No letter of recommendation, let them get it by virtue of hard work. My father did not arrange for me, I passed all my exams by reading very hard, with lantern ooo(and not rechargeable one ooo).

What do you learn from HBS How to manage and make more resources available to carry out specific activities within the economy, if my thots are true, then there should be a solid means of financing before venturing into such. =N= 40M on school is on the high side  shocked

If I have =N=40M, i will rather follow my passion/vision than go to HBS.

I guess you have never completed an international college application before, its not about arranging but everyone requires a letter of recommendation

Why do your children have to go to Harvard? I don't have any such plans for my kids. Anything they like, they can do.
Once I retire from active parenting, I will share my loot with them, and everybody should go their way. I will head for Andalucia and they can go anywhere they like, do anything they like.

I was responding to his comments, of course your children don't have to go to Harvard to be successful but people feel that they're children must go to an Ivy League to properly compete in society and gain access to the elite world they always claim to despise but we all know that this is not the case. Success is more about following your passion and not about where others want you to go.

Personally, I have to agree with @AjanleKoko,

Don't waste that money that you have, it's not worth it. Multiply that money in three folds and then return back to HBS, i.e. if you want to trust and believe, they'll be more than glad to accept you because you'll become a future potential Alumni. Me personally, I think it's just a brand name and it's education quality is standard as compared to other MBA schools. Although, if I have my way, I like to go their Law school.  grin grin grin

It amazes me at people who talk about scholarship, I'm glad someone has said it; they'll all marketing gimmicks,, they're using the foot-in-the-door technique, trying to sell you something that is almost , go figure

It certainly doesn't cost 40million naira to obtain an MBA from Harvard. I have attached below a link detailing their fees structure for the next academic year; http://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/costsummary.html . It will be difficult to justify paying $84000 (13612200 naira) for an MBA if it is going to be used in Nigeria considering there are very few jobs that will pay a salary worthwhile enough to want a Harvard MBA. Having said that, if you were to seek employment in the US, Europe or any of the BRIC countries then it does make sense to invest such an amount on yourself. Having an MBA from such an institution does carry a premium itself and the kind of connection one will have access to can be priceless if one is smart, savvy and knows how to work such contacts (yes connections does matter too in the West).

Since the recession NO ONE IS HIRING, you are better off with an MS in information management systems than an MBA in Finance unless you plan to work for the Nigerian government directly,  Bank jobs are nothing to write home about.  They are not fun and very stressful.

Please explain a little further.  I have an MS in Information Management systems here and get paid enough here but I am planning to relocate.  Information systems is huge in the states because everything is data and system driven so the demand is crazy but I don't know if Nigeria is ready to focus on that area yet.  Your thoughts please,

@ OP (or OP's friend) it seems like you're putting the cart before the horse,

Before you start thinking about whether or not to spend your 40mil on HBS or 'do business' with it, how about a few questions?

Have you applied to HBS? Have you been accepted? If you have been accepted then were you offered any financial aid?
Have you done research on scholarships offered by your state of origin or organizations like the NDDC? What about international grants/fellowships? What about financial aid from your current employer? Have you looked into these funding options?

Why do you want an MBA? Why HBS? What do you want to do with your MBA? If you're just looking for a brand name diploma to brag about or you think that a Harvard MBA will open up bank vaults for you then you're better off keeping your 40mil cos you will probably be unable to put an MBA to good use,

These are the questions you should ask yourself. If you know the answers to these questions your choice will be crystal clear and you won't need NL to advise you.

Also, please don't listen to anyone that tells you an ivy league MBA is useless for Nigerians. Do they know what your plans are? No they don't. Be the best you can be. No one knows what the future holds.

Just my 2 kobo. Good luck!!  smiley

Interesting post,

I guess the main benefit of the HBS MBA would be the life-long connections.

Like other posters have rightly noted, a lot depends on the finances of the OP, and where s/he wants to work post-MBA. Also, if the OP doesn't have any experience in IB/Finance/Consulting, the MBA might be like Bosoms on a hog wink

From my perspective, it clearly doesn't make sense to throw 40m @ an MBA, and begin an uncertain job-search after.

I'd rather trade/invest, then consider doing an MBA thereafter. Heck! HBS aint even #1 these days,

PS. I think those folks masquerading as HBS grads with their 1 wk certificates are clowns. Those programs are excellent, but no one in the west puts those on their profile/resume,

The people who pay a premium for attending Harvard Business School are not silly, for it opens a world of opportunities for their alumni, considering the calibre of graduates who have walked through the doors of HBS. If you are a hardworking person, $84,000 should not get in the way of attending one of the premier schools in the world. Even if you don't make that much money after graduation, the prestige associated with having a HBS degree is priceless. If I were your friend, I would go to HBS if I can afford it; if not, I would find scholarships and get a loan, if possible.
Re: Should I Spend N40m On Harvard Business School Mba Or Just Do Business With It? by abbey621(m): 6:28pm On Dec 08, 2011
There's one major factor to consider and that is whether the poster has relevant experience in the industry he wishes to pursue, if not then an Harvard MBA wouldn't be much of a benefit. With that said, any foreign based degree especially a graduate degree will give anyone an upper edge in the Nigerian job market, you do not have to spend 40 million Naira before you are considered an heavyweight, I repeat it's all about diversity, a degree with years of concrete experience will make anyone a success story in Nigeria, now mix that with a strong networking portfolio and what we get represents a candidate that will excel in Nigeria and abroad. In conclusion, I believe the poster should definitely pursue a graduate degree but one that costs less, Harvard is so overrated, especially if you plan on using the degree to work in Nigeria, focus more on relevant experience and networking and less on the reputation of a school.

My own contribution is this,

If you have to go to Harvard to earn 100k USD per annum, you get issues.

Too many people dey earn more than that with only a 2 year college diploma and 10 years experience.

There are other valid reasons to want to pursue an MBA, but attaining a 100k salary shouldn't be one of them!

MBA is no longer the one way ticket to money land it used to be. This is a valid fact anywhere in North America!

Yes, it is very possible Sirrr. Please start from now and inculcate that competitive spirit in them. Let them go for high school debates, science competitions, quiz and all.

There are many Nigerians who don't pay for the education they get in the West. I have never paid for graduate education in my life. I only hear that people pay millions in tuition fees. I have never done that. I will never do that.  In fact, the government of a certain country pays me every month, and the pay is well above average.

Again, breed them well. I know guys who attended MIT both for undergrad and beyond. They only paid for their flight tickets from Lagos!

I can only reccommend HBS or any other top business school for executive education that will confer alumni status. The advanced management program in HBS is 2 months and confers alumni status and is about 10M naira. Before I can do it I will need to have @ least 100Million naira already. If you are doing this as an enterprenuer then its fine cos harvard is harvard and never underestimate the statement it makes and the power of networking. If u are doing it to get a job or better job, Not recommended.

Damn MBA for 40 million naira is overated unless u have 400 million naira. If you don't have 400 million naira, invest what you have and after some years or months of growth employ an hbs mba graduate.
