but what I don't get is why the masses who are being deprived of essential services for such ridiculous purposes never rise up in arms at their leaders. What exactly are they personally expecting to get out of such spending?

Religious fervor drives this project specifically. Most of the supports of the project say it's for God. Then you see one person saying its for tourism. What's funny is nobody during 2019 election called out Udom for this dumb project. Not one advertisement about it.

It's easy to tell the people have their priorities backwards. They aren't being tricked like some people would believe.

Akwa Ibom is going to spend 5 billion naira on a 8,500 seat church. Do you plan on sowing your seed at the state church? What should the state be spending the money on instead?

And what concerns you

Your muslim governors in both the north and south spend more in building mosques and sponsoring pilgrimage or quaran recital competitions.

Akwa Ibom is Christian. If you don't like it go and die!

But what I don't get is how projects like this have anything to do with Christianity. How is God served by building gigantic churches even as large numbers of poor families are going without clean water, large numbers of children are suffering from malnutrition, and large numbers of women are dying prematurely in childbirth? This particular Nigerian interpretation of Christianity, where God is best served by erecting buildings he obviously doesn't need, doesn't seem to have anything to do with the version in the New Testament, with all its emphasis on tending to the poor and the needy.

Squandering precious forex on subsidising religious pilgrimages, or wasting funds on building mosques/churches are clearly economically nonsensical, but even leaving that aside, I don't see how any of these activities are compatible with the separation of religion and state, and I'm surprised no one has made a serious attempt to challenge their constitutionality by now.

TMemos:
One of.you guys there needs to sue your useless state governments for building mosques and churches.

An Athiest group challenged the church project in court and failed. They plan on appealing the case. We'll see if all these suits challenging states use of funds for religious matters goes to the supreme court anytime soon.

The court dismissed the legal action against building the worship Centre for lack of merit.

The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Godswill Abraham who heard the case dismissed the matter after eight month of judicial trial and awarded N500,000 costs against the Atheist Society of Nigeria.
“If any other group decide to have a worship centre and they approach government where there is resources government can also build a worship centre for them,” the Attorney General stated.

Lol the comparison is apt. Who else budgeting billions for a chuch? Did the people express their displeasure on social media and at the state assembly? They overwhelmingly voted for these clowns. Dont start making petty excuses now.

The idea for this project was thought up in Udom's first term. He had the ground breaking in his second. Akwa Ibomites were not hoodwinked.
we voted for him?,...so yhu believed that vote count in Nigeria?

Religion is not the problem of blacks, it is something else, something that I don't know yet.

Trump is a Christian? Lolz.... Speaking ignorantly with an imaginary affirmation is a comic relief. You're so funny!

InfoSources:
Stalin and Hitler were atheists too.. Nigeria's problem is not religion.. UAE, OMAN, QATAR, USA, EUROPE ARE ALL RELIGIOUS, THEY HAVE SANE LEADERS. THOUGH RELIGION IN USA AND EUROPE IS DWINDLING

Hitler was not an Atheist.

In fact, the Third Reich was based on ideologues, one of which was that some sections of the old and new testament were inaccurate.

They actually believed Jesus wasn't really Jewish but German of Aryan blood and Hitler himself was the messiah.

What a waste of Public funds on religious grounds

As if the number of churches in the state is not enough already

5billion Naira would go a long way in alleviating poverty in the state instead of this nonsense

Africa is indeed in trouble

Lol these clowns aren't interested in their states development. They're more content complaining about our oyel money developing the north. It take little effort to comb through the budget to find better uses for the funds.

Lol people will be doing pilgrimage to Akwa Ibom. They'll be queing up visit like in Paris and Barcelona. Maybe Buhari should build more mosque and churches to reduce poverty and spur economic growth. This is the best use of our oyel money.
