500k is even to much, my brother did not spend up to 250000 for his wedding. Just court and tradition. After which they went to church for blessing that's all. They r happily married wit child.

Traditional remains the one and only legal marriage for Nigeria as a local. No more, no less.

Seriously? Because you stated it so emphatically does not make it true. Women have found out that they have no benefits under the traditional marriage. Which is why more and more women opt for the registry.

My marriage did not cost me more than 700 to 800k.

All the traditional stuff took about 250,000

Now coming to the wedding.

Wedding gown is 35,000
Bride shoe 4000
Purse 4000
Accessories 15,000 (my wife does not wear ear rings and necklace)
Souvenirs 23,000. (Majority of plastics and ceramics. I went to Aba cus things are extremely affordable there)
Venue: I used a private school field given to me for free
Chairs and canopies and tables 17k. (300 seats)
Cake 18k for 3 steps (my wife loved the cake)
Decoration 2000 per canopy. 10k for 5 canopies
Drinks 38,000
Food: I can't really tell how much because I bought the condiments myself and my mom brought a caterer who did the cooking for us for free. 2 cartons of chicken was used for rice and beef of 15000 was used for soup. We used just one bag of rice.
My suit and my bestman's took 20k including socks.
I bought one OK shoes for 6k. My bestman bought for himself. (Some people will support your ministry Las Las)
Gave my in-laws 20k for dress. My dad's I bought myself 2k and sewing 3k. Gave my mom 10k for dress too.
Paid 5k for certificate. The pastor no even expect am.( They were too good to me)

If I remember any other, I go add.

Exactly why women opted for it; not because it is or was part of our custom backing marriage.. That's more like a signed agreement between couples for future reference.

Lolz comments oh.

The issue is not the money, the money isn't much, just that inflation of Naira made it seem big, all thanks to Buhari the recession bringer angry

This is less than $8,000.

During Goodluck time, if u had spent this amount, in fact, your wedding would be listed on Forbes, but no, Yoruba people out of tribal bigotry and hatred said Goodluck is the worst President that destroyed Nigeria, while Buhari is the Messiah, well-done Yoruba people angry

Yoruba's voted for Jonathan in 2011. He won all Yoruba states except Osun state despite Tinubu urging them to vote Ribadu.

Yoruba's turned against him in 2015 because of the massive corruption under him and the Boko Haram menace he had allowed to get out of proportions.

Yoruba's are judged the most liberal of voters. Stop projecting your tribalism on them

That's the difference between a poor man's and a rich man's wedding.

The poor man spends recklessly to impress friends and family who hardly care how you survive. The rich on the other hand hardly spend on weddings and frivolities. Friends and family gather to foot the bills. From Dangote's daughter to Ajimobi's recent weddings, these folks receive massive donations from Governors, PAs, commissioners, Managers, staff, club, societies, etc. How can Halima Dangote and Abubakar, a son of a former IGP spend N1 on their wedding? Is that even possible? Yet, the struggling and helpless folks look up to these guys and make them an ideal standard to imitate.

NB: Please, if you're getting married and your supposed best man (best friend) can't afford a suit and a pair of shoes, please give him the money to do more important things in life. Your friendship is toxic, your frivolous spending is needless.

I just stumbled on my marriage note where I wrote down all my expenses while I prepared for my marriage and decided to share. This topic is to guide those planning for their wedding on how much on the average they should budget for their marriage. Although the amount you will spend depends on what you want and the tribe/family you are marrying into. I actually budgeted N1,200,000 (1.2 million) but ended up spending close to 2million.

I got married November 2018 to my beautiful esan girlfriend of 4 years. Here is the breakdown:

Pre-wedding
1. Lab test for HIV, Genotype and pregnancy (as instructed by the church) - N5000
2. Transportation to take her to see my parents - N10,000
3. Ring 18 karat gold (engagement, and wedding rings) - N75,000 (from aboki)
4. Wedding certificate - N4000
5. Wedding seminar organized by my church - N4000

Federal Registry:
1. Affidavit for spinsterhood and bachelorhood-N2000
2. Main fee - N34,000

Traditional marriage
1. Drinks - N140,000
2. Yams - N40,000
3. Salt - N4,000
4. Bride price - N10,000
5. Make up - N20,000
6. Food - N200,000
7. Transportation - N20,000
8. Photograph - N6000
9. Canopy - N6000
10. Palmwine - N2000
11. Palm oil - N12,000
12. Native kola - N3000
13. Introduction - N12,000 (did introduction same day as traditional marriage)
I love esan marriage, they don't put hole in one's pocket

White Wedding
1. Drinks and food - N300,000
2. Reception hall - N105,000 (a Catholic church event hall)
3. Decoration - N50,000
4. DJ plus MC - N35,000
5. Guest house accommodation for my parents - N15,000
6. Souvenir 100 unit (Jotter, bag and notebooks) - N93,000
7. Photographer - N20,000 (soft copies)
8. Video coverage - (Hmmmm! Money no reach)
9. My wife's wedding gown - N35,000 (rent)
10. Me and my bestman's shirt and suit - N36,000
11. My wife's makeup and accessories - N50,000
12. Hotel room for after wedding panpangolo - N18,000 for 2 nites
13. My shoe - N2,000 (it's a long story)
14. Cake (4 steps) - N15,000 (my wife baked it if not e for pass that amount)
15. Transportation for my parents back home - N10,000

This are the little I could remember, I will update as soon as I get them. It was supposed to be a budget marriage but I spent close to N2,000,000 despite cutting off as much expenses as permitted. What was ur marriage budget? Did you stick to your budget or did some unforseen expenses prop up? Please share for the benefit of those planning theirs.

Just walk to where they change dollars, you will also find hausa men that buy and sell gold. You can buy the engagement ring separate from the wedding bands or get all together if u can afford it. Go for the one without much or huge stones as the weight determines the price.
