I am a survivor of ruptured appendicitis. I started having uncomfortable stomach pains and when i got to the hospital I was initially misdiagnosed for ulcer. So I was wrongfully been treated for two weeks while on hospital admission and my case was detotiorating when the doctors finally discovered what was wrong with me. Initially I thought it was normal appendix until the consultant smelled my breath and was able to know from it that the appendix had ruptured before rushing me to the theatre.....................and so on. Anyways it is possible to take care of a ruptured appendix right here in Nigeria. Pray never to experience such cos its a thin line between life and death and a terrible experience. I Thank God for his mercies and I am for ever grateful to the team doctors who saved my life

Not in Nigeria. Remember, all animals are equal but, some are more equal than others. Translated to all nigerians deserve to live but some deserve life more than others. When its the turn of the common man they will remind us to patronize Nigeria. I cannot phantom why all regions of this failling nation cannot come together pull resources and build a state of the art hospital. I.e Bayelsa,Rivers,CRivers,Imo and Abia can join money and forces to build a regional specialist hospital.
What the hell am I even saying, the workers and management board will chop it to the ground. Most nurses are rude and overbearing and wicked and many doctors are like them. Chei I pity Nigeria ooooo.

There is only one solution. Just one solution!

So what have the medical professionals been striking and fighting when they don't even have equipment to diagnose and eilment. That aside. The second is what about the ordinary that can' t afford to make a trip to Germany. Nigerians Let us purge ourselves and the government should do same.

aribisala0: That is the difference between witchcraft AND MODERN medicine. The witchcraft practised in Nigeria that allows Youth Corpers with little experience to cut people open and when they kill them as they often do bamboozle the hapless relatives with breezy bluster. The same withcraft that allows some clowns to parade as gynaecologists even though they never saw let alone touch a colposope and still use Pinhard stethoscopes LWKMD grin.
How many doctors will allow youth corpers operate their mothers??
I still say that at the end of the one year of housemanship,a serious doctor should be able to perform an appendectomy. I am assuming that the doctors looking after the dame are highly qualifed, experienced doctors. It is therefore a big shame that she had to go to Germany.

you can say what you like. which is typical of Nigerian Doctors. Authoritative sweeping statements without any shred of evidence.
We see these doctors here all the time ,wise and knowledgeable in their own eye but ultimately untrainable and impervious to new ideas. The question is whether one would allow a dear one be operated on by such a person.Yes ALL footballers can take penalty kicks but if my life depends on it I know who I will ask Technically performing an appendectomy is quite simple from a surgical perspective. There is more to it than surgical technique.Firstly the diagnosis of appendicitis is NEVER 100 % certain until the abdomed is open and even then it may turn out to be something else especially in a woman. Next there are anaesthetic complications and failure of equipment. Very few if any centres in Nigeria conduct clinical audits so we don't know how many patients are killed by iatrogenic causes. The number is probably high.Just like Nigerian Mechanics and their crude tools the thinking is if I get the car started and moving I did a good job.
The attitude of Nigerian doctors is arrogant and resistant to scrutiny of their practice but crucially they are almost invariably devoid of current knowledge, paternalistic to patients and very unethical.
We are talking of a country where you CANNOT BE SURE what you are buying when you purchase penicillin or other drugs. It is not until a doctor leaves Nigeria before he realises he has been in darkness. You will rarely hear a Nigerian doctor admit to not knowing because intellectual humility is an alien concept

THANK YOU SIR.
They don't try to brush up, one mumu doctor once told me that there is nothing wrong with nurses who handle the sick without gloves touching my son's finger that he sucks(I complained about it to him so he can educate them). That who will die of sickness will die touched or not. Now he is in the US schooling again to enable him practice there.I hope he is learnning better there.

You too Sir/Madam,can say what you like. Afterall, this is a forum for people to air their views but you are missing the whole point. People, especially our leaders ,travel abroad to treat relatively simple conditions. If more money is put into our health and education sectors,we would have first class doctors and state of the art hospitals. That way, they would no longer have to go out of the country. No doctor, even in America is the custodian of all knowledge. They too, ocassionally mis-diagnose patients and people still die even abroad. The point though is that nobody should have to be flown abroad for appendicitis. We have capable doctors and hospitals that can deal with it. I am not saying that Dame should have been treated by a corper or house-officer.There are several consultant surgeons in the country.Nigerian doctors are not that bad.

aribisala0:

