The list is old. It was written in 2016.

Yoruba women are the most represented in tech. I mean, you can tell who is more productive when you see the people going back and forth with men to do afonja and Igbo.

Not like I was expecting anything else from wo(men) with beards and yam legs anyway grin

me too I feel that every Yoruba sons and daughter should work more on individual development so as to progress even more and that’s by establishing more private indigenous company than reliance on government company.

okway:
Rensource raises $3.5m to take affordable renewable energy to more Nigerians

Ademola “Demmy” Adesina is the founder and CEO of Rensource, a West African-focused distributed energy services company.

Rensource, a Lagos-based renewable energy startup, has raised $3.5 million in bridge financing to expand its business. This is coming nearly 2 years after a previous seed round of $1.1m in 2016.

This new round is led by Mauritius-based Amaya Capital Partners, with participation from Omidyar Network and Pule Taukobong‘s CRE Venture Capital, which previously led Andela’s $40m Series C round. Interestingly, CRE Venture Capital participated in the original seed round for Rensource.

Founded in 2015 by Ademola Adesina and Jussi Savukoski, Rensource is hinged on a core belief that distributed power generation will be a critical element in solving the power problem in Nigeria.

Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency agrees. According to her, “Nigerians spend about $14 billion annually on inefficient power generation. Off-grid alternatives like creating mini grid and solar home systems can easily be at $9.2 billion a year, which will save the Nigerian public and citizens $4.2 billion.”

In March 2017, Rensource introduced a tiered subscription-based business model that enabled customers pay to use energy, rather than own the infrastructure. The idea was to provide affordable renewable energy on a ‘Power-as-a-Service’ (PaaS) basis.

The new capital injection will primarily go into expanding operations to Kano and Abuja. There are also plans to capture the B2B market with a ‘Powered by Rensource’ offering that will enable Nigerian businesses to leverage its infrastructure.

“This investment further affirms the growing consensus that renewables-based distributed energy generation — taking power to the people — is the future of Nigeria’s power industry,” says Anu Adasolum, General Manager of Rensource. “Rensource is uniquely placed to lead this charge. We’re excited to welcome Amaya Capital and the Omidyar Network on this journey and are proud to be enabling Nigerians’ power independence”.

Going by the nature of the investment (bridge financing), it probably is not far-fetched to expect a huge Series A funding round in the coming months, should Rensource deliver quickly on its short-term goals.

VerveTree is a tech hub set to launch in Ogun State

Ogun state — the Gateway state — is known for its tourist attractions like the Olumo rock and Omo Forest Reserve. As many also know, it houses the highest number of tertiary institutions in the country. It’s a land of opportunities in its own right.

In recent years now, Ogun state has been a major economic hub having one of the largest concentrations of industries in Nigeria but yet, there has been little said about the state being an innovation district in the technology ecosystem. However, VerveTree, an IT consulting firm in the state’s capital, Abeokuta has revealed plans to launch its first tech hub.

The company, which is the brain-child of Ayoola Olaniyi, an ex Project Manager at CcHub and Olanrewaju Olatunde, looks to create awareness, engage in discussions and explore solutions needed to grow early-stage technology within the state.

It recently hosted a tech summit which was graced by leading stakeholders within the technology and innovation ecosystem in Nigeria (such as Bosun Tijani of CcHub, Seni Sulyman of Andela, Kola Aina of Emerging Platforms, Tolu Ogunlesi amongst many others) and recorded about 1500 participants which were mostly youths in tertiary institutions and small business owners within the state.
In a discussion with Ayoola Olaniyi, he said the hub will be a solution centre for the creative thinker and great innovations. He added that it will offer startups the opportunity to work with facilities and research institutes within the state.

VerveTree has decided to focus on harnessing the pool of talents in tertiary institutions (14 universities, 2 colleges of education, 5 polytechnics) within the state because they house thousands of viable talent and, with the right mentorship and support, could produce potential startup founders and business entrepreneurs that will drive innovation in the state.

To further leap towards the image being envisioned, VerveTree will call for ideas in March out of which 5 will be picked to kick-start the hub in July this year.

The Ogun state governor, Senator Ibukunle Amosun, pledged his support during the just concluded tech summit. He said the state will earmark $1 million to support startups so as to lift the technology ecosystem and boost digital literacy and technology entrepreneurship within the state.

One may wonder where the state government will get the funds to fulfill its promise for local startups. Its ₦345.4 billion 2018 state budget, which was presented last November has ₦223.7 billion assigned to capital expenditure, with only ₦121.69 billion to take care of recurrent expenditure. However, the expected revenue from both Internally Generated Revenue and Federation Account total ₦197.3 billion — a shortfall of ₦26.4 billion.

