Billyonaire: There are no rules to becoming a millionaire, cos a million naira isnt really money anymore. A lot of people say they havent made a million before. When the real truth is, they have been making millions but havent really saved a million. Many Nigerians spend more than a million in months without knowing, even the Okada riders, bus drivers etc. Because they fail to maintain an account of their expenses and income. Becoming a millionaire, is very simple, but staying a millionaire is what needs rules.
Mr billyonaire if u go back and read the original post u will see that the issue of saving has been taken care of so if you have other tips pls share rather that repeating what has been said, except u are trying 2shed more light on some of his points.

nice write up dude, however let me bring to your notice that in nigeria, things happen to people differently. we have thousands if not millions of people with similar story to yours but negative outcome. am surprised you mentioned university because the OP never included neither formal nor informal education in his tips. now coming from abject poverty background, struggled to the university, then you worked for only six months and saved enough to start an engineering consulting company, i am very skeptic of your story, no offense, an average nigerian(poor background) university graduate's age subtracted from 33yrs.... i have questions in my head but firstly, could you please tell the house how long your consultant company operated to generate the fund for another construction company that also generated the fund for a real estate investment within that period from your graduation age to 33yrs?

more~ am a self made millionaire too, but i dont just buy the deceptive idea of get-rich-quick-tips! every idea has process which also requires hardworking, focus and time to materialize.

are you a lawyer sir? the bolded got me thinking!

Seriously do you think that a Nigerian who knows how to become a millionaire will come online to share it for free? He will not even have time to log on here to write it down.

I am right when I stated that. A lot of motivational speakers keep telling you rules on how to become a millionaire, but refuse to tell you exactly what to do to become a millionaire. My initial reactionary post on this was direct. I simply debunked any claim on any rule to becoming a millionaire, which I consider a very humble vision. There are no rules to obey to become a millionaire, cos being a millionaire simply needs no rules. People should teach you "what to do" to make millions NOT "how to become" a millionaire. Do you know how many motivational writers become "millionaires" by telling you these stories and selling copies ? And do you know how many people spend fortunes to buy books and read these books yet millions eludes them ? Being a millionaire requires "what to do" "what trade to be involved in" "what service to render" when these are done, nothing stops the money. How ever, you need certain rules to "stay" a millionaire without blowing it all up on cars, ladies, clubs etc.

[quote author=inspire101]1). Have a skill: I see most people moving about with Bsc without any skill….
Some even go cap it with Msc from Uk or wherever but Unfortunately, they were not taught that employers don’t pay u 4a certificate….

******************************************************************************PLEASE SIR, ARE YOU SAYING THAT IT IS A BAD IDEA TO CAP YOUR Bsc UP WITH Msc FROM UK? AND ALSO WHO TOLD YOU THAT EMPLOYERS DONT PAY YOU BECAUSE OF YOUR CERTIFICATE?
MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY APPLYING IN SHELL WITH SECONDARY SCHOOL CERTIFICATE AND MARVELLOUS SKILLS.

2). Create a product/service: Create a product or service and charge a fair rate….

******************************************************************************CREATE A PRODUCT/SERVICE WITH WHAT CAPITAL?(dont forget you are referring to a person that is not yet a millionaire, let us assume the person is poor)

3). Save as if your life depends on it: Listen my friend, to arrive too soon is to arrive too small. Don’t be moved by the pressure to look like the Jokes and the dejis. Live within your means. Paying bills without paying yourself is the number 1 secret to financial suicide. There will always be a reason not to save…so do Save, save and save at every opportunity you have.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++*******************************I AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS ONE. But bear in mind that you can only save the money you have!

4). Invest Wisely: A fool and his money would soon part ways. Avoid funny schemes. Run away from “Get rich quick programs”. High yield investment programs come with high yield of loss and disaster. Your race is a marathon and not an 100meters dash. Seek to understand the dynamics of investment before getting involved.

******************************************************************************GOOD POINT!
5). Know God: Understand that there is an infinite intelligence that oversees the affairs of the Universe. That you and I have his spirit within us and we can achieve a lot more that we are achieving if there is an alignment with this source. That he that dwells on our inside has no religion or skin color. That he hears our deepest thoughts and aspirations. Share your thoughts with him, whatever you conceive him to be and I am sure he will strengthen your desire.

******************************************************************************BEST POINT EVER!

whether i "think" the op is a millionaire or not doesnt change who or what he is. i'd rather put my energy "thinking" of ways to move my biz forward than spend my time "thinking" abt what the op is or what he is not. i keep an open mind. take in info, apply the useful ones and discard the ones i perceive arent useful and that dont align with my values. rather than condemning what the op has said generally, why not pick out the points u agree with and the ones u dont agree with and share with us(JUST LIKE EZEGOZIE HAS DONE). that way we will all learn from u. so dont keep sounding like a child. live up 2 ur name and "WISE UP"

pro01: @ Topic,

Nice tips, at least on paper. But it takes a whole lot more to become a multi-millionaire in countries like Nigeria where meritocracy is an alien concept and where the rule of law is absent. However, one can never go wrong by developing skills that can be commercialised, or creating products or services that solve problems. These two principles are timeless. The problem, unfortunately, is that only a very small minority of people have the requisite innate abilities, discipline, and 'luck' to achieve these.

absolutely and succintly agreed to what you aptly asserted my brother, but apparently all these can work in a country where people are given the equal opportunity to prove their worth instead Nigeria is one unfortunate country that kills one's dream, they dont just believe someone can pull some innovative strings out of the ordinary w/o being naively sceptical, they dont just get it here.

