Nigerians do not like good things for themselves. Additionally, they are too poorly educated, informed and very unenlightened to know what is best for them.

Since politics is a numbers game and a large percentage of Nigerians are illiterate, only few are properly educated and only a tiny fraction is enlightened, many are controlled through imposed abject poverty, while a few majority are intimidated, subdued into forced into submission the eventual choice of the people will always reflect the type of people and country that we majorly are!

FROM MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE (NOT YOUR OWN! MY OWN !!) :

-Free Primary and Secondary Education (needs serious improvement)

-Subsidized Tertiary Education from BSC to PHD (needs serious improvement)

-Opportunities for Innovation especially epcially in ICT and general technologies.

-Cheaper Professional bodies and platforms to take engage with, contribute to and grow your professional profile.

-Well paying Civil Service Job (this needs to improve across board)

-Low property and other taxes and levies (for now)

-Initially, subsidized cost of fuel (which just changed)

- Positive outlook and ability to take life head on regardless of challenges. Struggles that refine the best out of you or bring out the worst out of you. (This needs to change. We do not need all this self imposed hardship to bring the best out of us. At least in human nature I hope not).

- Large market/population for business. Fair and growing entrepreneurial ecosystem.

- The feeling of being home. Foods you know. Places you know. Comfort and convenience of a country and a people that you know their way of life. Freedom of being with people who look like me, think like me.


- The Nigerian Passport and die hard spirit of resilience to be able to shuttle between Nigeria an over sea country as a citizen of two countries and legal permanent resident of others.

-Cheaper access to more natural foods, Whole Foods, plants, etc. when compared to many other countries.

Of course the negatives are more:

-Failing government institutions
-Confused government policies
-Insecurity and increasing crime
-Corruption, stealing, looting, and embezzlement especially in public sector and by politicians
-Poor social amenities
-Horribly poor public safety
-Falling, failing, outdated and unfocused educational system.
-Poor quality of environment and aesthetics
-inadequate and Poor public recreational facilities
-Inadequate encouragement and incubation of technological hubs and scaling of ideas from design to production especially of equipment
-etc etc

However, I still strive to look at the bright side.

While people have called these useless, I think it not bad , but then not progressive either. Most of the population that use the internet are the productive group. The educated and working class. The category of areas is fine, but if you note there is nothing on CREATING OR PRODUCING OR ADDING VALUE TO ANYTHING.

Nothing on innovation or entrepreneurship or value creation. It is still all geared towards CONSUMPTION. Is it the People or is it the System/Government or is it the Government/System influencing the people not to have hope? Or is it the people that are just ignorant about what is beneficial to them? Please these are open questions and have nothing to do with ANY political party or ethnic group in Nigeria.

A quick review though doesn’t provide in-depth analyses and insight because of course there are other things that could be significant beyond this top 10. But looking at these one is forced to think and imagine that if these were the top 10 things we were curious about in 2024 (with over 100 million active internet users in Nigeria I.e about 1/3 of the population), then we might need to encourage people to spend time and resources on the internet for more progressive things and topics and shift our priorities to beneficial things.

Of course people have the right to browse whatever that interests them.

False. Note I am not attacking you here. I am making general statements. What educated and enlightened people have observed is that people and animals mistakenly get hurt by the fangs of the snake even WHEN THE SNAKES ARE DEAD. YES. Dead snake fangs and venom remains poisonous even when the snake is DEAD. A dead venomous snake needs to be handled with care! Recall the fangs of venomous snakes are like needles connected to their venom stores/glands. If you have open sores and wounds (e.g while preparing the snake the bone of the snake injures you) and their venom get into it you will be hurt really bad as the venom gets into your blood stream. Or if you handle them poorly and the fangs puncture your skin you stand the chance of getting hurt really bad. First thing to do with a venomous snake is CUT OFF THE HEAD!!

There are stories where people stepped on or got injured by the fangs of venomous snakes that had died and rotted leaving only bones and the fangs. They got really really sick due to residual venom molecules.

