Since Xavi left, Iniesta has dropped deeper in an attempt to replicate Xavis function, but to no avail.

The football you are playing is not anti-football, but it is just not tiki taka. You still keep 60%, sometimes 70% sef of possession. This is not antifootball, it is just the same level as other top teams like Chelsea, Arsenal etc.

To play tikitaka, you need 250-270 passes per game from your 3 man midfield. That is an average of 3 passes every minute.

It used to be:

Xavi - 100 passes
Busquets - 80-90 passes
Iniesta - 60-70 passes

For Spain, it needed to be uber tikitaka as Spain did not have killer strikers like Messi, so the best way to protect themselves was to ensure they don't lose the ball. That's why Xabi Alonso was added to increase the possession football even further. The 3 man midfield was:

Alonso - 100 passes
Busquets - 90 passes
Xavi - 100 passes

Now you have a situation where Iniesta has dropped deeper to reprise the Xavi role, but his ppg stays at 60 passes, even dropping to 50 passes this season.

So you have:

Busquets - 80 passes (even dropping these days to 60 or 70)
Iniesta - 60 passes (even dropping to 50)
Rakitic - 60 passes

How do you expect to play tikitaka out of that?

The truth is Enrique does not have the raw materials to reprise the old tikitaka. Playing to the so called strength of your skipper is non-existent because your skipper does not, and has never had the tikitaka strength you think he has.

Unless you get a tikitaka specialist like Thiago back, you are better off continuing with a more counterattacking style. That is the same job Modric and Kroos are being asked to do at Madrid to capitalise on the speed of BBC, and they are not complaining about it.

The coach definitely gets the buck of the blame. But, I wouldn't blame him for Suarez sending wide the ball from a very decent angle, Rafinha's inability to place a simple pass nor Messi's failure to drop back in helping out when in trouble.
