I've shared a personal story on this exact subject & people attacked me, calling me a liar lol. Still don't know what would compel me to lie about something like that.

Anyways, I was talking to my mother & I asked her if she still remembered an incident that happened years ago. In my mind's eye I could see myself on the bed when it happened. It's nothing weird, I just don't wanna go into details on what exactly happened. She asked me how I knew about it. I told her I remember it & continued to give her more details to prove I still remember it as if it happened recently. The look on her face was of sheer horror. According to her I was only a couple of months old when it happened. Even today I don't know how I remembered, when I have memory gaps between age one & two. Generally my memory is very good. I remember a lot of things from childhood, like when I stole another girl's painting because mine was ugly & untidy grin I was in creche tongue

My earliest memory was an interesting one, I remember my mom carried me on her back to a friends house, wen we got there, I was placed on d bed, she was wiping my shitty butt wit some tissue paper, it was a room and parlour setting, there seems to be an occasion taking place in d house, I noticed a woman rolled a huge ball of tissue paper, she loosed her wrapper, she turned round n by d time she faced us, I didn't see d tissue paper again, helpless in d bed, I was lost in thoughts n was saying this woman just performed magic in my mind, I wanted to ask her where she vanished d tissue to, I guess no one understood d question I was asking...

Dad just got a new ride. My younger sister whom I'm older than wit just 2 yrs n 10 months was not yet born. Guess I was less than two sef. May be a year n 5 months.

My earliest memory was damn funny.
I think I was 4-5years of age then. So their was this girl named Amongst, she was celebrating her birthday which she brought some menu menu for we her classmates then.
We were told to come outside so as to take pictures with the celebrant. We're all outside, so a friend of mine told Me to use left hand to dodge my eye from the camera that they might used our pictures for ritual, that which I did with him..

After like 12years later, the girl moved to my secondary school, I can still remember her vividly because she left my primary school for another school when she was in primary 2. We all get to roll with one of us that we're of same set in the primary school and also in same secondary school.

On this fateful day, she brought the picture to school so as to show I and the other girl whom we both finished primary together and in the same secondary school. On seeing the picture, my mind went back to that statement latif said... I couldn't laugh.. I had to tell her the reason why we both did such..

Its damn so funny in class that day when I narrated the reason y I and latif Did such...

My earliest memory. ...

I was standing, eyes focused on the early saturday morning sun rays as it filtered through the air ports on the blocks used on one side of our shared kitchen space. I remember eagerly waiting for the food lady to pass by as I anticipated the sweet inviting aroma of my bread and agoin beans breakfast. While I waited, the sun rays formed two very visible dust path through the otherwise dark kitchen and I wondered how it would feel to catch the rays in my hands...

I was three years plus at the time

Pls you need to take this idle time assignment to students in class 1 or 2, to evaluate their aptitude for prose writing or vivid imagination.

You don't take an adult with lots of issues on his mind to topics on inanities or tales that make the brain go soft.

My earliest memory was me being thrown repatedly in the air
And me being so afraid to see the ground recede before my very eyes only to return into the arms of my uncle.

I think they were also pounding yam right beside us.

My uncle died some years back. Life wasn't good to him. He suffered a mental breakdown.
Rest well, Bro Simeon.

I was probably around 5, there was some sort of checkup going on the school, and we were asked to line up...boys and girls sperately. The first set of boys that came out said that the man inside the sickbay was putting his hand in their shorts and feeling their joysticks. WTF! I thought they were joking and was scared at the same time. I was a very quiet and private kid and this was very out of the ordinary and scary for me. I tried to run but one aunty brought me back to the queue. When it was my turn, it happened so fast and I didn't feel as awkward as before. But i still wonder what that checkup was about.

Taking a photograph, with beads on my hands. They tried to make me stay still for the cameras. And I kept wondering about the camera for years. That's why I still remember.

I was about 8 months old too

I remember crying as my mum (or was it dad) was taking me to start school. I remember the "aunty" trying to test me to determine what class I would be placed in.
I remember crying as the "aunty" is asking me to recite the alphabet and numbers.
She approves my performance and I think she decided that I would be placed in Nursery 2.
I remember that she asked my age and I answered "5".

Was I crying to go back home with my mother? I think so.
Or was it dad? Damn I'm confused shocked shocked
No solid memory before that event.
Did you cross your hand over your head to touch your ears? cheesy

There is another Nairalander who wrote a story about his own experience. He has memories of when he was about 4-6 months old and even watched the intimate going ons of his parents because they thought they had a baby on their hands, not knowing he was an old soul.

Except for very few exceptional folks like my pal Oweniwe, we don't bring memories from our past lives into the present one (although they sometimes surface from time to time. That partly explains 'deja vú')

Babies also don't retain memories, and research has indicated that most people's earliest memories only go back to about age 3-1/2. Sigmund Freud coined the term “childhood amnesia” to describe this loss of memory from the infant years. (I borrowed this from Google grin). We have a few rare exceptions like I mentioned earlier. These rare few remember back to the very first moment they opened their eyes after being expelled from the comforting warmth of their mother's womb.

I agree with the aforementioned research submission on the beginning of most people's memories because mine goes thus-

I am sitting down, holding my older sister's hand. I am wearing a white sleeveless blouse and an itty bitty, slightly faded flower blue skirt(in retrospect it must have belonged to my older sister and that explains why the colour was fading). The skirt is really short and I have to sit down with my legs tightly closed (thank God pedophilia wasn't as rampant as it is now).

I and my sister are sitting down on a low bench, in a courtyard facing a brown painted bungalow with a verandah. Flowerless green plants are in front of the bungalow. There is an old man wearing a white, knee length babariga and white trousers sitting in the verandah. Before him is a bowl of eba and ogbono soup which he is eating with such relish. I stare, fascinated at the man's Adam apple as it bobs up each time a ball of eba goes down.

My sister leans over and whispers in my ear "Ishi, don't look at him o. There is ant in his soup. He is eating eba, ant and soup."

I am horrified. I gasp in disgust and avert my eyes.

Decades later, my sister has no memory of this event but after I described the house and the courtyard to my mum, she recognised it as the very first house we lived in when we first moved to Lagos (I was 8 months old at the time). She remembered the old man. He was our neighbour. She also recalled threatening to beat the bejesus out of my sister if she ever let me out of her sight, which is why big sis was my shadow. It also explains why she was holding my hand tightly in that memory of long ago when I was 2 and a half years old, watching my neighbor swallow huge balls of eba and supposedly ant tainted ogbono soup.

And THIS, folks, is my earliest memory! cheesy Everything that happened to me prior to this is a total blank.

What's yours?

My stepmum giving me a slap and me shouting WAKA!

And with my 5 fingers too...

Probably @3 years

I was just about 1 year old, I can't really recall what happened or how it happened, seems like I was chasing a fowl that just hatched her eggs and came out with her chicks for the first time, they were eating rice that was on the ground. All of a sudden, their mother charged towards me and I saw myself flat down on my back, I don't know how I fell, the fowl pecked on my face or head like 3 times before my mom chased it away,i cried my eyes out and I felt like I was attacked by Boko Haram of today.that was my earliest memory at such a tender age because I don't think that uptil today,I have been terrified like I was that day and uptil now, I still got a great phobia for a chicken that newly hatched.each time I comes across one,i musters a lot of courage inside me before I can pass beside it and also maintains my step, may e no be like say big boy like me dey fear ordinary chicken. cry cry
