Travel / Re: Swedish Admissions And Student Visa by tmed1(m): 7:19pm On Nov 08, 2021 |
I just noticed there is a controversy here concerning whether one should come to Sweden to study. I moved from Germany to Sweden in August 2021 to begin my PhD studies at the University of Gothenburg. Cost of living in Sweden is way higher than it is in Germany. But I'm paid a decent monthly salary by the university; so I can't complain. But why any Nigerian would want to move to Sweden to study social science or business with an ernomous amount of tuition fee is beyond me. Just go to an English speaking country! You can also study in Germany for free (I did both my bachelor's and master's degree in Germany for free). Advice: If you want to study IT or engineering in a Swedish university and you are awarded a full scholarship, you should consider it. But if you study social sciences and you are awarded a scholarhsip, you should still think twice about it. I say this as someone who studied social science. I had to make the best of my degree by building a career in academia. Although I'm happy where I am, it's a big risk I took. Question: Is there anyone of you living in Gothenburg and would like to hang out one of these weekends? I haven't met a single Nigerian since I moved here! 3 Likes |

ikswiss: Interesting! These are the same tips my colleague at the University of Gothenburg gave me, including “Housing anywhere.” My department already helped me place an advertisement on Blocket, stating that I am looking for a place to rent. I will begin to search for accomodation on Facebook groups too. Hopefully, it works out. Thank you for the tips. 1 Like |

Hello Nairalanders I will be moving to Gothenburg for my doctoral studies in mid-August 2021. I am looking for a studio apartment in the city of Gothenburg, preferably close to the University of Gothenburg. If you have a studio apartment for rent or if you know someone who knows someone else with a studio apartment for rent, please let me know. The room rent should please be between the range of 5000 and 7000 SEK. Thank you! |

Hi guys, I haven't been on this thread for long. I am one of the Nigerians that benefited enormously from the German Student Visa thread. Sorry, I didn't come here often to give back to the prospective students (Study life and work didn’t make it easy). I would like to give the following advice to prospective students: 1. Consider the chance to study in Germany a privilege. Germany is one of the few countries that provides the platform for international students (from developing countries) to study without paying a fortune. 2. Life here would not be easy. The point here is, if you are not from a rich family, you would have to work while you study. Unfortunately, in some cases, I have seen fellow international students with misplaced priorities. Some international students (from developing countries) make jobs their "main job", and their study "mini-jobs". Education in Germany is designed in a way that you cannot get rich as a student and succeed in education at the same time. You have to choose one. I recommend you choose a part-time job; this enables you to complete your studies successfully in due time. 3. Learn German. No one expects you to speak the language perfectly. If you spend about 1-2 hours each day learning German, you will reach an intermediate level in 6 months (practice speaking, listening, writing) - In my opinion, speaking and listening are the most important of all. The point is learning, at least, basic German is important to find student jobs because a worker would have to speak German to attend to customers' needs. More importantly, by the time you complete your studies, your proficiency in German would probably be so good that the language barrier wouldn't hinder you from applying to professional jobs. 4. Don't associate yourselves only with your fellow countrymen. Take advantage of the cultural diversity in your respective universities. Respect the culture of your host country and the cultural differences of your fellow students. 5. Once in a while, you might experience racial discrimination (e.g. racial slurs), gender discrimination, or sexual orientation discrimination. Remember this: In life, you will always come across idiots. 6. The first time I was traveling to study abroad in February 2012, the immigration officer who stamped my passport realized that I was traveling out of Nigeria for the first time. Then he looked at me in the eye and asked: "Who are you going there to represent?" Myself, I answered. He shook his head and said no. He asked me the same question again; I said, my parents. He shook his head again, indicating disagreement. Then he finally told me, with a wagging finger: "You are going there to represent Nigeria". I wish all the prospective visa applicants success in their interviews. Congratulations to those who already got their visa approved. By choosing Germany, I think it is one of the best professional decisions we will make because we can invest in an excellent education – and our professional future – without paying a fortune. See you all in Germany! And for those that chose NRW, our paths may cross! 44 Likes 2 Shares |

Obiwannn: Give me a school that specifically wrote JAMB as a requirement. In this case, university entrance qualification refers to a document that qualifies you to get admission into a German University. You can submit: a one-year university transcript, HND or GCE A level, along with your WAEC, GCE O'Level or NECO of course. By the way, I'm not surprised a University requested your international passport or even birth certificate for admission. Look at this picture I took from Anabin. "Anabin gives you the possibility to check, if you have the necessary prerequisites for Bachelor or Master studies in Germany".

