Save the money for the car and fix it in treasury bills.

Don't think about a car below 300k salary

Unless if you're married with kids and public transport might be unweildy

MY NIGGA, GO AHEAD AND BUY YOUR CAR AND STOP SEEKING THE OPINIONS OF PEOPLE. DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY. MAJORITY OF PEOPLE HERE WILL ADVISE YOU AGAINST BUYING A CAR CAUSE THEY JEALOUS AND WISH THEY HAD YOUR 100K JOB. THE SAME PEOPLE HERE SAYING YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN A CAR WITH YOUR SALARY ARE EARNING A FRACTION OF YOUR SALARY YET THEY GOT CARS, SOME DON'T EVEN HAVE A JOB TALK MORE OF SALARY YET THEY HAVE A CAR. SO DON'T LISTEN TO ANYBODY'S NONSENSE TALK, GO AHEAD AND BUY YOUR CAR. IF IT GETS SPOILT AND YOU DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX IT THEN YOU PARK IT TILL YOU CAN AFFORD THE REPAIR COST. HERE ABROAD WE DO THIS ALL THE TIME EVEN WHEN WE CAN AFFORD TO REPAIR IT. SOON THIS SAME PEOPLE WILL TELL YOU YOU CAN'T AFFORD A GIRLFRIEND WITH YOUR SALARY THAT YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE ONE INSTEAD YOU SHOULD PATRONIZE ASHAWO ONCE A MONTH THAT ITS CHEAPER.

1500naira fuel in Lagos is even small compare to the kinda traffic you will face in Lagos, what do you think causes a car to break down in a terrible traffic.
I wouldn't advice anyone to fuel is car with 1500naira fuel when he knows the probability of facing traffic on his way home is high...

A car is never a luxury except in Nigeria....

Don't know about where you are talking about but here in lagos to enter transport to work cost approximately 500 but to fuel a car I will spend 1500 a day (residents of iyanoba to orile lagos can attest to this) So tell me, if I earn 100k and spending 1500×5, you tell me how much it is, the truth should be said, for a guy at his age and status car is a luxury to him, why not he saves that money or invest and when he can earn 150 or even 200 then he is good to afford such luxury

Funny enough, many of them are asking him to invest. Now, if you ask them invest in what? They don't know. Most of them just like the sound of the word, "invest."

Some will even tell him to go and buy land. Lol. They don't know that buying land is an easy way to lose both your money and the land.

The only thing that is still keeping me from buying a car is my parents. My dad is a retiree and mom is still in active service earning good pay. But once they see me with a car today, they will start assuming that I am already a "big man" and start heaping responsibilities on my head. For now, I don't want that.

Nice one bro. U just took the bolded right out of my mouth. Ask a Blackman how he got rich he will reply "na God ooo" like say God pack the money come his doorstep. Ask them what to do with a certain amount of money the self acclaimed wise ones will say "invest" with less than a zero clue on what to actually invest on.

OP I believe n hope u later followed your heart.

Good advice, but the missing word of advice is what I put on display.

1: if your business did not demand for it please don't buy a car.
2: You are still young and I think your money should be divided by half which half goes to your monthly upkeep and every other needs while the other half goes for investment for your future and in preparedness of your own family ( at least 5-10 years now if your salary remains will give you approximately 6 million naira in investment)
3: Reasons of getting a car in Nigeria if you are on the average salary earner is either or both for Business or Family. To take your your family around when needs arises; to school for the children, wife to office if you can and weekend pleasure instead of taxification.

Getting a car is not the problem but maintaining it is the problem, ask yourself, what do you need the car for? business or just eko for show, if it's for business then go ahead but for the latter do not try it[/quote]

OP buying a car is a major investment like renting a house, so before you buy a car, do your math to help you make an informed decision.