No mind the stories wey people Dey talk. Those are lies and false stories that are common in Nigeria. One of the reasons why I say a lot of the educated Nigerians are only barely literate. They can only read and write.

Less than 10% of Nigerians are truly EDUCATED and a less than 1% are ENLIGHTENED.

Others misleading stories like this ARE SOCIETALLY DANGEROUS and include:

-The bone of of a snake is more poisonous that the fangs.

-Too much oil causes malaria.

- When you press your nostril and oil deposits come out from the pores of your skin, it is Eguisi.

- Stroke patients should never be injected with needles otherwise they will die.

- Eating Mango and drinking garri leads to death.

- Bathing with salt and drinking salt water at 12 midnight cures/ prevents Covid

- Sharing messages to 100 people on your WhatsApp contacts will bring good luck and not sharing will bring bad luck

- Female genital mutilation keeps the girl child chaste and holy and not sexually wayward.

- The sound of a girl child’s pee indicates if she has been having sex or not. (ONE OF THE MOST USLESS THINGS I HEARD IN NIGERIA AND FROM SOME NIGERIANS)

- When a woman struggles and says no to sex she actually means “Yes”.

- Very many psychological manipulations of so called pastors and babalawos and imams/Alfas and new age religions.

- Believing that APC and PDP and LP , etc are different parties and that the parties matter when it comes to corruption, poverty, abuse of power/office, oppression of the poor and bad leadership in Nigeria.

For some it is a combination. Recall three of the popular fundamental principles of human motivation. First recall that human action and/or inaction is controlled by:

A. Inherited human Basic Instinct, and

B. Taught and Learned Accumulated Knowledge and Reasoning

In both cases:

1. The goal of every living thing is to become a full fledged life in itself.

2. In becoming a full fledged life and experiencing life, the human brain will always first want to seek out the option/choice that will provide the highest possible pleasure from the most little effort, spending the shortest time and under the most little to no cost/risk. This is how the human brain makes choices based on instinct. First choice of any human brain (male or female) is wired to take decisions this way.

3. When something is pleasant, the human brains wants to experience it again and again and again and again wanting higher and higher doses or the pleasant feeling of satisfaction. Hence be careful what you derive pleasure from. Make sure it is something uplifting and progressive and productive..

It is left for us to choose wisely things we develop interests in and getting a hold of our brains. But it is also worhty to note that as physical strength and health differs from one person to another of the 6 billion plus people on earth, that is how mental/emotional/psychological health and strength differs. Some people are easily addicted and some are not.

My mum will be visiting me in Canada for the first time by January and she is 69 years old. She will also be going UK to see my younger ones. I need advice on the basic necessities that will make her stay worthwhile. I do not want to a miss thing paticularly as regards keeping her healthy. Any suggestions on where to get her suitable clothing in Nigeria for that age travelling to a cold region for the first time? Guys, I need your kind suggestions.

The concern of people about the season for this journey is justified. Winter limits movement, make pains like rheumatism and arthritis worse and the cold leads to other health vulnerabilities. So do not mind the method they have communicated this but their concerns ARE VERY VALID.

So what are the factors to consider

1. Weather: Get her a good jacket, neck warmer, winter hat, and shoes, she can arrive with, From Tejuosho/Yaba markets if she is in Lagos if she is not, then get her something very good from a close by market. Please DO NOT LOOK FOR SOMETHING FASHIONABLE. LOOK FOR SOMETHING PRACTICAL . You are in Canada. I am too. If you haven’t experienced the cold, you won’t know. No matter how it is explained, you won’t understand until your ears, eye, nostrils, fingers, toenails freeze and suffer frost bites.
Be prepared to get her something better in Canada when she lands in Canada. I stay in the Prairies. No cloth sold in Nigeria can match -45 degrees Celsius. You would have to use multiple layers.