lmuhopeful: Everything you wrote was right, except that they do not require your JAMB result. To get admission for a Bachelor degree in Germany, you need a WAEC or NECO result and an HND result or at least a one-year university transcripts (2 semesters). ND is not accepted. |

dantaynya: When you wrote the word "that language", I assume you meant German language. I am not surprised your sister was denied. The German embassy are known to give such reasons for denial of visa, when the applicant intends to go for a language course. Studying a language course in Germany would cost more money. Goethe Institute is already in Nigeria. So, they probably see no reason why anyone would want to go to Germany just for a language course. If she had had a German proficiency of, for example, B1, the result of the interview could have been pretty different. Or if she had been granted scholarship for a language course in Germany, then it would have been possible for her to convince the embassy. If she has an admission letter from another university, of which the language of instruction is in English, then she should use it to apply for the visa. Note: Please don't listen to those crooks outside the embassy. Many of them have not even stepped foot out of Nigeria. 1 Like |

researchQ: As a student, exhausting 1, 8000000 naira in Germany without getting a job means there is something wrong. At least you should have gotten a part-time job within 6 months of living here. Germany could be very expensive for an international student from the developing world: You have to pay your monthly insurance, accommodation; feeding and some miscellaneous expenses would always come around. However, getting a job could be very difficult without having a basic knowledge of German. Honestly speaking, English would not take you very far here. Remember, almost every young German already speak English. So that already puts you at a disadvantage. My point is you have to try as much as possible to learn German. Basic German would give you access to restaurant jobs, factory jobs or trade fair jobs. But highly proficient German would pave the way for better job opportunities such as Telecommunications ( I know a friend that works there), Engineering fields and many others. As a lady, you can work in supermarkets, restaurants or hotels. Even a guy can get such a job too. But the truth is that ladies relatively have an high amount of getting jobs that guys. In fact, if a guy and a girl with the same qualification apply for a job, the girl would be chosen. This is a common practice in Germany. As I said, even the supermarket and restaurant jobs require basic knowledge of German. This is quite reasonable because a worker would have to speak German to attend to the customers' needs. 2 Likes |

I'm really idle right now So I thought of adding some lessons to this forum. I will explain the meaning of different modal auxiliaries in German, which are equivalent to can, could, must, shall, should etc. Kann, Können This word is equivalent to “can” in english. It means to be able to do something. In some cases, it can also signify to know something. Können is used in the plural form while “kann” is used in the singular form. Examples: Expresses ability: Ich kann lesen. (Translation, I can read) As you can see here, the word kann signifies to be able to read. Expresses knowledge: Ich kann Deutsch. (Translation: I know German language) To ask for Permission: Kann ich dein teures Auto fahren? ( Can I drive your expensive car) Kann ich Ihre schöne Tochter heiraten?( Can I marry your beautiful daughter?) Könnte, Könnten This is a little bit complicated to explain but I will do my best to simplify it. Könnten can be used in the following ways. I. Very polite question: If you are trying to ask a question politely, you can use könnten instead of kann. Example: Könnten Sie mir bitte sagen, wie spat es ist? (Translation: Could you please tell what time it is?) You would agree with me that such question would sound more polite than “Can you tell me what time it is?”) II. To express Wish: Now, I think this meaning could be difficult for beginners of German Language to understand. But as you progress in German, you would understand it better. Examples: Könnte ich doch nur fliegen (Translation: If only I could fly ) Könnte ich doch nur viele Geld haben (Translation: If only I had more money ) Könnte ich doch nur nach Abuja fahren (If only I could travel to Abuja) As you can see, all the above sentences expresses wishes. III. To give Advice: You can also use könnten to give advice. Consider this conversation between two hypothetical Nairalanders. Conversation Justwise: Ich muss nach Manchester fahren, aber, ich habe kein Geld. Vicjustice: Du könntest Nairalanders um Geld bitten. Translation: Justwise: I have to travel to Manchester, but I have no money. Vicjustice: You could ask Nairalanders for money. In this case, Vicjustice was giving Justwise an advice by using the word “könntest”. IV. Express Possibility: You can also use könnten to express the possibility that something could happen. Examples: Spiel nicht mit Messer. Du könntest deine Hand schneiden. ( Don't play with knife. You could cut your hand) This sentence implies that there is a possibility that you could cut your hand, when you play with knife. V. Interchangeably with Kann: In some cases, könnten could be used interchangeably with Kann. Examples: Ich habe gedacht, dass du singen kannst. (I thought, you can sing) Ich habe gedacht, dass du singen könntest.( I thought, you could sing). In my opinion, I don't think there are any differences between these 2 sentences. I will explain soll, sollte, müssen, hätte, wäre and würde any other time that I am less busy . P.S I might have made mistakes. This is quite normal because I am not infallible and more especially, I am not a native German speaker. I only wrote these stuffs based on my learning experiences and observation of how German words are used in context. |

