I have seen farmers that give their fishes Eba and the likes for them to gain weight, and its no surprise to me when they sell at a loss..

As long as you have right fish (like shooteers) and u sort and don't over stock my brother you can go ahead and feed them very well.. Let me tell u one deep truth when u stock the right fish(shooters) they can even eat less and yet grow bigger..

Now there are all sort of feeds available in the market from coppens, durante, multifeed, zeigler, aqua feed, ranan, vital feed etc.. When I started back then I was using coppens and there was a time I even bought a fake of it (coppens) but for some time now I have been using zeigler and I must say that I prefer zeigler to coppens.. I know most farmers will be raising eyebrow now but that's a pure fact.. Infact I had a client that sells vale viva feed back then the company did an experiment of coppens, zeigler, multi feed and durante, she told me that ziegler came out top,but I wasn't suprised because I had done my own finding too.. I find zeigler to be the best feed after using it.

Please guys I need you to recommend me the best feeds. I am presently feeding my fishes with Durante(Skretting), but it's very expensive compare to others. Is there any feed that is as nutritional as Skretting and not expensive as it?.

There are some cheap feed in the market, like Crown, top Vital etc.. depending on the age of your fish i will advice you take formulation of feed as your priority to make profit.

My question to u sir is.. using blue crown feed and using formulated feed,Which will give you the best result
Note: formulated feed needs a lot of experience to meet all the requirements of a fish diet plus the wahala of the machines u need to make the feed

Pls sir how much will it cost to produce a formulated floating feed of 15kg??

Hmmmm it's been a very long time I visited this thread. I can see that the strong are still very active in the business.

It still hurts to see the assets I put so much passion, energy and money into for rearing catfish lay in waste.
After 5 consecutive loss at harvest with no one to hold responsible, juveniles seller will blame either your feed, water or farm practices for the poor output and even if same person supply all they will still find something to shift the blame to.

Do you want to talk about the buyers who price the fish same amount as they buy from the catfish wizards in Ijebu. Who can sell at the most ridiculous prices and still make profit compared to me in town that changes water in concrete pond 4 to 5 times a week with every expensive petrol and to talk of feed that rises in cost by excruciating percentage without warning.

Now I wonder what is the average cost of good feed per kg, cost of seed, cost changing water, cost of treatment in relation to selling price kg bearing in mind an average small farmer that raises 2-3 thousands fishes per cycle in a concrete or tarpaulin pond.

One now begin to wonder, is making profit in catfish farming truly real as we read on this thread and in other places. I still wonder how survived paying back my investors who I promised return on their investment after making loss on the actual money.

After paying them, what I had left could not raise another cycle as the associated cost will even increase the loss more because volume as been the major advantage of catfish farming. Then I decided to pour what I have left in Moku Mogbe Modaran (MMM) to turn around the money to be enough to raise another cycle to see if I can make make profit. We all know how the story went.

What do I do now with the Concrete pond that is diminishing by the day without use, the reserve the tank and borehole (at least they are still put to other use).

@Robonski, @Chilan @other gurus in the house who have survived in the business so far, please WHAT DO I DO.....?!

It's a pity that your experiences with regards to Catfish rearing didn't yield the desired results. I can categorically tell you that there are few things you must have not been doing right. If your location is Lagos, I can guide you through rearing techniques unto a profitable catfish production. My concept being, "Think Big, Start Small". When you must have mastered the production techniques, then grow your farm. Contact me if you're interested. WhatsApp 0802-334-0270. Good luck.

Your story raises so much concern until i got to where you invested in MMM and i quickly know what might be the cause of your loss.

Let me be practical about fish business. I would say you need at least 4 consecutive stocking with complete dedication before you master strategy that would quarrantee profit in the business.

Also, concrete pond system requires substantial investment over some period of time for it to generate income and profit. Initial investment in fish business requires external fund to boost it and not depend on reinvesting profit from the business, because there is no such profit at the initial stage.

One thing i know of a certain is that fish farming is a business, it is not a lotto, coupon, kalokalo or gambling. You must have a business mind in order to succeed.

But how can you have business mind and still believe in MMM?

Learn all the strategies that would make you succeed from people around you that are successful. There is no magic in this business. You do the right thing, you get the right result. Work on your water management, think solar, flow through, aeration, partial re-circulatory. Think feed, formulation, feed supplementary. Think added value to your product. I tell you there are so many potential that would guarantee you money with proper investment.

I wish you best of luck

Hi all, I am a new fish farmer. I have started with 3k fishes. I am using rented ponds before digging my own ponds in my own land.

I need to ask a few questions and will appreciate answers from you guys.

1. I was given an estimation of 650k for 3k fishes from juvenile to maturity will this suffice?

2. I started with feeding 3 days daily but was told to reduce it to just 2 times per day. Will this be okay?

3. With an investment of say 650-700k is it possible to make profit of at least 200k in four months? I ask this cos I have had people dropping out saying the market is ruined. A lady even told me she lost 80k. I can be patient but the stories I have been reading scare me a bit.

Let me start from your 3rd question of whether you can make profit of 200k in four months.

Sir, fish farming is not trading where you buy @ 200 and sell at 300naira with profit of 100naira. It is an investment that requires both intangible and physical asset over a period of time.
Therefore to make profit you need to invest in the right skill
You need to invest in physical tools that will aid your operation
Then you need enough time for the intangible and tangible asset to mature before profit start coming in

Sadly, most farmers are not patient enough before they quit. It doesnt matter whether you make profit or not from your first stocking, what matters is whether you are prepared to take your farming to the point where it will start generating income? If you are ready then you can even make 100% gross profit. But this doesnt happen just like that and i dont see it happening on your first attempt but it surely easy and simple to achieve

To your second question, Number of time you feed your fish is a function of your feed composition, fish metabolism, age of fish and water temperature. But economically, feeding twice or even once could save you some cash and boost your profit

To answer you first question, your skills and expertise cum business sense would determine how much you spend. You can even spend less than 200naira per fish but it all boiled down to my previous point