Before you even start looking for a car, you should have a budget, that is, how much you’re willing to spend from your savings. Normally, you should not spend more than 30% of your yearly income on a car OR not more than 10% of your 5 year future income... but based on Naija reality, I guess you could go over this limit a little bit since I don’t know if you’ll get a good car for the price I quoted. You could also see this as you not being ready for a car yet strictly from the budgetary point of view

After you decide on a budget, Find a car that fits your budget, then do some research on the cost of maintenance and fueling of the car in one year, divide this amount by 12 and that’s how much you should put away in a special account every month whether you use it or not. For instance, someone mentioned they spend 60k Annually on their car, so I guess they put away 5,000 monthly into their maintenance account.

After doing all these calculations, are you still able to save enough?

My advise is Don’t rush into any decision yet till you do your math, a car is a major investment you can return once you walk out the door of the dealer. In fact, once you drive out of the dealer, your car just lost up to a hundred thousand or more if you try to resell it immediately

All the best

My own opinion, you don't need a car, save the money for a business, marriage, investment................ I'm sure there's a utility car where you live.
Bro I really appreciate you good advice for the IP I swear. He doesn't understand before you send your money as if what you are spending it on is an asset or a liability. If it's a liability ask yourself how many asset have you invested in, I really hope on this stage of his life want he need to do is start investing his money on land etc

Better don’t buy EOD,when the legs started tearing on the road, you will be the first to place for sale on it.the truth is that you don’t need any daily money to maintain a car.buy a Camry pencil light grade 1 for 650 or 700 and use it for 3 years.

Re sell and still have your 650 back.plan this today and thank me After a year.

100k can't maintain a car, I disagree with this, a car isn't necessarily be seen as a luxury, but as a means of making life easier. If you spend close to #500 a day for transport come on for a week its #2500 even that I can use for close to a week on a V6 3.0L, I magine if the op was driving a corolla with 1.6L engine or 1.8L engine it will make a lot of sense.

How much does it cost to service a car in a year theoretically
Engine oil 12K x 3
Filter let's say 2K x 3
Brakepads 24k for a year all legs
Miscellaneous 20k
Total for a year 86,000
And you would have earned 1.2m in a year remove the maintenance from it u still have 1.1m to spend

Since I have been using my car for a year (clean title tokunbo) I have not even spent 50k on it for a year I just change oil twice in a year, filter, brakes and light bulbs.

Do you earn 100k. If you do , I guess u have other means of getting money aside your salary. Don't deceive him. I earn 350k as a professional automotive trainer, but I tell u with d technical knowledge I have regarding d use of cars, with 100k salary he can maintain a certain kind of car but he should note that he will not be able to save again n may live in debt.

My brother, we only live once. Let's not make this life look like a rehearsal for another life.

If you have saved enough money to buy a car, please do. 100k salary can help you maintain a low maintenance cost car. Owning a car gives you a sense of responsibility.

Just don't think it's a tool for showoff or to get more women.

I wish you the best, enjoy.

So basically everybody that has a car earns more than 100k, is married or has investments??

Calm down and get the message. People who don't earn a dime have cars and maintain it by God-knows-what-means, but it's not the best.

Wisdom demands that you don't acquire liabilities until you have enough running funds. At this point in your life, you need to save very well. You might need a good sum of money for a project tomorrow, and then what, you'll start begging people? Maintaining a car with a the 100k salary would greatly thin your savings.

I agree that a car has largely become a necessity rather than a luxury, especially in this Lagos, but you can safely do without it for now. Work isn't far from home as you said...and you still live with your folks.

My brother save up o. You might need to get your own place in the nearest future. Lagos rent isn't a joke!

1500 on fuel daily ? You must be cruising around town in a Bulldozer

Lmao cheesy grin. But I don't very much doubt it... Iyana-Iba to Ajah daily should consume that amount of fuel. Hold up is a reality! Bad roads will destroy your tyres! grin grin

Buy a car. Experience is the best teacher. It is either you make it or you don't. Buying and maintaining a car is an experience that is better lived than imagined. The good thing is that like a bad marriage, if it does not work out in your favour, you will become an amateur philosopher.

By the way, don't forget to add police "Roger" in the cost of running the car. It is very important too.

you are very right, even if you earn 50k, you can still deal, because what you spend on transportation alone can fuel your car and you will still have change. Just drive carefully to avoid accident, lastma, Vio, FRSC and other