2. Food: please do not fill her bags with only what you miss in Nigeria. Let her bring things she will eat. They are healthier. Plant based. Unprocessed. The spices and seasonings she is used to. I am not saying she shouldn’t bring stuff for you but let her bring things for herself too. If she has spices and other natural herbs she takes, let her pack them too. Prioritize her comfort and wellbeing over the spices and things you miss in Nigeria.

3. Bills: Be realistic and ready to know that cost might go up. Of course this isn’t an issue I hope. It is hoped you have planned for her to come. Know that you might run your heaters, water, etc more hence expect some 100-200 CAD Spike in total bills.

4. Checks, Confirmation and Enlightenment: Inform her about the way of life of Canadians or any other important information around where you reside. Luckily, Canadians are a bit more laidback. Brief her if she is traveling to Canada for the first time. Go through all the essentials and let those helping her prep ensure she has everything she needs. Inform her about keeping her passport and travel documents and cash in the same purse/bag/ and keep those close to her and secure. Brief her about avoiding making quick “ stranger friends” at the airport. She should not accept anything or leave her bag with anyone, etc. etc.

5. Health. Let her visit a doctor in Nigeria. A quick medical check. Then like someone mentioned she should treat Malaria and Typhoid. ALSO IF SHE IS ON MEDICATION, please let her BUY AS MUCH AS WILL LAST HER OVERSEAS. Remember that the Canadian Healthcare system is SHIT! They have the equipment and tech, but their administration and availability are limited. If there are things like BP machines she uses, let her pack those too. They are portable. Get her good supplements when she arrives. Vitamin D, and others for bones and general health. I have seen and know of cases of aged folks in Nigeria who got a lot of relief and health benefits due to the health supplements they take from overseas.

6. Essentials: Please let her bring her creams and moisturizer, lip balm, etc. A lot of people bring Shea butter. But this has a high freezing point hence does not do much good when you go out. I bought and mixed Castor Oil and Flaxseed Oil. Then I mixed them with some glycerin, and a 2k perfume oil I bought in Nigeria for fragrance. This is what I use. Why do I use this mixture. I realize with freezing point of about -17 to - 20 degrees Celsius, these oils stay on my skin under the cold. Sunflower oil also has freezing temperatures of -17 degrees Celsius. Yeah, don’t mind me, I had to ''science'' the hell out of the issue of making my own appropriate homemade body oil which I used as cream/lotion. The beauty of science. Note I avoided almond oil because of its strong smell but it has a -18 freezing point hence should have been a good oil to rub as well. Other local creams freeze under the harsh Canadian Weather.

7. Fun: Winter is “too somehow” or “one kind” as we say in Nigeria. The walks we see in Summer and the Grandparents taking kids to join the bus in summer mornings will not be so easy. Of course, if the cold isn’t so bad where she is, she can perform these duties that they so love doing for their grandkids if any. Some things to do include:

-Walk children to the bus
-Walk kids back from the bus
-Mind the Children and baby sit
-Go out and visit close friends and family members
-Attend Church programs, outreaches, and simple volunteering.
-Visit downtown and major malls
-Evening neighborhood walks if the weather permits and conditions are not slippery. (AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AVOID THE DANGEROUS SLIPS AND FALLS !!!!!!!! It is usually bad for aged people)
-Visit Nigerian Restaurant like Global Pot, etc. if in the Prairies.
-Visit Canadian Cafes and Restaurants
-Take Winter Photographs and Videos
-Take the kids sledding with their Toboggans if you have kids and they have toboggans.
-Visit farmers or flea markets if any in your area.

If you have other things, you have thought of for fun, you can add them to the list so other people who have parents and parent-in-laws coming can also get ideas.

Local Flights overseas they also do this. Both in Canada, the UK and the US where I have flown locally, they do this. You only get premium service in First/Business Class. You EVEN HAVE TO BUY THE FOOD ON BOARD. Otherwise they give you complimentary Pretzels or Cookies, and a disposable cup of juice and/or water.

I just flew Air Canada, Vancouver to Toronto. Na the same thing.

