I have always known this for a fact. But instead of Nigerians staging a revolt against this anomaly we seem to be busy chasing immaterial stuffs, watching big brother naija, fighting over PDP and APC and so on while the government brazenly treats us like trash while robbing us blind. How can a country satisfy its international customers while leaving its citizens with an epileptic supply for so many years!? Africa and most particularly Nigeria is plagued with the most inhumane, soulless and very wicked leaders humanity has ever seen. Methinks Hitler is a learner compared to them. Won't it make sense to give this electricity to the nation, and compel the citizens to pay... You impose taxes and tariffs on your citizens, yet 'dash' neighboring nations nearly 24hours stable electricity while your impoverished citizens stay in darkness. There's nothing progressive about this leadership... Absolutely nothing!!! |

Dasuks:The largest percentage of our generated electricity are from gas turbines. Nigeria needs to rapidly divest from hydro power and quickly. Anything can change in the future. Look at Egypt and Ethiopia fighting over the Nile. It only takes France to whisper in the ear of our west African neighbours and they would build a dam. |

RTSC: Building dam this day is not easy it takes too long look at Algeria which built the biggest solar powered farm in the Africa. This was just done in 2 years. The Dam which we started in Nigeria in the 1970s we have not completed them yet |

This report is false and the author is mixing up Naira and dollars. How will Nigeria who operate on a budget of roughly $30bln per year be due over $88bln from neighbours for two years worth of electricity supply. That means our budget can be covered by just selling electricity to neighbours. I believe the 88bln is a Naira amount, not a dollar amount. Both the journlist and his editor should be flogged for this. On another note, I believe selling electricity to neighbours was one of the stipulations that came with damming the river at Kainji. Usually when you dam a river, you come to some arrangement with your neighbours. 3 Likes |

Nigeria dey burn due to insecurity from bokoharam, bandits and Fulani herdsmen yet the imb*cile travel go Mali to make peace. Is all this not madness? Omooba77: Op I am not impressed with this your post. Do you know the origin of river Niger? It originates or starts from GUINEA, passes through MALI, NIGER, BENIN REPUBLIC before entering NIGERIA. We are the last bus stop for the river, hope you know the implications of that? We are able to have light because of the kanji dam we built along that river. Guinea, Mali, Niger and Benin Republic can also build dams along the Niger river that passes their countries but if they do, the kanji dam won't have enough water in its dam to generate hydroelectricity. So to prevent these countries from damming the Niger river in their countries, Nigeria must distribute a portion of its kanji dam electricity to them, which they in turn will pay for. These your post in misleading to people who don't understand this. |

Omooba77: Your figures can't be right. If These countries are using up billions of dollars worth of electricity why don't they just buy a turnkey power station. It will cost far less. Also, what level of economic activity is going on in those countries to justify those huge fees? Do they have a bitcoin mining farm going on? I notice the figures were first quoted in naira and then switched to USD. |

RTSC: Exactly. We have a comparative advantage in gas. The hydro projects are usually 250 to 500 MW max capacity in singular iterations. The course of the Niger here isnt like the Congo in DRC where prospects are in GW. There is a limit to generation possibilities. Our gas potential can match Congo river Inga Dam(all phases) dreams of 40 GW. The oil and gas in the delta can power the world for year for crying out loud... we have something, let's use it. Gas electrification has been the answer for more than a decade now. Btw can we also just call out this article for the stupid figures. Not even Nigeria can afford the bill quoted. All these countries have GDPs of less than 30 billion usd and govt budgets under 5 billion usd. So where is the 80 bn usd number from ? Naija and self deceit sometimes...... |
