They dont need anyone's permission to actualize that. They can make it happen. In fact the power to amend and restructure is given solely to HOA and exclusive of others. What are they waiting on? |

Recall that Nigeria practised the British-styled parliamentary system of government in the First Republic, from 1960 until 15 January, 1966 when the military took power. However, the 1979 Constitution returned the country to the US-styled presidential system of government, largely because of the tensions and acrimonious politics of the First Republic. Why can't we have our own system of government? 1 Like |

What system of government does the USA practice? Was it not the parliamentary system of government that was practiced before the military took over? What exactly was the reason the military saw that prompted the take over at that early age after independence? |

Any system of government that exclude the legislators (The Senators & House of Representatives with House of Assembly) will be okay for the country. The Legislators are the ones running the country aground with their powers. (AK)3 1 Like |

hope they know we won't be needing two legislative houses and we'd have to cut down their total numbers by half? I doubt if the majority of members of both houses will agree to this, just another fantastic idea going nowhere |

Cletus77:Like rottennaija said we keep running away from the elephant in the room and we r seek one magic bullet that solves everything and unfortunately there is none! Its no longer restructuring, its now parliamentary system! Hmm ok o Just yesterday the South East Development Commision bill was passed to improve infrastructure in the South East, maybe the SE need to understudy how the SS keep "eating" the billions thats been pumped to the SS or else it will be an exercise in futility! Its not about all the "magical systems that we believe will solve everything" but about making judicious use of resources for what they are meant for! All this is jst bla bla bla in my opinion 1 Like |

No problem, na this country all of us dey. That's how one Igbo man named Aguyi Ironsi decided to change our system of government then to Presidential out of fear of domination. And the Igbo nation have been the worse of for it. Now they are moving to for another year one. No wahala. Let them go ahead. SE have only 5 states they cannot move for a motion to create one for their region. They cannot move motion for all states to have same numbers of Reps in Nass. Please tell them to continue |

inkon: Before answering airing my idea, I would want to say, today, we look to Ghana for what they have achieved so far in their economy. But we forget that they was a time Ghana was worse off than Nigeria. General Jerry John Rawlings carried out what was basically a purge in Ghana and reposition the country as we come to see and appreciate it today. I'm not in anyway saying we should try that in Nigeria. Not that we can even succeed, even if we try. But truth is, the average Nigerian is corrupt. It's endemic in our system. More than 95% of our leaders and policitians are corruption and the younger generation are trained to be corrupt after their master. If we can purge them, then we can set ourselves free and start something new. But it's impractical, not even the law can help purge them because the law was made to favour them. But without stopping corruption in our system, forget it, we will always build on faulty grounds. And those coming to invest in our country will be the corrupt minded ones and so corruption begets corruption. |

akinblog: Boom! I have been saying this for a while now. Finally we are thinking right. The presidential system only allows for two main parties which is too small for a country with multiple tribes like Nigeria. I need to create a thread one of this days to highlight the pros and cons of a parliamentary system. It really fits Nigeria than this system we currently practice. |
Re: House Of Representatives Wants Nigeria Returned To Parliamentary System by davidif: 9:10pm On Dec 13, 2018 |
rottennaija: Bros I think you are wrong on this one. The parliamentary system is the best form of govt for a country as diverse as Nigeria. If done well, It ensures that the best of the best of each party gets to run the country. I will soon create a thread on the advantages and disadvantages of the parliamentary system of govt and why it would be better for Nigeria than he current system which only provides two major parties (and candidates) each election. |

Corrinthians: The general elections are coming up in the next few weeks and a new parliament and executive with a fresh tenure begins in May 2019. I do not see them passing this bill before the end of the sitting legislature, even if they have the support of other members and the Senate. I do not see the utility of this move. |