Eke40seven: Now, dude, it's high time you keep your mouth shut . I am not bragging but there is no way you will know about this region than I do. I live here! Everything your cousin told you is completely trash. Why the fu** would a student on German student visa go to Holland(Nijmegen) to work when there are enormous job in Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Bochum, Krefeld among many others? I would NEVER use such comparison: Lagos-Oshodi-Ijebuode....What the heck? I am sure my fellow nairalanders in Germany would agree with me that it is not logical to make such transportation comparisons. The train are regular (except in exceptional cases), planned, and too organised to be compared. I see no reason why a student can't live in Kleve and work in Dusseldorf, Duisburg, Krefeld among many others. To general nairalanders, who want to study in Rhein Waal University. Don't let this guy and his so-called brother get you confused. Many of the things is saying with regard to Rhein Waal University is trash. German education system works differently. Of course, ranking matters. But the way he explained it is not the way it works. His cousin should know better. Students from several developed countries such as the USA, Australia, Hong Kong and other European countries also study in Rhein-Waal, not just international students from Africa and Asia. Getting a student job for students in Rhein Waal cannot be that difficult. Common guys! Kleve is surrounded by several big cities in Germany, of which you can shuttle back and forth for free, by using your semester tickets. I keep on asking myself: what the fu** do you mean by going to Holland to get a job P.S: For students of Rhein Waal, You don't have to live in Kleve. You can live in Krefeld, which is just 15 minutes away from Dusseldorf and about 30 minutes away from Duisburg and 1 hour away from the University by train. And for students, whose campus is located in Kamp litford: Krefeld to your campus is only about 25 minutes. |

dcitizen1: @tmed, Alright, let me give you my own experience at the German Embassy then: I got to the embassy as early as I could on the 28th of August 2013. I gave all my documents to the guy at the reception. I had already prepared for the interview by reading past experiences of interview on Nairaland and going to my University's website to learn more about my course information and curriculum. I waited at the reception. By the way, I was waiting in the reception with some other guys and girls(some of them were also members of Nairaland). At this moment, I was praying silently to God so that I would not be interviewed by the old woman, considering the negative responses I had heard about her on Nairaland. Shortly after, an old woman came downstairs to the reception and said "who is Mr......?" My fear had become reality. She said I should come along with her. I suddenly re-gained my confidence. It didn't matter to me anymore who will conduct the interview. After all, I was prepared. I started walking "swaggerly" up the stairs even ahead of her . We got to her office and she asked me to have a seat. Then I mistakenly went over to sit at her own seat instead of the interviewee's seat. Then she shouted, raising her two hands towards me, "what are you doing? I said you should sit here!" Then I laughed softly and said "Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry. I thought you asked me to sit here" Anyway, she started asking me some few questions about my family. It didn't even occur to me that the Interview had started until I saw her writing my answers on her computer. She asked me if I understood German...(I said No but I was willing to learn when I got to Germany) She asked me how I knew about the school Who is my sponsor?...(I said my father) How many children did my father give birth to? What does my father do for a living? What have I been doing after I left school? What do you know about Germany...(Then I told her the numbers of states that Germany have and the countries it shares border with) Then She asked me to mention them She also asked me the name of the city where I am going to study? Then she asked me the name of the capital of Germany She asked me what I am going to study?...(I said International Relations) Then asked me, "what do you know about politics" (Then I started lecturing her on the political system of Germany ) She interrupted and asked me about the structure of the Program and the curriculum...(Then I started explaining in detail) Then she again interrupted me and said "Just summarize it!" Up to this stage, the interview was going well until she asked me one last question She asked me "who is the current Minister of Foreign Affairs in Nigeria?" ...Then I told her, I don't know Then she said "What! You want to study International Relations and you don't know who the Foreign Minister is?...(I replied again, that I really don't know) There was a moment of silence. Then, she started bringing out some papers from her drawer. My heart began to beat very fast. I thought she was about to give me an exam to write. After about 5 Minutes of her looking at some papers. She told me the interview was over and that she will contact when she gets the necessary response. 27 days later, I got a message from the embassy to come with my passport and a 3 month travel health insurance. P.S: She also asked me what I want to do after completing my studies in Germany. I hope this helps 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Eke40seven: Hello, all prospective students of Rhine Waal university of Applied Science, I don't mean to discourage you by sharing with you the information I got during my research on the school but the results weren't too satisfactory. Firstly, the school is ranked 211 in Germany and 4794 in the world! (web ranking though, since the other universally accepted rankings only consider at most the first 500-700 schools depending on which one). My alma mater Unilag is ranked 2897 in the world (you can see the gap). The review by one international student was far from complementary in terms of their treatment of international students (one person's opinion may not be sufficient to reach a conclusion).. I study at Rhein-Waal University. But seriously, what were you expecting? The school was established just five years ago. Do you expect it then to suddenly be shortlisted among the top Universities in the world? Nevertheless, I will doubt that, in reality, UNILAG is better than Rhein Waal: the style of teaching, organization of the university, International Office's and Professor's relation to student can never be compared. I don't know about the review of the international student you mentioned. From my point of view, I see nothing wrong with the University. In fact, famous and credible people come to the university to give speeches from time-to-time, of which, all students of Rhein Waal University irrespective of their nationality can attend. Recently, the President of Germany, Joachim Gauck, was at the University to also give a speech. Rumour even has it that some schools actually lobby Webometrics in order to influence their decision. I know some Universities in the USA whose ranking are around 4000. In my opinion, that doesn't make UNILAG better than them. PS: This is my opinion, as you can see I used the phrases: "in my opinion" and "from my point of view". You don't have to agree with me, just like I don't agree with you. Let's just agree to differ so that we don't derail the thread. 3 Likes |