Nigerian local flights give those snack packs that come with water and pastries and candies and gulp size juice boxes. BUT BELIEVE ME THAT THEY DO BETTER IN TERMS OF IN FLIGHT SERVICES .


Hardly will any airline in the UK,US or CANADA give you that snack box for a 45-50 minutes flight.

Of course we must not copy Oyibo. Just because they choose to be foolishly greedy, seek maximum profits and torture their people does not mean we have to treat our people the same way.

Hence, I am glad that those inflight services remain on many local flights in Nigeria.

I am at looking at the business ecosystem here in Canada. Hopefully trying to see if I can ever meet a group of Nigerians who share the vision of building wealth and dominating a particular goods/service sector.

We do quite well in Tech. But we have the Indians, Pakistanis and Chinese/Japanese in these areas doing a bit slightly better. The Indians for instance have taken control of many HR Departments, Supermarket chains, Gas Station Chains, etc. Indians will likely take over the health sector, as well. So even the medical field, we still work in silos. No Unity, no group effort and props, nothing. We are jealous of each other, afraid of each other, hate each other based on beliefs, do not trust each other.

Apologies for elongating this matter. I met a Nigerian Canadian during my last flight back to Canada. He told me he was once the President of the Nigerian Association in that Capital City within the Province. He mentioned how while he was president he fought and advised and begged Nigerians to stay close to one another in particular areas of the city. With such dominance they will have the numbers to control and choose council men/women, dominate voter strength, etc. He mentioned that he failed woefully on this objective because the moment a newly arrived Nigerian hears that another Nigerian lives close by, they will get a house in an opposite part of town once they are ready to settle down, claiming they didn’t want to live close to their fellow Nigerians. When they first come they won’t mind a Nigerian helping and showing them how to settle down and so on. But once their leg strong for ground (as we say), they move away from fellow Nigerians INTENTIONALLY. Even those who have been around for a while in the city, they do not want to live close to their fellow Nigerians.

The Dislike/Hatred; Mistrust; Preference of Individual Success vs Group Success & Respect; Evil Competitive Spirit; it will take perhaps a new breed of Nigerians to unite. Problem is that the children of many of these diasporans are also told to avoid other Nigerian kids.

Overall and within the Global Audience, it is advocated that the discipline is expended to cover:

b. Health (Municipal/Community/Public & Occupational/Industrial Health/Hygiene)
c. Safety (Municipal/Community/Public & Occupational/Industrial Safety)
d. Security (Physical. Virtual is usually handled by ICT in many organizations)
e. Environment (Environment, sustainability, ESG, etc.)
f. Community (Host Community)

The risk management framework is similar for the above listed areas and these areas are interrelated and hence easy to manage wholistically within a single Department of an organization, with a Director heading such. In the professional and academic aspects of the discipline, it is also advised that the above are integrated into the fundamental foundational curriculum of the discipline to ensure that professionals, students and practitioners have basic knowledge of managing risks as it relates to the above six(6) areas of the QHSSEC discipline.

If you are in Nigeria, do it with ISPON. I recommend ISPON because they are also recognized by bodies like National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria (NISCN), BCSP, CBCSP, and Safety Professional Bodies of some countries that Nigerians migrate to through studies, permanent residency or professional/work permits/visas.

Besides, ISPON gives you the pathway to get certified and become a member in line with the ISPON Regulations I (2024).

Furthermore, if you say HSE 1,2,3 is expensive what will you say when it is time to upgrade to NEBOSH IGC and NEBOSH IDP to be competitive in the local and global market?

Note that a personal tutor will also charge you for his time. Unless such a person is jobless or his job is not demanding at all.

Be realistic. Anyone that can take you on NEBOSH IGC is vast enough in the discipline and hence most likely busy as a professional as well.

Just at a crossroad, I currently work for an FCMG in Nigeria currently go home with about 1.7m monthly as income after tax, also have some other benefits, I got my PR since 2022 and did my soft landing with my family and came back to Naija 2023. Likewise, I know you will be able to get another job in Canada. But what if the pay is not as good as Nigeria? Consider the risks and keep plans against these.

