It's been almost a year since I left there.
I slept at the Akpapka police station three years ago cuz we were having a loud house party way into the midnight.
It's almost a daily routine for me & my neighbours to stroll from Gabahon to Mama Emma or to play snooker at Apple Store, and not once did we encounter police gbege before 12am.

About going into people's houses, it's got to be that they're smoking weed or playing loud music, and it's the Beninoise around them that will call the police.

About the old stop-and-search, you should know they're only looking for students with expired lesse-passe (or school I.D )

Yes it is safe, it is one of the most safest place you can be. But like that guy said up there, He should just be law abiding, don't move unnecessarily at night, don't argue. Trust me, Benin Republic is very safe to live in, peaceful and quiet with lots of beaches to relax, lots and lots of beaches

Oga my work takes me through about 5 west African countries for the past 12 years and the only time some of my employees got arrested by gendarme's was because they went partying at jon k without their passports,and I went to bail them with just 4000 CFA each accompanied with their passports and I simply explained that they work for a shipping company with proofs.T hey were let go same night...If you don't have valid ID,s in cotonou,thats an attraction to arrests.

That explains it, please read the title of this thread before you call people liars, it clearly says "students". And I being a student there four years ago can boldly tell you my experience in the hands of Gendarmeries, 9pm at night, going home, with my valid ID that they didn't ask for, was arrested for no damn reason and was taken to their station and I bailed myself with 15k cfa for no damn reason. I saw people get arrested in ATM stands, people going to fetch water, people sitting in their front yard, I saw all these that night, and I also saw them drive past their locals, all they were after that night were Nigerians. This I witnessed myself.

Like I said in my initial post, not all Nigerians detained there are unlawfully or wrongly detained. But they still g around harassing Nigerians needlessly, Especially "students"

You can stay there undisturbed for as long as you can, reasons are;
1) You don't go to Nigerian hotspots, avoid it like a plague
2) You don't stay in the town
3) You're not the type that stays at home all through the day.
4)No loud music.
5)Be wary of the citizens, they can be cunny.

Abide by these and live happily.

The reason is that high profile criminal activities in Benin Republic are mostly perpetrated by Nigerians. Armed robbery was not known there until Nigerians started robbing their banks.
Someone from Benin Republic told me that in their country, when they see a Nigerian, they believe he is a militant/criminal.