Nevertheless, VerveTree is not relying on government funds to run its operations, as it seeks to leverage partnerships towards the sustainability of the innovation hub.

According to Ayoola, VerveTree has some array of partnerships with other stakeholders such as the Co-Creation Hub, the World Bank, Samsung Heavy Industries, the GIZ, the Central Bank of Nigeria amongst others to strengthen and accomplish its goals.
L-R: Seni Sulyman (Country Director, Andela), Senator Ibukunle Amosun (Ogun state governor) and Ayoola Olaniyi (CEO, VerveTree)

Its just a hyperbole compliment because I love Yoruba people and they are doing a good mission assisting the people of Nigeria and beyond to experience one of the best African cultures. What I said, I said out of playfulness, congratulations, it wasn't never meet to be academic, which you seem to have taken it too. I am not in competition that belongs to Nigerias who compete with different ethnic groups, I love other Nigerians cultures like Fulani, Benin, Fon, Akan, Buganda, Tooro, Kitara, Bunyoro Kitara, Zulu, Igbo, Dahomey, Congo, Kenya, I love alot of them, too many to name. These are thousands of years old cultures and traditions and I love to study them all but only had time to study one extensively like Yoruba. Do you ever notice in my threads I promote all of Nigeria and West Africa betterment? Stop climbing down my back to piggyback your competitive advantage.

24-year-old Nigerian author gets Hollywood deal for new book | By Jane Augoye | Premium Times, March 18, 2018.

When Tomi Adeyemi, a Nigerian-American author, started writing her critically acclaimed Young-Adult Fantasy book, titled ‘Children of Blood and Bone,’ she had no idea it would become so successful that it would attract the attention of one of the top film production houses, in America.

Adeyemi's first novel which was launched on March 6th this year, has just been signed up by Hollywood Fox Studios in a mouth-watering seven figure book-and-movie deal. It was acclaimed as a “Black Lives Matter-inspired fantasy novel,” a year ago.

Fox 2000, which purchased the film rights before the novel was released, was so impressed by the 24-year-old’s writing style that they tagged the project as being as successful as its other YA franchises, Twilight and Maze Runner.

Almost a year before it hit shelves, the novel was making headlines. In March 2017, it was reported that Adeyemi had earned a seven-figure book deal for her young-adult trilogy. Fox Studios noted that it was so impressed with the 24-year-old’s writing, that it decided to obtain the film rights before the novel was even released.

Ms Adeyemi, the daughter of a Nigerian medical doctor and hospice trader, was born in the U.S. and currently lives in San Diego.

Adeyemi, who has been referred to as the next J.K. Rowling (writer of the successful Harry Potter series), created an epic tale of an oppressive world that a lot of black people can relate with.

She hinged her characters, their conversations and habitats on the rich culture and traditions of her indigenous Yoruba culture. Her book is steeped in traditional Yoruba folklore, and its pantheon of mystical gods known as the Orishas. Her book got to number 1 on the New York Times Young Adult Hardcover Best Sellers list!

The book follows the protagonist ‘Zelie’, who at six years old watched the king’s guards hang her mother on a tree outside her home.

She never forgot it. "In the beginning, every Orïshan was a magi: born with dark skin, stark white hair and the blessing of the god’s magic once they reached adulthood. Yet over time, their population dwindled and they became Orïsha’s minority. Magic became a thing to loathe, dark skin transformed into a thing to hate...." Proud girl.
Tomi Adeyemi is a Nigerian-American writer and creative writing coach. She is known for her book Children of Blood and Bone, the first in a trilogy to be published by Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group.
Tomi Adeyemi graduated from Harvard University with an honors degree in English Literature, then studied West African mythology and culture in Salvador, Brazil, on a fellowship.

She went to Hinsdale Central High School in Hinsdale, Illinois.
Adeyemi has written a book that will be released in 2018 called Children of Blood and Bone. It is a young-adult (YA) fantasy novel,[4] featuring protagonist Zélie Adebola, who fights a monarchy to return magic to her people. Adeyemi has said she wanted to write a fantasy novel set in West Africa so that "a little Black girl [could] pick up my book one day and see herself as the star...I want her to know that she’s beautiful and she matters and she can have a crazy, magical adventure even if an ignorant part of the world tells her she can never be Hermione Granger.

Fox 2000 has purchased the film adaptation rights to the book. Reportedly the deals for the publishing and film rights were approximately seven figures:Deadline described it as "one of the biggest YA debut novel publishing deals ever.
