Is it bad to cross your legs in church?

I'm a catholic,I noticed each time I cross my legs in church which I do unconsciously, the wardens always tell me to drop them... Was in church with my mum today and she told me the same,I asked her why and she said I was in the presence of God, that I know but could it be that bad
I obviously know that but for christsake I'm not sitting in front neither is my dress short

learn to follow simple instructions even if you dont agree with them, as long as they're not inimical to your being.

The bible did not tell us how to sit, stand, or lie or walk. But It says every wrong doings is a sin, and not all sin leads to condemnation. If you feel its wrong you should stop it. But I think we should try to know if this isa tradition.

Health wise, it is not advisable especially for women to cross their legs for some of these reasons: Poor circulation: it is said that this can interfere with heart problems and cause pain in the legs. Hip stability; The hips have a natural aliment. crosing your legs is not natural. This can cause wear and tear on the joint. Back pain: can cause lower back pain. The spine has three natural curves and when you sit crossed legged some tend to shift their body weight taking the spine out of ailment also.

Crossing of leg is a habit. Some people feel more comfortable doing it. Others no. Some believed it's polite. If we look at the side effect according to Doctors, its best to stop such habit that could damage one's health.

in the nightclub, you're expected to cross your legs or sit with your underwear in free show, but when going to church, people would like to be able to concentrate or at least follow the service without unnecessary arrogant distraction.


you can cross your legs at the ankles if you cant do without it, and if there's enough leg room for that, but it still wouldnt necessarily portray a good image of you.


when in rome, do as the romans, is the standard practice.

It's not exactly a universal sin like stealing, but could be contextually or culturally wrong. Somethings are wrong but not exactly sin e.g late coming or wasting water.
Its usually considered wrong and disrespectful to cross one's legs in front of a superior. Like one may not do so in front of his boss, commander, teacher, parent or superior. My advice is that you be more conscious of your body and its language to folks around you. It's called loving others as yourself or so.

They also frown at it at my former church so pls dear try not to do it wen u re in church b4 dey bite u.

learn to adapt to your environment- if your church doesnt like you crossing your legs for whatever reason, then just sit properly when you're there for the one hour or so of service.

you can cross your legs all you want after you leave.

Just like what happened to me on 31st. I don't normally do this cross-over service thingy, but the whole house was dry and my sis asked me to escort her to a church nearby and since there is no harm in praying any way, I followed her.

On getting there I sat down cos my thighs were aching (the after effect of exercise), it was few mins to midnight and cross-over prayers have started in earnest. . I sat down, head bowed and eyes closed deep in prayer, I was engrossed in worship, not even listening to the prayer point raised, na so this man came from no where, tapped my shoulders and asked me to stand up, u need to see the look on my face. Actually I had tears in my eyes so there was no doubt I was having a personal time with God, no one told him to leave me be. I sat down all through the 30mins I spent there.

The question is; do I need to stand up for my prayers to get to God?

I was in church yesterday with my cousins that go to a private Catholic school, and after recieving Communion, I knelt and prayed when I got back to my seat, then, when I finished, I sat down and crossed my legs(out of habit - I don't usually sit with my legs straight), and my cousin pointed and said "don't do that!!!!" and I asked why.. He didn't tell me why...

Is there a particular reason?

In the Orthodox Church it is supposedly taboo and considered to be very disrespectful to cross your legs during mass, because it is too casual and too relaxed for being in church. For example, when you do sit in church, you should sit attentively, with your feet on the floor, ready to stand.

In our North American culture, while its not really taboo or a "rule" some people still see this as proper etiquette for mass and considered respectful.


So if it is not a biblical standard for instructions in the worship places, where make a law or an issue out of it. Whatever we cannot preach or teach anywhere, anytime is not the Gospel. I think a Christian sister can cross her legs if she knows she sits carelessly. This in itself is a way of preventing some kind of "exposure". Very soon, some worship places will start telling pregnant women not to sit down because they want to pray to God. Any pregnant woman can sit or stand up while praying IF she feel comfortable with it; there is no law against such. Let's not make too much out of leg crossing in worship places.

I agree with Plappville and others. On a small hand, I feel what snr brother Image said as I'm also a proponent of doing what is contextually appropriate - though it may not be a universally wrong action.

I was in a hotel lounge with hubby in athens few yrs ago. Very large seating area separated from the action in the main lobby and no one else was there but us. In usual americana fashion, I put my feet up crossed on the center table as I typed on my laptop. Before I knew it concierge showed up and kindly asked to put my feet down as its not allowed (or maybe they were just "racist" seeing this small girl relaxing like that j/k).

Anyways, whether my feet were up or down was of no consequence to anyone else in an empty lounge area - but in their culture it was a rude & disrespectful thing so I adapted and did as Greeks did when in Greece - for the sake of peace.

Thanks for d last bit jare. Why should we import culture n traditional into worship in church.

Some things can be offensive really, like chewing gum and making nasty noise with it. But which wan be crossing of leg again.
