Countless 121 is Dedicated to the commencement of this thread that clocked a year on the 21st of this month. Apparently, that was the day COUNTLESS was born.
A lot has happened since then that could have downed my morale and inspiration but thank God, we're still here.

Some fans have gone and more have refused to leave. Its not because am too good (especially not when considering my blunders) but just because of the special people God have bestowed in my life. People whose comments have always given me the imparative morale needed to take this story to the stage of no return. I mean amazing people... I owe you guys a whole lot...

If a prophet had told me on february last year that in a year's time, a dullard like me is going to write the story that will be the first to make a million views on Nairaland,
I would have tagged him a liability to his fellow prophets and nuisance to the whole nation. Then I will sue him to court on charges of overestimating my brain and brain abuse. Both charges would have warranted him a death sentence and a special punishment in hell. But how wrong and regretful would I be now, a year after?

Moreover, It will be a total waste of time trying to find the right words to appreciate you guys...

Just know this, because of me Countless was born, but most importantly, because of you guys, Countless have come to stay. Thanks for helping me reach this new landmark of my life!

New story coming up soon. Titled: The Dog Attendant. WatchOUT!!!

This is just the beginning!

GRACIAS!

121. COUNTLESS.

Have consulted every available dictionary at my disposal trying to come up with a word that can best describe my feelings towards Adejoke Charles but unfortunately I haven't been quite able to do so.

The words have seen so far have proven to be pure understatements when compared to what I was truly feeling in my heart. Perhaps maybe its due to the fact that have never experience true love with any other person, both before and after Adejoke came into my life.

But since its very imperative to explain my feelings for Joke to you and not minding the fact that its not easy to do, nonetheless, am going to try and explain it in more literal understandable terms.

Erm, erm, lets just say she's someone that, being with her alone without uttering any word makes me more happier than this remark my class teacher in secondary school mistakenly wrote in my 3rd term result, 'promoted to Js3. Next term begins in two years time.' Trust me, I nearly fainted on that day.

But if the above literal example isn't enough, let me ask you, have you ever been in love? Categorically, lets say blindly in love? Madly in love? Crazy in love? Foolish in love?.

The reason why am asking is that, the only way you can understand the way I love Joke is if you have ever been in those phases of love. But if you haven't been in any of the above mentioned ailments of the heart, am sorry to tell you that you're missing one of the few lovely things this cruel world has to offer as compensations for the sufferrings it has been inflicting on our poor souls.

Well, without mincing words, am truly in love with Adejoke. Infact, loving her has started making me do things I never thought I'd ever do in a lifetime.
Things like getting unnecessarily jealous and getting incensantly paranoid.

It happened one day, barely a week after we got engaged, that I got to her house and walked in on her making a call. I decided to wait till the end of the call but when I heard the voice of a man from her phone's speakers, I curiously snatched the phone from her and began shouting at the other person without checking the caller I.d.
"if you ever call my fiance again, I swear to gawd, I'll find you, I'll kill you and then I'll kill myself just to make sure you end up in hell."

"sorry sir, this is the MTN customer care center and your wife just called us to get the P.U.K of her blocked simcard....thanks for choosing MTN and have a nice day sir." Came the reply from the other end moments before the call was murdered.

At that moment, I had no choice than to check the caller I.d and truthfully, it was 180. I looked at Joke whose seething expression was featuring frustration. I then drop the phone on top of the table and begin to beg her.

"please am sorry, I thought you..."

"will this ever end?" She cuts in. "When will you start trusting me? I think you're already taking this too far and seriously, am getting tired..." She continue lamenting while I just bowed my head in regret.

Weeks after, all my attempt to see her were futile as her work had consumed most of her time and when I do go to see her at night in her house, she always complain of tiredness.

I don't know maybe she's trying to avoid me or plain result of her works nature but hence the more reason why we need to talk. There's a lot to talk about, I need to know about her mum. Doris, you remember my relationship with her right? Yes, I need to know about her, and since I haven't seen either her nor Nike since have re-established my relationship with Joke, all the more reason why I needed to.

But after a lot of pressure, I eventually got her to talk to me one day.
"my mum is now in America, helping my sister to face her studies...so dear.." She placed her palm on my laps and smiled at me briefly before she continued. "don't worry, both of them will consent to our relationship." That was the reply she gave me after I'd asked her about her mum and Nike.

"am not saying they won't but am just worried on why I haven't heard from neither of them..."

"do you trust me?" She asked.

"when we are counting sinners, do we have to count the devil too?"

