^^^^ My respects Oga Diordaves, I think the reason for the wide variance in price is the quality issue as we are still far behind in terms of design and quality finish. But it must also be noted that since our local security doors don't incure more expense like import duties and cleaing costs plus shipping charges, all these will be heaped on the consumer of foreign doors.

On thickness, I don't think the foreign doors are thicker, I have tried the weight of one of them door and still thin the local doors are heavier, suggesting to me that the foreign doors may be produced with a lighter metal sheet than the normal 2mm sheets we use in most door works, except the owner requests for a thicker sheet. Another place I think we shall look at is the quality of keys used, most times the keys used to install our local metal doors are not as high in quality as the foreign ones.

Like you asked, there is always that fear of squeking sound and rusting from local doors, it is also good to oil the joints periodically. I live in a house built with local security doors and I remember calling a welder to come weld one of my doors that fell off the hinges. So a strong weld is adviced, there are things I learnt in my company about welding and it applies to security doors. A good quality electrode, metal sheet and good craftmanship on the side of the welder is what gives a clean and strong security door.

Hello ben, long time?
From your experience, which do you think is easier to break into by thieves? The local or the imported?

My experience with local fabricated doors.
i installed one in 2006, by 2011, the painting have started to fade.
And i have noticed some rust coming up. i think the china doors are much better even though they are the same price or a little bit more in cost.
The local fabricated doors maybe durable , but the finishing is poor.

Is it that the local makers does not use rust free paint or could it be the paints are inferior.

Good job Spyder880! Another eye-opening thread.
What is the recommended standard thickness of security doors?

I think most of the rust noticed from some of the local doors is due to lack of adequate
anti-rust treatment. Iron can easily rust and corrode badly when exposed to weather conditions that leads
to reduction of oxygen and oxidation of iron (redox reactions).

It appears Zecca plate (zinc plating) doors may prevent / reduce the chances of rusting. My contractor recommended
we buy zecca plate doors for my house last year, and I agreed with him. I can't remember if the doors are local or foreign.
I may have to ask him.
Stainless doors may help reduce corrosion too.
If local door factories improve the design, durability and coating with anti-rust, they may compete well with the foreign-made.

@ ben, I will use the foreign one only in my front door, a nice design, maybe China, but for my back exit door, local, a few other doors, local. I will also use wooden, Nigerian made doors on some of my internal doors like the visitor's room, the kids rooms and the kitchen store and all bathrooms/toilets.

@Spyder & All, Can you show us more simple burglary proof design please. I need to be able to send a good one to my people back home to build for my house. The welder showed them this attached design at huge cost (N330,000) for 29 windows of various sizes including the staircase handrail.

I don't like the design at all and I don't think it's worth the price quoted. My people will accept anything as long as you claim that it is 'quality'.

How do you know a good quality 1"x1" pipe please? Or better put, how do you know the fake?

Nigeria seems to be the only country where people are prisoners in their homes all in the name of burglary proofs

The metal pipes are 'whiter' in color, looking like an aluminum sheet only that it rusts very fast and it lighter in weight.

@Spyder, Is ur #52 post a metal door as well? Very nice when compared with what I got for similar price!!

Do you mean that the 1"x1" pipe is not the best pipe to use due to rust? Which is the best pipe then? Thanks in advance.

@All, Can someone answer the question above for me please
Re: Pictures And Prices Of Security Doors by spyder880(m): 10:34pm On Sep 12, 2011
@ Demain man, am using a phone now so cannot see the images in the post you referred to. As for 1x1" pipe rusting, all pipes rust equally, I will looka t that quote again. How the job?
Re: Pictures And Prices Of Security Doors by Demainman1: 9:58am On Sep 13, 2011
@Spyder, Thanks for ur response my brother. The job is going o. I was not overly impressed with the security doors the welder made having seen the ones you posted here for cheaper prices. Two months ago I sent a digital camera home and gave instructions that henceforth every fittings that go into the house must me photographed and sent to me first before fixing.

My people idea of quality is well short of my standard. And to think that it is even costing them more is very annoying.

This is definitely the first and also the last project i will do in absential angry

My advice to all potential home owners in diaspora, Save ur money, travel home at ur convenience and do the bits you can. Alternatively do it the Spyder and Brabus way and get progress photos of the project both still and video if possible so you can make necessary correction before it is too late.
