Lagusta:

Can a civil engineer change over to an electrical engineer after graduation?

Can a CARpenter repair my CAR??

Can bruce willis act in a yoruba film

If the answer to the above questions is YES... Then try using a dental drill to do an exploratory laparotomy!!!!

...i meant maybe by undergoing some courses...he could turn a medic

I don't think so ooooo, I believe he has to start all over again, its the same anyway, a medic that wants to be a dentist has to start again in dental school.... Remember, a nurse can never be a doctor until he gets his MBBS!!!

Don't worry, dentists are also competitive, DR. Sid is a dentist, he just loves music, he also consults, and u can travel out to SA, australia, canada, etc

@lagusta looolz, u no nice oh, hehe.
@afol4dam they say after dentistry, u can go back for two yrs and get an MBBS, but I don't think that's true unless u got some mad connects, or u go to a private uni like igbinedion. That said, it is hard to do, same applies to a medic. And dentistry is 6yrs oh, not 5. Dental and medical students do same course until 500L where they r seperated. In essence they do pathology and pharmacology, but in addition, they do oral pathology and oral biology in dia 400L. Plus d pay of Medics and dents is same, and dents got more time for themselves than medics.

Lagusta, if u ask me tho, I fink ur skool's system is kinda harder sha.

i believe for any of these proffessionals mentioned above to become a doctor, they have to go back to school to study it likewise the doctors too. None of these professions are encompassed in one, they are different.

Never knew dentistry is a 6yr course.... We don't hav it in unilorin shaa

There are some medical specialties that can still guarantee a formidable social life: community health, psychiatry, all pathology specialties and some of the surgical sub-specialties I.e radiology, ophthalmology, and ENT...

And yep, u got it right, our courses are harder, imagine writing all pathology in a single day: 800 MCQs and 17 SAQs

And @Afol4dam 'Dentistry is the branch of medicine that is involved in
the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of
diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity, the
maxillofacial area and the adjacent and associated
structures, and their impact on the human body',

The only courses you won't be taking are obstetrics and gynaecology. Otherwise you will take major courses with General med students up to part5 or 6 (depending on the school) + you will have to take a lot of 'Dental courses' on their own which makes it kind of tasking.

You have the option of specializing in Public health dentistry, Endodontics,
Oral and maxillofacial pathology, Oral and
maxillofacial radiology, Oral and maxillofacial
surgery, Orthodontics, Pediatric dentistry, Periodontics,
Prosthodontics, and General dentistry. There
are other dental niches such as Oral medicine, Dental
aesthetics, Dental implantation, and Orofacial pain and
temporomandibular disorders, some of them are
recognized as dental specialties in other countries.

It depends on you though but dentistry is not only concerned with 'just teeth' as the layman might believe but advanced specialty in some aspects of dentistry will encompass the maxillofacial skeleton and the neck. So it all boils down to choice, you have a lot to choose from and don't have to feel inferior to general med doctors.

Will be posting more later, until then.. Cheers!!

its very possible 4 a BDS to do extra 2 yrs and write MBBS and bcome a doctor afterall, we do d xame courses until yr 5. bt i dnt think dats even necessary as a dentist is already a specialised surgeon. i did nt knw dis, i used to thnk dentistry was jxt 'teeth checking'. if had i knwn i'd av entered 4 BDS since i was 15 instead of w8ing extra 2 yrs bcoz i stubbornly wanted MBBS which to the glory of God i finally entered 4. dentists are doctors 2 so dey shuldnt b descriminated.

@superclem are u a dentist or a med. doctor?

MCQs like someonew said means multiple choice questions, just like the objective in WAEC..... BUT!!!! There is negative marking: I will explain later...

MCQS are made of one-in-five, true or false, matching and causal relationships...

One-in-five is the usual option A, B, C, D, and E, if u get it, that's +1, if u fail it u get -1/5 as negative marking, but if u don't attempt it, u get 0 as usual

True or false gives u a statement and u have to state whether it is true (T) or false (F) if u get it, +1 if u fail it -1/2 if u don't attempt it 0

Matching is just like primary school quantitative where u match a statement with the correct answer, more common in pharmacology, same scoring with true or false

Causal relationships give u two statements where u have to state whether they are related, not related but still true, or one statement is false or both are false, also common in pharmacology, same scoring as true or false

The bottom line is, DO NOT ATTEMPT A QUESTION THAT YOU ARE NOT SURE OF!!!!! That's what makes u a good doctor....

Well, u missed that SAQ part....

The essay part of exams are usually divided into two, SAQ and LAQ....

SAQ means "SHORT answer questions" therefore your answers should be short BUT concise...

LAQ means long answer questions, your answers should be long and detailed, but please don't waste time ooo, cos there is always no time!!!

Please, don't let us discriminate among ourselves, a dentist is still a doctor, in fact, there are a lot of diseases that are related to our oral cavities, which even a general surgeon knows nothing about...

I remember when a consultant maxillo-facial surgeon came to our class once, we all laughed that "what does this dentist want to teach us, abeg our teeth white like close up jare"
But he asked us what dental caries mean, we all failed the question, cos we told him it means decay of the teeth, now HE laughed!!! He told us it means HOLES in the teeth... There were some other stuff he was just yarning that nearly broke our cranial vaults!

Since then, I always respected dentists!!!!

Yes. U do junior posting in med, surg and anaesthesia. At least that I am sure. Then I guess u do other dental postings #NotToSure tho.
@lagusta

We don't have the SAQ and LAQ system u mentioned. We just have MCQ and theory, but in surgery clinical exams, we have Short and Long case.I guess different skools run different systems as long as its in accordance with MDCN. Like I'm aware that in LUTH path and pharm class is done in 300L, in LASUTH it is done in 400L.

Wots all d talk abt medics and dents. Is that even a discussion, dentistry, medicine, optometry are are all doctors. Just different areas of specialty. Dentists even hv more time for themselves than medics, and d pay is one and the same.

We also do clinical and practical exams too here... Practicals in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pathology. All except biochemistry is steeplechase exam, while biochem is the real titration like WAEC chemistry...

Clinical exams are done in all the clinical fields except community health, where we do only steeplechase and picture tests. In the other fields, we also do long and short case except at MB level, where we do OSCEs... For surgery and paediatrics, we do picture tests too, with the osces, while
in medicine and O&G, the pictures are integrated into the OSCEs...

@Lagusta, please I want to understand what you mean by sub-specialities of surgery and how is radiology for example a sub-speciality of surgery. Please I will like a detailed and encompassing explanation. I really want to understand sub-specialities of surgery in general and how radiology is one of them. Thanks in advance.
