It is hard for me to imagine legitimate companies in the West complaining of low government patronage.

Unless you are a military defense contractor, then this seems very strange.

Aren't cars a consumer-oriented business? I don't see Toyota or Honda looking for any government to buy their products. Instead, they look for regular folks like me to buy what they are selling.

While it is a good gesture, it is not a must. Please, let us not go that pathetic route. I beg in the name of God. Let us not go there. Anytime somebody talks like this, it attracts negativity to Innoson and that's the opposite of what you're trying to achieve. . . I hope.

i feel sad about it but again i believe their marketing strategy is very wrong. at least 30secs advert on CNN,AIT, Channels tv will do the magic. by the time they use the 'nigerian indigenious motor' tag, it will work. frankly speaking i only know IVM from nairaland. they govt may not buy but citizens will.

if their target is mainly govt contract, aiming for house of reps budget for new vehicles, they are on a long wait. NNPC distributes only honda and toyota to his MD. they need to work hard and not just wait for government to come to them just because they are indigenous. they shouldnt forget nigerians have reservation for made in nigerian goods.

As far as I'm concerned, they ain't doing it right. You need to sell your product through a competitive marketing approach and let him stop complaining about the govt. He has to give to receive, I once heard on here that every customer that comes through the door, he has to be the one to approve the order. How true that is,idk.

Ikengawo: BUT the government isn't the end all be all of business. Innoson is unknown outside of Anambra and the internet.
They have done no real advertizing or branding.

Nigeria has the biggest movie industry in africa, and the movies constantly borrow cars. If innoson used this opportunity for product placement wisely, nobody would be making noise on whether or not they need the government because their vehicles will be seen all over the world. They can also lobby CNN, Al Jeezra and BBC to show their plant and the vehicles, or conduct auto shows. Something as simple as signing tonto dike to be your official brand ambassador makes nigerian papers in a heartbeat.

Innoson has been, so far, advertised abysmally.

America's motor industry didn't take off because of the government, it took off because of advertising and marketing.

Well said. What that company really needs is a good team of trained corporate strategists.

They paid the same or am I missing something? Dude all I am telling you is any business whose model is government patronage will die a natural death! INNOSON should make in roads into West Africa, ourBanks have, glo is expanding across West Africa, Arik Air is building her route network into West and Central Africa, INNOSON should do the same!

If it were a case of asking government to create a scheme to allow employees under her books to buy these cars with government guaranty, then that is understandable not this talk of government come buy from us thinking!
Yeah, you really missed something; MTN paid $285 million for only Gsm licence while your hard working Globacom only paid $20 million for all encompassing Second National Carrier which includes Gsm licence et al. so what do you think happened?

In Naija we lack proper marketing despite a retinue of jobless MBAs and others supposedly specialised in business/marketing etc. I have no doubt he's got great products.

I have visited their websites a few times. It leaves a lot to be desired. In an unforgiving business environment like naija, I can understand that he may not have the latitude to "dash" out many free cars in the name of marketing.
But have a good website, reliable info-line and a few jobless Engineering graduates to provide detailed info on products.

Also, they should target the lower middle classes: like 100-200k monthly people by creating products (family sedan, saloon) under 1.1m and provide adequate finance options. If Tata can produce cars under $2000, Innoson should try somthing similar (at least under $5000).

Imagine 30k x 36 months option for a 5-seater 1.6L car. Sponsor or part sponsor programmes like Nigeria's got talent. Why can't a winner go home with an Innoson SUV instead of KIA?

Japanese cars have been outselling american cars on american soil for the last decade.

If innoson want to get more customers they need to step up their game and give nigerians clear reasons to buy their cars over other cars. Competitive pricing and all that.

We most understand that Innoson is still at its infant stage. The government have a big role to pay if this company is to survive. Check the history car manucaturing industries all over the world, especially the American car and how the government guide them geliously.

Advertising is highly capital intensive and I know Innoson most be trying to break-even especially competing with world class auto gaints and having relay on imported iron and still. No thanks to Ajaokuta and others.

Will I buy Innoson car if I have the money? Sentiments apart, my answer is no. Why because:

1. Safty should be of altmost concern. Yes it has got all the local certification but are this people highly experienced in that field to give such certification?

2. I sure want to study those that are using it for years to acertain how durable it is being a new auto in the market.

Really tired of typing. But I think government use of the cars for some years will realy boost our confident to patronise it and I pray Innoson automobile will live long after Owners death. unlike most Nigerian companies.

These guys should stop moaning. Apart from Nairaland, I've not heard about this car anywhere else and I live in Lagos. This is not a charity organization & you can't force people to patronize you. The auto industry has been there for a century & you have to fight hard to get your foot in the door. They should

-Advertise their products aggresively - TV (incl CNN), radio, billboards.
-Change that ugly logo. Nigerians are a very stylish & discerning people and they pay a lot of attention to things like that.
-They should think less of profits for now. This is a long-term investment and they have to establish a presence first.
-Give us juicy offers such as financing, 3-yr warranty & a fantastic customer support.
-Focus more on commuter buses and taxis for now. People need to start seeing them everywhere.

Trust me, Nigerians know good things when they see. Word-of-mouth will push their products even more as soon as they've established a presence & good reputation.

Get your story right. The deposit of $20million which CIL paid in 2001 alongside mtn and others for gsm was forfeited to federal government because it paid the balance with unacceptable conditions.

CIL transformed to glo in 2003 to get SNC licence at $285million. So glo can be said to actually pay $305m

Re: Innoson Vehicles Complains Of Low Govt Patronage! by Nobody: 7:52am On Jan 31, 2013
Dede1: Upstart revenue intensive company such as INNOSON needs massive supports from government including some form of subsidy. It is too early for people to demand handouts and vehicle donations from INNOSON which is trying very hard to break even in an economy without structured strategies such as Nigeria’s economy.

@Ikengawo
Please stick with what you know about USA’s economy, the government and automobile industry.

Too early you said? Then it's too early for government patronage.

When MTN came to Nigeria we didn't wait for patronage. When Adenuga started GLO, he was forced to compete on a level playing field with MTN forget that he is local.

Seriously, that is not how business works. Innoson has to prove self first. Has to prove that it's ready to compete and will compete..

PEUGEOT had to patronize the government first back then.. Even tho PEUGEOT was being assembled in Nigeria, it still had to give out free stuffs to government officials..

There is nothing government can do about Ino unless the company is ready to put self out there...

It's a private investment and it's left for the investors to decide how they want to go. All out by self or keep waiting for patronage.

goon, trying so hard to tribalise this serious issue. why dont u ask how many of those vehicles orji has purchased? are u aware that last year the retardeen's minister, Aganga went on air to declare that MDAs has been banned from importing vehicles? how far has this instruction been followed?
Re: Innoson Vehicles Complains Of Low Govt Patronage! by splendore(m): 8:20am On Jan 31, 2013
if our politicians choose these locally made vehicles over the imported ones, they may not get the desired kickback or cut they would've have made if they are importing. So the reason for low patronage is not because the vehicles are not good enough but because of endemic corruption in our system . They should go ahead and do aggressive marketing, with time all these will be a thing of the past.
