Nigeria’s cocoa export rises

MAY 19, 2018

OVER 300,000 tonnes of cocoa was exported from Nigeria last year, Executive Director, the Partnership in the Niger Delta, (PIND), Dr. Dara Akala, has said.

Akala spoke in Akure, Ondo Stste capital, during the Cocoa Value Chain Study Validation Workshop. “2017 saw an increase in the quantity of cocoa exported from Nigeria rising from about 250,000 tonnes exported in 2016 to more than 300,000 tonnes in 2017”, he said. “The increase was triggered by the devaluation of the Naira in 2016 by the Nigerian government in a bid to wade off recession. “While the devaluation of the Naira and subsequent increase in tariffs or outright ban of certain imported goods led to a 30% loss in the value of Nigeria’s currency in comparison to the United States of America’s Dollar.”

Nonetheless, he stated that products like cocoa enjoyed increased demand and production because of its viability as an export product. Akala urged government at all levels and other development partners to utilize the economic potentials available in cocoa production to cushion the effects of global oil doom. “As Nigeria’s cocoa production and export began to increase in 2017, the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) carried out a value chain study of the sector between January and April 2018,” he said. The PIND Market Development Projects Manager, James Elekwachi, said ‘’cocoa sector has the growth potential and the opportunity to increase income and employment for millions of people, especially the unskilled and semi-skilled in the region.”

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, also speaking at the occasion, revealed that the state government has embarked on several revolutionary measures to optimally utilize the cocoa potentials in the state for massive development.

We are being bamboozled with mediocre reports..
You lay claims to 20% increase when we have done way better in the past.

Then what really is the fuss on agricultural diversification if we cant do better than we have done before the big name? That is the reason the common man is not feeling it.

Its more like giving a big name to a less than average result..

Notice how the north always says they feed nigeria but all of our exports are southern products? In fact we didn't start exporting rice until southerners got serious about it. Don't let anyone fool you about northern nigeria. Nothing is happening there.

If 2017 increased from 250,000 of 2016 to 300,000. We have a long way to go getting back to where we were without the big name (Agricultural diversification) in reference to the UN comtrade chart.

If you were an educated man, it you would know that Biafra never ran out of food it ran out of protein because the UK blocked Norway from bringing in the primary source of protein: stock fish.

Too little protein may cause changes in body composition that develop over a long period of time, such as muscle wasting. The most severe form of protein deficiency is known as kwashiorkor. It most often occurs in children in developing countries where famine and imbalanced diets are common.

Fools like you keep disgracing yourself because of partisan politics. Go to Ondo state and ask the farmers how they have benefitted before exposing your ignorance. In 2016 alone, a lot of cocoa farmers suddenly became multi millionaires as a result of price increase per kg from #300 to #1200 as a result of the increase in dollar.

Lol. Only stock fish made millions of people to die of kwashiorkor. Your education is a waste.

They've started trowing around another set of statistics. That's how Dangote went to build massive tomato paste factory from their bogus stats. Started production, only for tomatoes to dry up in d land after some weeks.

The federal government is not doing enough on cocoa compare to when Adesina was minister of Agriculture. Ondo state government need to focus on establishment and rehabilitation of the state cocoa seed garden, pays the casual workers in those seed gardens their salaries of over two years, employ youths and train them on cocoa pollination to get more hybrid cocoa for distribution to farmers.

Not really. We aren't able to process it. We export to import. Same thing with oil, which is why although Nigeria exports a lot of oil, it's still expensive to buy.
