There was nothing bad in what Gen. Diya did. He said he pleaded with Gen. Abacha to release the arrested Generals.

It was an arranged coup. Why was Gen. Bamaiyi and other involved Generals not arrested and tried?

On the Bamaiyi issue, the reason he wasn't arrested and tried is simple. He reported the coup to General Abacha (he was shocked to find out that Abacha already knew about it). It was General Abacha that ordered him to "play along".

According to law, if you have knowledge of a coup, you should report it to the Chief of Defence Staff/Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff, or your commander (for military personnel). If you are a civilian, you should report to the police. Failure to report constitutes a crime. Bamaiyi reported the coup plot to Abacha.

I know that bigoted comments are part of the usual game posters play on nairaland, but courage and cowardice have nothing to do with ethnicity. On that night, people from different ethnic groups exhibited bravery (eg Diya's CSO) and cowardice. It had nothing to do with ethnicity.

WAM?:
Who is alive who is dead

God bless you!

The most important things at the moment are:

1. Abacha is dead

2. Diya is still alive.

3. Abacha died before Abiola.

4. Abiola family got 2 oil wells from Abacha to compensate and persuade him from demanding for his presidential mandate. He refused till death. The oil wells still belong to the family.
Not a single ibo man - dead or alive has an oil well.

5. Obasanjo has ruled this country longer than any other person.

6. Obasanjo ensured that an Igbo man will never smell Aso rock by denying the Igbos of their traditional position of VP knowing fully well that the VP would become president in a short while.

7. Otedola (a ordinary businessman) took the most vocal and powerful northern politician in this dispensation and ruined his political career forever.

8. The north is banking on the Yorubas to have power in 2015.

9. An Igbo man will never be president.

10. APGA is dead. The Igbo party is gone.

What of other Generals that were involved and not arrested?

Stuff I heard in 1997 that were corroborated at the Oputa Panel.

1) One guy was lamenting the lamentations of his life! If he had been in Abuja, he would have led the team that arrested General Diya. Unfortunately, he took permission and came to Lagos the week before the coup. The guy who led the team looted enough money from Diya's house to finance the furnishing of his new flat at 1004.

At the Oputa Panel, Diya filed a petition for the return of huge sums of money that were looted from his house.

2) I was told how Diya's CSO ferried him to safety. There was a huge manhunt for both of them. I was told that the DG SSS had to radio the CSO to tell him to hand over Diya, because this is a "military matter".

At the Oputa Panel, I heard the story of how the CSO ferried Diya to safety. It was exactly the same story, except, Diya's CSO was a military officer, not an SSS operative.

3) I was told about a journalist who was arrested at the time and locked in a dungeon. I was told that the man ran mad.

At the Oputa Panel I heard the exact same story, only, this time, I heard that the journalist was last seen wandering the streets of Benin Republic, muttering to himself.

I didn't believe all these stories in 1997 (I still thought it was a set up), until I watched the Oputa Panel, circa 2000.

SERIOUSLY DIYA SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHOT INSTANTLY WHEN HE WAS BEGGING

WHY SHOULD A GENERAL BEG AND CRY?

THE SIMPLE TRUTH IS THAT HE WAS AFRAID.

This thread has really shown why Nigeria won't move forward any time soon. While people all over the world are working to create a better future some dumb folks have started tribal 'e-bashing' over events that happened in the early 90's.

This is sad cry

there was no coup - everything was a set up! abacha wanted to become a democratic president and he knew to become one, certain high-powered military officials had to be removed or jailed. how do you remove a bunch of para-military officers - then he used general bamaiyi to concoct a fake coup.........nicolo machaivelli used this method several times in his lifetime.......they roped general diya into this mess

if bamaiyi and the other hausa groups really planned a coup, they would never have trusted diya. they would never have told diya about it. they only told diya they have a 4-point demand they would like to present to abacha - of which diya told them to go ahead. he never knew the so-called demand was going to be reported as a "coup". why would a bunch of hausa generals involve a yoruba general in their coup to oust a fellow hausa? think people and stop exhibiting the characters of a rhesus monkey.

after the plot, many army officers were arrested. obasanjo that wasn't even in the country throughout the drama was also arrested. these people were the same people abacha thought would prove difficult to stop his bid of becoming a democratic president. the plan worked to the T until abacha slept with indian prostitutës. he overdosed on viagra and his heart collapsed and he died!

I love General Adisa just for the way he says it as it is.

He was asked if he begged Abacha.

He said definitely he begged Abacha. People may say whatever they want when they are in the comfort of their homes, but when you are in that situation, with tanks, heavily armed NCOs around you, tell me that you will not beg. If it happens again, I will beg again.

The "Obasanjo phantom plot" happened in 1995, while the Diya plot happened in 1997.