True it can be treated in Nigeria but not true that it can always be diagnosed by examining the patient. Sometimes the diagnosis is only made after opening the abdomen as it may be IMPOSSIBLE to distinguish it from other gynaecological emergencies occasionally. The only hospitals whose failities I will trust to do this (Exploratory Laparascopy) in Nigeria are maybe owned and run by oil companies. They have electricity and blood banks I will believe. I will not (by choice) receive blood from any hospital in Nigeria .Anytime you open the abdomen you MUST have Blood nearby in case you need it. Unfortunately many Nigerian "Surgeons" have a different mentality

Aribisala0, you started off as an intelligent person but inevitably, you've been exposed for d ignoramus you are. What d hell is EXPLORATORY LAPAROSCOPY? Our nigerian trained medical students trained by Nigerian doctors (who in ur view, are arrogant empty headed glorified quacks) would not spit out such pus. Two things are obvious from your above summations:

1. You're no doctor, which isn't a bad thing. You probably work around a hospital and u pick up medical jargons which u do not understand, hence d misuse of terms.
2. You have a deep seated beef for (Nigerian) doctors, probably borne out of insecurity or feelings of inadequacy.
3. You had d opportunity to go abroad and suddenly u feel you're better than ur much hated Nigerian doctors.
4. Number 3 gives u a hard on, literarily.
5. I said 2 things, but hey, sh.it happens

Now let me educate you mister, emptying bed pans in an American/European hospital does not make you a doctor.

Take pride in your work, every health care worker is important and an expert in his field. give Nigerian doctors some credit. Yes we are hampered by inadequate facilities, poor power supply (we take deliveries wt d aid of torchlight even in federal hospitals), inadequate man power etc, but we give our best to our patients. It means we have to work harder, rely on our clinical acumen more than we do on gadgets; but hey we do that. And our patients are better for it.

I'm a lady, so I'm not going to use d F word. But aribisala0, picture this. The middle fingers of both my hands are extended at d metacarpophalangeal joints, while the other fingers are flexed at same joint. You have my permission to spend d rest of d day decoding that.

And the ignorance of NL goes on. Know doctor or hospital staff will give you information on a patients condition except you are a direct member of the family and definitely not on the phone. If you believe any such claim, you are really ignorant!

Exactly. Let alone give out information to the press. Also, no hospital spokesperson would speak in anoynimity.

I am not sure money alone is the issue though it might help.Cuba has a first class health care service with Life Expectancy rates among the highest in the world and this has been achieved on a shoe string budget in the face of dire economic sanctions. In fact Venezuela a country with a shockingly similar profile to Nigeria in terms of GDP oil production corruption, drug trafficking etc sends their President to Cuba a smaller and poorer country dependent on Venezuela for subsidized petroleum.
Cuba is the best example of Optimal use of resources.I do not have the time to check right now but it would be interesting to compare per capita eexpenditure on health between Cuba and Nigeria.
Maybe nobody should be flown abroad for appendicitis I don't know and have no strong view on that. It is possible non-medical considerations informed the decision and no one has told us she had appendicitis anyway so that is a guess.

I'm disappointed in the first lady's medical team. Perhaps they have lost touch with clinical practice. Some of them may be contractors. Appendicitis is a clinical diagnosos. The appendix ruptured because of negligence and misdiagnosis by her physicians. Continuous medical education is compulsory for all medical doctors.

Possessing or not possessing knowledge is no reason to feel humbled or its opposite. No one knows everything and you seem to think you should. Rather than lament over wounded pride reflect on the positives of this exchange everything happens for a reason i think.
Anyway I do not know why you directed such hostile and vitriolic personal remarks at me when you do not know even know me.Your grudging "mea culpa" stops short of an apology or genuine contrition and only concerns itself with your ego and loss of face ignoring the unprovoked calumny.

Not sure how you know her appendix ruptured and the reasons why
Sometimes it is impossible to reach a diagnosis of abdominal pain in FAT women such as the first widow until the abdomen is open. Nigerian doctors may be afraid of the political consequences in a place like Naija especially if her doctors are from another ethnic group or a million other non-medical considerations.

Besides who said she has appendicitis, what is the source of that info
Re: Patience Jonathan: Surgery For Ruptured Appendix Was Performed by bokohalal(m): 12:34am On Sep 09, 2012
No matter that the appendix was ruptured. That surgery can be performed by any hospital in Nigeria. My brother had same some years ago and he did not travel even to Lagos or Abuja. He did it sucessfully right there in Benin city.
