A British researcher unexpectedly found and activated a "kill switch" to an "unprecedented" ransomware cyberattack that hit hundreds of thousands of computers around the globe at hospitals, government offices, transportation systems and major companies, including FedEx.
But even with the spread of the malicious software at least temporarily halted, researchers warned that another cyberattack could be imminent and the next one could target the United States.
"Currently the spreading of the ransomware is slowed down dramatically because a researcher found a logic bug in the malware, not because the companies around the world are having good security practice," Matt Suiche, founder of Comae Technologies, a cybersecurity company in the United Arab Emirates, told ABC News on Saturday.
Suiche said the cyberattackers could soon release a new update to the malware, making it more robust and resuming the global infection.
"I'd even say this update probably already happened," he added.
FedEx, other US companies targeted
FedEx was among the many companies worldwide hit by the sophisticated cyberattack that used leaked tools of the U.S. National Security Agency.
A FedEx spokesperson confirmed to ABC News that the U.S.-based international shipper is among the victims of the global cyberattack.


“Like many other companies, FedEx is experiencing interference with some of our Windows-based systems caused by malware,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “We are implementing remediation steps as quickly as possible. We regret any inconvenience to our customers.”
Ryan Kalember, a senior vice president at the cybersecurity firm Proofpoint, told ABC News he is aware of other U.S.-based companies who were affected but have not spoken publicly. He said the virus spread rapidly, making it difficult to identify “patient zero” and attribute the cyberattack to a particular hacker group.....

A massive cyber-attack using tools believed to have been stolen from the US National Security Agency (NSA) has struck organisations around the world.
Cyber-security firm Avast said it had seen 75,000 cases of the ransomware - known as WannaCry and variants of that name - around the world.
There are reports of infections in 99 countries, including Russia and China.
Among the worst hit was the National Health Service (NHS) in England and Scotland.
The BBC understands about 40 NHS organisations and some medical practices were hit, with operations and appointments cancelled.

How did the cyber-attack unfold?
The malware spread quickly on Friday, with medical staff in the UK reportedly seeing computers go down "one by one".
NHS staff shared screenshots of the WannaCry programme, which demanded a payment of $300 (£230) in virtual currency Bitcoin to unlock the files for each computer.
Throughout the day other, mainly European countries, reported infections.

Four Russian aircraft flew near the Alaskan coast last night, including two of Russia's most advanced fighter planes. The flight, which was intercepted by U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor fighters, came a week after Russian military aircraft flew near America's Arctic territory four days in a row.
Wednesday evening's incident involved two Tu-95MS "Bear" strategic bombers and a pair of Su-35 "Flanker-E" or "Super Flanker" heavy fighters. Although the presence of the Bear bombers was not unusual, it was the first time that Super Flankers had been seen off the coast of Alaska. The Super Flanker is an updated version of the 1980s-era Su-27 "Flanker" and Russia's most advanced fighter jet, with an improved radar and powerful, thrust-vectoring engines. The Super Flankers were reportedly unarmed.

According to Fox, the Russian flight was intercepted about 50 miles southwest of Chariot, Alaska by a flight of F-22 Raptor jets already patrolling the area. The Russian jets were unarmed. Although they entered the U.S. Air Defense Identification Zone, which requires them to state intent and destination, the Russians remained outside of U.S. airspace.

The flight comes days after a streak that saw Russian aircraft visit the Alaskan coastline four days in a row. Two of the visits involved a pair of Tu-95MS bombers, while two others involved Il-38 "May"....

The Army has released an image taken by a combat photographer moments before she was killed in an explosion during a 2013 live-fire training exercise in eastern Afghanistan.
Spc. Hilda I. Clayton, a visual information specialist assigned to the 55th Signal Company (Combat Camera), was killed while photographing a live-fire training exercise on July 2 in Laghman Province. Four Afghan National Army soldiers were also killed when a mortar tube accidentally exploded.
One of the Afghan soldiers killed was a photojournalist whom Clayton had been training.
The primary mission of Combat Camera soldiers is to accompany soldiers on deployments to document the history of combat operations.

"Clayton's death symbolizes how female soldiers are increasingly exposed to hazardous situations in training and in combat on par with their male counterparts," the Army said in a statement.
Clayton's name has since been added to the Defense Information School Hall of Heroes at Fort Meade. The award for the winner of Combat Camera's annual competition was also named after her.

Kanu, who arrived the high court premises around 6:20pm in a black Toyota jeep with registration number ABC-46-MU, was formally released to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; a Jewish High Chief Priest, Immanuu-El Shalom and a Chartered Accountant residing in Abuja, Mr. Tochukwu Uchendu, the three sureties who signed his bail bond. Kanu’s lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor and the three sureties were at the high court registry earlier in the day to sign the necessary bail documents. However, in line with an order of the Judge, the IPOB leader was brought back to the court from Kuje prison to sign an undertaken that he would be available to answer to the five-count charge the Federal Government entered against him. Immediately he was formally released by the prison officials, Kanu was received by a jubilant crowd including his relatives. Some people struggled to take photographs with him at the court premises. “I feel good that at the end of the day we were able to effect his release from incarceration and we believe that going forward, we will be able to properly address and resolve issues behind his agitation”, Senator Abaribe told newsmen. Kanu, who had been in detention since October 14, 2015, secured bail from the high court on April 25. Justice Binta Nyako said her decision to release Kanu who is the 1st defendant before the court, on bail, was based on health grounds. She cited an affidavit that was attached to the bail application Kanu filed through his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor. Specifically, the court held that Kanu must produce three sureties, including a “highly respected and recognised jewish leader.” According to the court, aside a jewish leader, Kanu must also produce a “highly placed person of Igbo extraction”, as well as “a highly respected person who is resident and owns landed property in Abuja”. Each of the sureties must deposit N100million. Justice Nyako had in the course of the ruling, asked Kanu to tell the court the religion he believes in, considering that one of the bail conditions would include his production of a highly placed religious leader. “My lord I believe in Judaism”, Kanu replied from the dock.