@991, It didn't come cheap...writing the details would be writing an entire book. For the thousand or million others who didn't make it, if they press on they will eventually. In my case, i did attend the university but being educated does not exactly mean getting a university degree. I have achieved more by research especially via the internet, meeting, interacting and learning from other people more skilled and informed than I am in other parts of the world, having several sleepless nights learning new soft-wares and reading tons of books.
After 6months..didn't have enough money saved..in fact i had nothing but my skills fetched me little so i was never without money to feed. Just after then, i took up the task to help manage the construction of a small church of which a friend and i shared the 120k offered for the task whose duration was about 6months. while on that i met a friend who's father own a construction company i was opportune to be in a meeting with him where i offered free advice on a project of theirs..subsequently i helped them design the structural landscape of the BRT depot in Ketu free of charge and told him i had just registered a co. and would be glad if there are opportunities..long story short i met his father later in the month and my co was awarded a job (i guess in reward of my gestures) that made me my first million. Please note that even though i was hungry i didn't ask him for a job else that's what i would have gotten. For consulting, while others complain, i hlep find a unique way to solve flood problems in Lagos and not too many people do that. I ran both companies concurrently i used to be a one man army doing consulting and just put my house in order about 3 years ago, I once sent a letter to the Lagos state government on how a Mega project of theirs in Lekki-Epe Axis was prone to flooding by the Atlantic ocean and that caught their attention and was called upon to prove it. For real estate..i am investing along with other friends who are doing quite well. We are into property redevelopment. It wasn't easy i tell you. I guess that's where the supernatural counts.

Some years ago, a man called me and asked me that what did i have in plan about my future, i said i want to travel out of this country. He now confuse me not to travel because there are opportunity in nigeria. Immediately, i left his place, i abuse this man, i even swear for this man. He advise me to deal with recharge cards, phone, line etc. Today, that is what am doing, i make nothing less than 150k in month, besides i just move to my house (3 bedroom flat) with my family.

What pains me with nigerians is that most people lose touch with reality once they change status. They immediately suffer from the "if they can't eat bread, why not eat cake syndrome". That is why someone that walked shoeless to school does not understand why students would protest petrol increase to N150 per litre.

Believe me there are no hard fast rules to becoming a millionaire. It is not necessarily how hardworking you are, not how much money you start with, not even how brilliant or skillful you are. Even the so called closeness to God is not a guarantee for success. Now check the list of the top 10 business men in the world, then check also the top 10richest men businessmen in Nigeria(not government workers or people fronting for government workers), you will see that those 5 criteria do not necessarily apply.

yes to be a successful businessman requires skill but not any skill, the acquired skill must be relevant to your environment. Most courses and skills taught in our institutions are irrelevant to the Nigerian environment. That is why most graduates are unemployable without retraining.

About savings, businesses are not started with savings. Start up capital is mainly sourced from banks and family members and friends. It is after you are able to start up a business, stabilize the business and start posting profit, that you can talk of saving. It is the high interest rate of close to 20% that makes starting a business difficult in Nigeria while in Japan the interest rate is less than 5%. Also do not forget the multiple tax regime in Nigeria, or you did not put tax into consideration?

The most important thing in business is ideas, innovation, education, hard work, sound money management, leverage, finance and the X factor. The X factor can be called luck and it does not depend on what religion or God you worship.

I sure can't resist the pull of the crowd grin,

The 5 point agenda works alright, its the 'how' 'what' and 'why' that are the issue. It's like saying the way to become the richest man in the world is to have a patent over the sun. Yep, it sure will make you king. But how do you do it, how do you also protect the patent over the sun?. wink

There is something like this in 'soft' psychology where someone can almost accurately predict your character. The only problem with this prediction is that it is true for everybody.

In conclusion, I would say that the Poster has successfully drawn the audience to at least thinking in the right direction. This I feel, is the gold nugget in all of this.

Anyways, without player hating I say: "excellent post" to the Poster

Not really. . .they will only leave you to the money making because they know no mata how rich you are/become,you will still go back and beg them to help you spend the money

Now can anyone teach me how to become the world's richest man?? Cos i'll only stop at that. . .

Government contracts don't count in this thread; anyone would be much more than a millionaire with those. This thread serves to showcase one's ability to see way beyond the presented; to probe the obvious unrelentingly and be bodacious; sometimes taking financial monitor-able risks; I never take risks I cannot recall at some point: once, I realised I had been sitting on oil, so to say, and had a pittance to show for it, an idea developed over time, on how to earn far more than I was making. My idea was big, my idea was bold, my idea would be a game-changer, so I was not surprised when no one loaned me the amount I needed. It was too late, because, I had become restless of my position, only ever visualising the good that was to come; being a dreamer has helped me in most walks of life; so I did a crucifiable thing, I sold my capital - to get into the circles of the kind of finances I needed for my project. I monitored every move, lost what I considered, a fraction; that didn't deter me, forged on, sited my business in a new developing area and waited. Call it good fortune or what you will, my new business location is far more income-yielding than the supposed 'paradise' I left. Note, it all started with an idea on a Sunday morning I was seeing red...desperation helps too.
