The Federal Government is going to consult widely before halting subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has said.

On Monday, The PUNCH exclusively reported that the NNPC might spend N102.96bn on petrol subsidy this month going by the recent pricing template for the commodity.

Findings by our correspondent showed that Nigeria consumes about 57.44 million litres of petrol daily, while the actual ex-depot cost for the product was N206.42/litre.

But NNPC sells the commodity at an ex-depot price of N148.6/litre and had insisted that it would maintain this rate throughout this month, hence shouldering a subsidy of N57.82 on every litre of petrol consumed in Nigeria.

When asked to state how long would NNPC continue to sustain subsidy on petrol, the corporation’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Kennie Obateru, said this was dependent on government’s meeting with labour unions.

He said, “The government does not just look at economics to determine certain things. So the fact is that the government is not supposed to inflict pains on the citizenry.

“And this is why the government wants to do a very wide consultation with all interested parties so that an agreement could be reached and we expect that the agreement will be reached before too long.”

It was gathered that the meeting with labour, which was initially billed for February, had dragged on till March.

Obateru further insisted that NNPC would not hike petrol price in March so as not to fracture the ongoing discussions between government and the organised labour on the fuel price matter.

NNPC has been the sole importer of petrol into Nigeria for more than three years.

A Federal Government agency, Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, on Thursday published the expected new lower and upper prices for petrol at retail outlets in March 2021, putting the rates at between N209.61/litre and N212.61/litre.

It also put the ex-depot price of petrol for the month at N206.42/litre and pegged the expected landing cost at N189.61/litre.

PPPRA is the regulator of the downstream oil sector.

It pulled down Thursday’s template for petrol, with an explanation that the earlier published guiding price did not translate into a hike in pump price despite reflecting market realities.

Whao! consult with who? Same subsidy they told a nation that they suddenly withdraw in 2019? So these criminals have been paying the so called fraudulent subsidy or subsidy under-recovery all along despite all the lies?

Means the NASS have been subtly incorporating these payment into the budget or what? Who have been approving this fraudulent payment? Never in histroy.

How can a country that lacks adequate security, education and infrastructure be spending trillions on subsidies every year?

Even people who spend 300 naira on a bottle of beer and fifty thousand on olosho every night are complaining about petrol price.

It's time to kill that subsidy and all the corruption around it, anyone who doesn't want to buy in Nigeria can go and buy it for 450 in Cameroon. But, we must see what the government will do with the money removed from subsidies.

This administration has never been truthful for once. You increased pump price last by #40 telling Nigerian that subsidy has been removed.
Now you people are talking about another subsidy removal. Which of the subsidy is this one again?

Abeg remove it sharp sharp it benefits the rich more

Two things affect petrol price, international price of crude and current dollar price, it is unfortunate that this government cannot have the courage and hands of fuel importation once and for all , leave business for business men let market forces determine price.
As far as FG keeps importing fuel, refineries will find it difficult to work, because no incentives when it is cheaper to import.

Subsidy is the only thing Nigerians enjoy off our trillions of revenue...it is an evil to remove subsidy, this government must think of a better way to subsidise petroleum so it be efits the masses, not the greedy marketers. We have lack of thinkers and intelligent solutions providers un government. Every government subsidise food, energy, housing for the people.

Or else what?! You will beat your daddy daddy who is the minister for petroleum?
How can they even removed what never existed as Nigerians were told before coming in. With the way things are going, Buhari is even getting worried with how the president is running the country. Meanwhile, prices are consciously been increased in preparation for Dangote refinery cash out. Pump price is to hit #500

It is time the youth flushes out all this criminals who come in different political party branding.

APC is the pro max of PDP.
& his gang of #30k monthly subscription would be deported to Niger.