"just answer me jor, do you?" She reiterated with a squinted look.

"do you even have to ask?"

"then, trust me on this...am doing everything to make this work." She concluded and the matter was never again spoken of thereafter even though I have a feeling she was hiding something but the blind love I have for her won't let me query her. You can't blame me. Am in Love!

***

Few months have passed since the day she said that unforgettable 'YES'.

I had already introduced her to my parents and siblings, plus including my new rich friends. My friends have taken both of us out on multiple occassions to exortic bars and eateries. Well, thats there own idea of welcoming her to their midst.

***

With hastened steps and mind full of curiousity, I barged into her compound through the slightly opened small gate after I'd parked my car infront of the big one.

Earlier, I had received a call from one of my rich friends, who informed me that he saw my fiancee arguing with another driver on her way home. And before he could park his own car to approach her just to know whats going on, she'd already enterred her car and zoomed off in a suspicious hurry.

After dropping the call, I was so worried and perplexed that my getting to her place without engagging in any form of accident remains but absolute misery to me considering the rate at which I'd drove the car recklessly on my way to her house.

I glanced around after stepping into the compound and the curiousness and anxiousness in me collaborated with eagerness to compel me to drop a frightened sigh the moment I saw her car parked in a very unusual way.

That was all the confirmation I needed to acknowledge the reality that, something is really wrong.

Standing right there, I began to wonder what could have happened? A 35-million-snake-swallowed thoughts began to video call in my mind.

But then, I pushed those thoughts to the back of my mind as the initiative to find out her wellbeing seems stronger than those thoughts.

It was starting to drizzle and without any further ado, I headed straight for her sitting room. I met one of her house helps inside and questioned her of the whereabouts of her mistress.

"uncle Daruusmart, something is wronging with madamu o."

"Mama Bola, please tell me. Where is she?" I queried impatiently again.

"she dey upstairs o but...." I didn't let her finish her statement before I switched to my Buggatti mode and within seconds, I was inside her room.

"honey? Sweetie? Where are you?" I voiced after glancing around and all that was staring at me was her absence and the untidy look of her always tidy room. I became instantly more worried as I stood at akimbo glancing frantically across the room.

I spent some few seconds trying to figure out what could have prompted the agglomeration of the room but couldn't find one.

I retraced my steps back to the lobby in an attempt to ask mama Bola where her boss really is, but just as I was about to descend on the steps, a few metres away from the study room, a loud wailing sound caught my sense of hearing.

Yes, you guessed just right. The speed I took towards the study room was faster than both the kidnap and return of the Dapchi girls.

"kpin." Thats the sound of the door handle that has refused to open. I tried opening it again, but all to no avail but yet, the wailing and its wailer are getting more seriously loud with each passing second I spent trying to open the door.

"Joke! Please open the door!" I shouted after working up a sweat and the door still won't open.

"Darous?!" Came the reply from inside.

"yes Joke, its me..please open this door...talk to me...please..." I stated as quickly as any fast talker could do while my head was still clunged to the door.

"Darous...please go away.." That came out very soft with a sobbing sound but its effect on me was the contrary. "am cursed! Please go away before I infect you with my curse."

"what course are you talking about? English 101 or Maths 2018?"

"am damn serious! Go away!"

"not until you open this damn door!" I shouted back.

"no..no...I can't risk the chance of infecting you too." She paused to sniff but I listened on. "why is my life turning out like this... When she told us that she was travelling out of the country, we were so happy that we didn't smell any foul. Just five months after, we received a call from a hospital in Norwich informing us that she's in labour and requesting for our permission before they can carry out the operation on her since she's too weak to deliever by herself. We had to go there on an impromptu circumstances." She paused again to draw a long sorrowful breath. "before we got there, they've already performed the operation. One of the babies had already died in her womb while the other was hale and bouncing but mum was in a coma.
The doctor's have tried all their best and we've nearly exhausted all our resources on her which was why I had to let my sister stay with her while I had to come back here to work up some money to continue her treatments....although the doctors have been preparing us for this inevitable moment..." At that moment, my mind have switched to trance mode. A lot of awkward and regretful thoughts have started emanating in my mind.
"even though, am not suppose to take it this bad, but now...all the money spent over a year, the efforts and life have gone to waste."

"Joke...wait a sec please... Which language are you speaking...am not catching up please.."

"are you not listening to me!?" She cried out acrimoniously. "my mother is dead! She died hours..a..ago.." She bursted into cries thereafter and then the awful reality sets in to my mind, I dropped to the floor and joined her in this new classwork of wailing.

