How 2 Accept a Loss? How would you react to a game that you had bet on Over 2.5 Goals, ended goalless? These were the pre-match statistics: Montreal Impact last 5 MLS home/home & away mixed games: Goals For: 14/9 Goals Against: 10/12 Total amount of match goals: 24/21 (average goals per match: 4.8/4.2) Matches over 2.5 goals: 3 out of 5/3 out of 5 **************************************************************************************** Dallas FC last 5 MLS home/home & away mixed games: Goals For: 6/4 Goals Against: 11/9 Total amount of match goals: 17/13 (average goals per match: 3.4/2.6) Matches over 2.5 goals: 3 out of 5/3 out of 5 The only previous head to head finished 2-1, although that was the reverse fixture. Maybe this match isn’t a perfect example, but from these statistics, I thought it would be reasonable to expect at least 1 goal. A year ago, if an expected Over 2.5 game had ended 0-0, the immediate gut reaction feeling of injustice and frustration may have made me bet a higher stake on the next game to get back some of the money that was “rightfully” mine. Today, do I feel disappointed, frustrated and a sense of injustice? Yes, but no way as strong as I had previously felt. Now, I’m able to take a deep breath and say “it’s OK” and accept it for what it is; a temporary blip. How am I able to accept this and say “it’s OK”? I’ve only been betting on football for over 5 years, but during this time 1 of the major lessons I’ve learn’t is how to accept an unexpected result, e.g. an anticipated high scoring game, ending 0-0. When betting, I believe it is realistic and correct for the bettor to keep focused on making a gradual profit over the long term. This isn’t easy, but patience, discipline and a good staking plan are key to success. If you want a lot of money now, it can either go 2 ways: 1. You will win a lot of money or 2. You will lose a lot of money. Unfortunately it’s in our nature to think short term, that’s how we are wired I guess. So it is important to remember it’s near enough impossible for the bettor to get a “strike-rate” of 100%. So with this in mind, as long as you are regularly finding value, have a good staking system and you can see your betting bank balance on the up over a certain period of time (not short term),the only reaction to losing 1 bet should be, no reaction. Maybe it won’t be just 1 game that didn’t have the desired result; just as football teams go through good and bad form, so do bettors. And when, not if you do, there will be no reason to panic. Just accept it for what it is and remind yourself of the big picture: profit over the long term…unless of course you are always losing and going further and further into the red, then maybe it is time to change your system!