3. An additional benefit is, you get to stay with your family and spend time with them. Nurture and raise the kids with proper values, etc. You also get to enjoy the serene environment.

4. Unless of course '' You dey flex for naija, chop, enjoy, bases, booze and rock life'' which is not readily available in Canada. Canada might bore you.

I am a realist. And I have presented the realistic things that should influence your decision. No BS or sugarcoating.

However these are the factors that I have noticed:


1. Nigerians do not change their mindsets about the various tribes and ethnic groups they left behind in Nigeria. They carry the CURSE of ethnic and tribal division overseas. Now the tribes and ethnic groups should have been capitalized upon to produce a single front overseas . “WE ARE NIGERIANS AND THOUGH TRIBES AND TONGUES MAY DIFFER IN BROTHERHOOD WE STAND TO SUPPORT OUR BRETHREN FOR OUR COMMON GOOD, GROWTH, PROGRESS, SUCCESS AND INTERNATIONAL RESPECT, RECOGNITION AND REGARD”. Nope. They never see it that way. Instead they are even divided not only in tribe and religion but also based on churches (denominations) they attend. All claiming to worship the same God o !!!

2. Many of the the Nigerians abroad are ONLY literate. They can only read and write and they managed to Pass IELTS. They ARE NOT WELL EDUCATED NOT TO TALK OF BEING VASTLY ENLIGHTENED. You can take the monkey out of the bush, YOU CAN NEVER TAKE THE BUSH OUT OF THE MONKEY.

3. Every Nigerian wants to succeed more than his brother/sister. THEIR COMPETITIVE SPIRIT IS TO OUTDO YOU. Not really to provide comfort for themselves and their families and their old age, but to outdo you and rub it in your face. The competition is wild hence the hustle is wide and wild as well. To an average Nigerian success is only when they can “PEPPER” other Nigerians with their wealth overseas.

4. Overseas the weather is not always super good for a lot of the Nigerian Type Fun. But even when the opportunity comes, it is the “clique” that will meet and have the fun. I am not saying invite the whole Nigeria in diaspora. But deep within you know you know why you invited Femi and Abayomi and James you just met yesterday but invited him because he drives the 2025 Land-cruiser. They select you based on how they perceive your success at home and actual or potential success abroad.


5. Overseas you work and do your duty. No one listens to your excuses. Your boss does not give a shit about “God Bless you Sir”. You mess up you are gone. Nigerians know this and hence are more dedicated to work. That rubbish play we do in Nigeria and spend Government and Company Time doing nonsense, does not work overseas. They monitor you and YOU WILL GET FIRED IMMEDIATELY. “Sir please it was the Devil… I don’t know what happened…it is my village people… sir please forgive and forget , God will bless you…Sir please my mother was sick…..’’ will ALL FALL ON DEAF EARS. The useless excuse we give in Nigeria claiming we are hard working people will get you sacked and if your negligence leads to loss of health, life or property YOU WILL GO TO JAIL AND E GO SHOCK YOU! Hence they (Nigerians) double their hustle and don’t mess around with work. You go broke here you go homeless. Because of how serious work can be, they have little time to play.

6. Nigerians take on more than they can handle home and abroad. The financial burden becomes so huge that they can hardly have time to enjoy life. I fear for some as they take on multiple jobs, barely have time and are handling multiple demands from home.

7. Nigerians love to oppress themselves. They witnessed this in Nigeria with the wealthy and politicians. The secret desire of every Nigerian is to be so wealthy and rich that they can oppress others, disobey/break the law and nothing happens and have people running after them and for them to cater for their needs, while they live a life of luxury. Classism is very fat and healthy among Nigerians. It is fed well and nurtured well. Not even the core North and the Fulani elite could escape the enticement of classism.

I will add more ….But let us prep to head off to work. It is 6:37 am here in Canada. And snow Dey show people tiny Shege … not much Shege but a bit of trouble, especially driving on icy roads. You just have to be extra careful with everything during winter.