After sending her father to prison and technically involved in her mother's death, lets face it,

Am The Curse Of Her Life!

120. COUNTLESS

In those agonising short moments, I began to realise the effects of being stupid and desperate. Stupidesperate? The combination of those two state of mind is tantamount to the feeling of pain I was having at those short moments before the shadow of Joke appeared on my blurry sight.

I quickly shot my eyes and pretended to be motionless. Her hands wrapped across my neck and lifted my head to her brest region and began to sob uncontrollably.

'oh! Those lovely brest...adorable nippples..' Ah...am sorry. I know I shouldn't be thinking like that at that moment, but I just couldn't help but feel that way. Even if a feel of her brest on my head is the only good thing that came out of that stupidesperate action I took earlier, am okay.

"oh!! Gawd! Please save him!...please...Gawd help me!" That was her sobbing voice as she began to take me off the road.

"ah! Madam! Am sorry o..." That was Jide's voice. He must have parked the cars somewhere safe before coming back to attend to me. "he was just standing between the road and I had no choice to than to hit him o.."

'Ofcourse, you had no choice...silly guy.' I stated mentally with an amused smile.

"see, he's smiling..." Joke suddenly said obviously after seeing the smile on my face which was a mistake on my part.

"what!" Jide lamented and I felt his palm on my cheeks. "ah...he's already at the gate of hell o." He said after withdrawing his palms.

"what? How do you know that?" Joke queried in her benign voice.

"elders says, dying people smiles when they see where they are going. And he have obviously seen his." Jide said hurriedly and lifted my heavy weight to his arms.

"lets take him to hospital now please!" Joke cried out.

"which car? Mine is damaged."

"lets take mine...here." Joke ushered and I felt being laid in the backseat of a car.

I quickly opened my eyes and saw that Joke was at the other side of the car, I whispered to Jide. "thunder fire you. Na your papa go laugh enter hell."

"dead people don't talk. So stop talking before you start scaring someone." He replied in a whisper and closed the door.

I closed my eyes and returned to the pretending mode.

Then the car entered ignition mode and began to move.

Few minutes into the road, I hear Joke say, "you said this man was smiling because he've seen hell, but why would someone smile on their way to hell...?" Joke queried with a sceptical voice which suggested that she is not the one driving.

Knowing fully well that I can hear everything going on, Jide said, "well, we have different definitions of hell. some see that place as a comfort zone probably because they've lived through hell on earth, while some see it as what it really is." He replied and there was total silent.

"are you a christian?" Joke asked.

"not really...why do you ask?"

"nothing..just wondering why you returned after hitting a man..."

"and you think only christians does that?" Jide asked rhethorically and got no answer, or maybe she nodded in reply. I can't really say. "well," Jide continued. "Have always despise churches, but cemeteries I love. Churches celebrate fairy tales, guardian angels, patron saints, but cemeteries hold concrete proof that none of those things can save you from the inevitable."

"hmmm...thats weird."

"so is the whole world." He replied. And I felt the car making a turn.

"you sounded just like that guy." She must have pointed backwards in my direction after saying that as Jide just laughed and said,

"what makes you say that?"

"nothing...just that the way you see this life isn't that different from his too." Joke had spoken back.

"funny you...we met barely moments ago and you're starting to compare me with a dying man?"

'chai...if ah catch this idiot..eh?' I thought. 'instead of him to just go straight to the point, he's there preaching paracetamol to Ebola patients.'

It was as if Jide heard my mind. I was suprised to hear the next question he asked her.

"by the way, how are you related to that man?" Joke must have given him a bemused look as he quickly added. "am not trying to privy or something like that, but am just wondering what could have provoked the sanity of a handsome guy like him to have made him see suicide as the last resort."

'yes...finally, Jide is making sense.' I thought and listen attentively at the next discussion.

"hmmm..." Joke sighed. "well, for starters, am not comfortable telling you this...like you said, we are just strangers brought together by circumstances."

"okay...trust me. Am a great listener...and who knows, I might be able to help." He stated and confidence could be felt in his voice.

"alright..." I heard the sound of someone adjusting in a seat as if preparing to deliever a lecture and Joke's voice resumed shortly afterwards. "This man and I were friends..."

Don't let me bother you with the epistle of what she narrated to Jide, which you already know. But at the end, Jide asked her this question.

"but do you really believe he did all that?"

