Dear friend. I am very sure that you are unaware that the Ofada rice delicacy is a sought after in any social event in the South West regions of Nigeria. However, it will interest you to note that N700/Kg is even cheap for destoned ofada rice.

To the calculations that I interest you, this prices and calculations are not based on selling ordinary paddy, but processed and fully destoned rice. That tells you I'm thinking value addition already. My market surveys already tells me the market is waiting!

These piece is only for those who give thoughts. Not some ponzi schemes.

when you say drones, are the drones continuously flying over the farm? 24/7?
24/7 ke!quela birds close frm work by 1800hrs.

To answer your question directly; the drone will not need to be flown 24/7. The birds attack during the day only. So you only fly during the day. Do you fly all through the day? No. But you may need to fly for most of the day.

Let me break this down a bit more.

Quelea quelea attacks are greatest in the early mornings and early evenings. But they generally attack through the day.

When you use a drone, it's motion and noise drives the birds. If the farm is not so big....the drone can travel back and forth in a few seconds and will leave the birds no respite. The theory is that if you frustrate them so much they will take a break for upto 30-45minutes. If the drone activity continues, and the birds upon returning realise that they still don't have the opportunity to feed on your rice, Thier frustration increases. If you sustain this back to back. You are very likely going to make the birds migrate from the area.

There is a potential problem though. Many drones that qualify for this task have limited battery life. Typically battery life's are about 10-30 minutes. So you may need to have a number of spare batteries to be able to fly the drone footage hours.

The other challenge is if the area you need to fly the drone over is too large (my rice was on about 50 acres, and I had only one drone); the birds will feast on the rice before the drone gets to them and they will fly to other parts of the rice farm once the drone gets to them. Before the drone gets to the new spot, the birds would have done more damage...on and on..

So get as many spare batteries as you can. And plan the number of drones to match the size of you farm.

I used the DJI Mavic Pro. Unfortunately, it didn't help much. The size of the farm and the population of the birds overwhelmed it. I reckon that of I had 5-10 of that drone I may not have a list a single grain to the birds.
not just any drone, drone are noiseless use drone with ultrasonic device.
or place ultrasonic device around yur farm connected to amplifier, use rechargable battery with solar charger.
2.design a kite that look like a hawk black or red around yur farm to scare them away.
3.study d direction dey descend on d rice farm,by fishnet d finger size used 2 cover pond, hang it high in there direction of descend?u cnt net d whole farm, but may b 5 or 7 places,it will trap alot of them b/c dey fly in a straight line oblivious of d net,u will hav enuff birds 2 eat.

These birds are mean oo. Another strategy I once read is high tech. It involves using electronic rays to detect bird approaching the farm. When detected, it triggers rocket-propelled firecracker that will scare off the birds. This one may be unreacheable for most farmers.
firecrackers even d rocket types is reachable exspecially during d xmas season d noise frm firecrackers will scare dem away.

grin angry grin All along this chains, there exist a lot of missing gaps, needs that need to be satisfied, problems that requires solutions. The youths can be actively and positively engaged without fraud, cheat or lies.

Let me be a little more practical. There exist no ceremony across the various ethnic groups where rice and chicken are not appreciated by the guests. What that tells us is that those who position to grow the rice and chicken will always have a filled or swell time by every purchase made.

That's the drive towards rice. In fact this Ofada rice in particular is a great meal that is served even in Government houses and functions.

Ofada rice is the real premium rice.

I think this is what I need. The mechanism of operation is quite adequate to serve it's intended purpose. On the flip side, will this be able to serve a large field? If yes, how large can the field be??

I think it might be better to grow rice in the rain forest zone instead of the savanna and derived savanna belt.

This will reduce the worry of the birds as the birds are more endemic in the savanna grassland. Also herdsmen wahala is also less in the rain forest zone.

I can give you up to 20 acres of land free for rice farming in delta state rainforest region.

These are fish pond nets. I bought for N6000 each but I understand its sold for N3500 each.

What I intend to do with it? Im not covering the entire rice field, but the idea is to use to make 'volleyball net-like'' situations across the rice field. The idea is that since the birds will usually dive into the field to feed on the rice, they will will several bump into the nets placed above the rice fields in haphazard manners(irregular spaced).

This I presume will cause them more troubles, stress and bodily harms. If a bird scaring strategy does not cause harm or terrify this birds greatly, they will habituate the system and still feed on the rice field.

However, this strategy will be used together with other strategies.. The total net covering will be the best, but my maths points that its initial cost is way beyond what I can 'stake on a new game/new horse'

But what are the dimensions of the net you bought? Like the length and breadth or its area

Hello friends, trust you all are doing great..with the recent border closure comes the Nigerian own rice. Unfortunately, we see rice in the far north, south east, north central and lately I saw Lagos grown rice.

See what you need invest in to grow rice in commercial quantities in the South West!

1. Anti Bird nets..
2. Combine harvester..
3. Threshers.
4. Destoners.

We never serious yet!

yes. It was successful where It was used and I was privy to know it from beginning to end. But it was in lowlands and not upland. I couldn't continue with the experimentation due to financial constraints. But I'm glad I spurred someone to action and he is smiling to the bank now due to increase in prices of rice.

Sad that you ran into such problems. Does it make a difference if it's upland or lowland rice?

Also, how large was your part covered by nets and what was the cost of covering such a space.

4. Birds.

They finished the rice. I was targeting to prevent theor invasion after the grains have formed. Unknown to me that they actually had started the damage long before I thought.

I later realized that the bird suck the juice / fluid that later solidify to make the rice grain. This became evident when I noticed that after processing, the quantity of chaff was enormous.

Once I did the floatation test, large volume of the chaff were floating. Then I realized the hard way that I had been "taken on a long ride".

How do you keep birds away from your fields?

I tried the old cassette method. .

I tried the scarecrow..

The birds have to be scared off early. Cos the feed on the fluids in the rice stem and that will not allow the rice to do well.