"I don't know what to believe anymore..." She stated exasperatedly.

"okay...can I ask you this?." He implored softly.

"sure..." She replied.

"do you still love him?"

There was total silent inside the car except the loud hootings of the other passing cars.

I listened attentively with eagerness awaiting her reply.

"I think...I think I don't have an answer to that. My mind and heart are not acting together right now. My mind is telling me to run from him but my heart is saying otherwise." She ended and let out a sigh.

"fair enough." Jide said. "my advise for you is simple, just follow your heart."

"I did once and I already told you how that ended..."

"and thats why you need to give it a second chance. You said it yourself that you've been finding it difficult to love someone else...and that to me, mean't one thing....your heart still beats for...."

"stop right there!" She said.

I thought, just like you and Jide that she was angered by what Jide was saying but apparently, she wasn't.

"what!" Jide exclaimed.

"park the car here...thats the hospital." She said.

"oh! That...I thought you were..."

"angry?" She cuts in. "no...I'm only trying to tell you we've reached the hospital."

"oh...okay. Let me reverse the car."

The car was eventually brought to a stop.

***

"we've given him some drugs and injections...he's going to be alright. Just let him rest for a while and he will be ready for discharge tomorrow morning." That was the voice of the female doctor that just treated me. She was explaining to Jide and Joke at the entrance of my ward.

"okay doctor." They both chorused in unison.

"who among you will stay the night with him?"

I opened my eyes and stare down at the entrance where they all stood. "erm...is that necessary?" Joke asked.

"yes. Incase he wakes up and needed something."

"okay. It was I that hit him. I'll stay." Jide said and I nearly cursed him before Joke spoke.

"no...no...I got him into the road...Its my responsibility to stay with him...moreover, you're still a stranger to him."

'stranger indeed.' I thought and smile mentally as the doctor walked out. Joke and Jide said some words to eachother which I wasn't able to hear and they both went out.

An hour later, Joke came back inside bearing food and drinks in her hands.

She place the foods on the table beside my bed and dragged a chair closer to seat.

I shook my body slowly to make her aware of my consciousness and it did.

"Darous..." She called softly with an anticipating look. "are you awake?"

"whe..re..am I?" I said slowly and turned my head sideways to face her.

She rose up after settling her eyes on me and quickly embrace me on the bed.

I heard some sobbing sounds from her before she said, "why? Darous why?" She longed into my eyes for answers but there was none to give.

"is this how much you love me? You want to kill yourself?"

"a life without you is meaningless Joke..."

I paused and watch as tears began to assemble in her eyes. "ah gawd! You are full of suprises..." She said amid silent sobs.

"do you remember this words? If I have the letters 'HRT', I can add an 'EA' to get a 'HEART' or a 'U' to get 'HURT'. But, I'd rather add a 'U' and get 'HURT' than have a 'HEART' without U...Joke," I called her and lifted up her jaw. "everything I did today was just a testament to those words. I Love U."

"I...LOVE YOU TOO.." She replied and cuddle up to me. We stayed like that for a long time that night.

***

3day later, Joke and I are back to being lovers. Although it came with a risk, but 'Sucessful people are ordinary people with an extraordinary amount of determination.' A quote from the cover of one of my higher big notes in secondary school.

***

Joke and I were inside the big and popular Precious pharmacy to procure some drugs, when I knack my car keys, gently against the iron pole to get the attention of everyone.

I got on one knee infront of Joke and turning around, I saw that people were looking forward to a romantic moments, soI began to talk......

"I know, am not the perfect man and I can't promise not to let you down but I promise to get you up eachtime I do. Adejoke.

Am ready to be a Merlin to your Arthur, a Seeker to your confessor, a Jack Bauer to your USA and a password to your phone."

I paused and brought out a gold ring with a heart-shaped diamond design on it. I held it up against her teary face and knowing that a lot of people were watching us, I proceeded.

"Adejoke, will you marry me?" I stated softly with an anxious tone hoping she will not let me down. But she was just staring at me with a face overwhelmed with confusion and excitement.

"please Joke, you're my life, I can't live without..."

"stop talking please..." She cuts in sharply in a tone that got me worried.

"why?" I asked with a shaking voice.

"so I can say YES!..yes I will Marry you Darous!." She shouted delightedly. I inserted the ring into the appropriate finger and a round of applause and hootings followed instantly.

Atlast!

You guys have been wonderful.

Madrid fans, I sight you o. I have just three letter words for you and am sure you will understand it.

P.S.G

Atlast!
